Isaiah Shaw was born in 1813 in New Jersey. (BIRTH: Calculated from 1860 U.S. Census, Santa Clara Co., CA, age 47 on 4 Jun 1860; 1813 also listed in family records.)^1,2 He married Jane Linn McDuffee on 18 May 1848 in Wheeling, Cook County, Illinois. (MARRIAGE: date from family bible in possession of Dorothy Sawtelle.) She was his second wife.

Western Citizen (Chicago), May 23, 1848. "MARRIED. In Wheeling, Cook Co., May 18th, by Rev. Henry Ryan Smith, Mr. Isaiah Shaw, merchant of this city, and Miss Jane McDuffie, of Wheeling.".³ Isaiah died on 25 December 1888, in Berryessa, Santa Clara County, California, at age ~75. (DEATH: Date from obituary, 26 Dec 1988, San Jose, CA, newspaper and family records in possession of Dorothy Sawtelle.).^4,3 He was buried on 27 December 1888 in Oak Hill Cemetery, San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, BURIAL: Oak Hill Cemetery, San Jose, Santa Clara County, CA; Family plot.

Isaiah Shaw has also been reported to have been born 15 November 1812. He has also been reported to have been born circa 1816 New York.⁵ He lived in 1852 in California.¹ He and Jane Linn Shaw appeared on the census of 1860 in Gilroy, Santa Clara County, California, which lists Isaiah Shaw, age 47, born in New Jersey, farmer, with his wife Jane, age 30, born in Vermont, and their children Mary (F) age 12, born in Illinois, Celia (sic, actually Seeley)(M) age 7, born in Illinois, and Minnie (F) age 2/12, born in California.² He was a farmer, with real property valued at $7,000 and personal property valued at $16,000 in 1860.²

Isaiah Shaw and Jane Linn Shaw appeared on the census of 1870 in Alviso, San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, which lists Isaiah Shaw, 54, born in New York; his wife Jane, 40, born in Vermont; and their children Mary, 19, born in in Illinois, Selah J., 17, born in Illinois, Minnie, 12, born in California, John, 10, born in California, Nettie, 8, born in California, Abraham L., 6, born in California, and Joseph 4, born in California; and three farm laborers.⁵ He was a farmer, owning real property valued at $100,000 and personal property valued at $10,000 in 1870.⁵

Isaiah Shaw and Jane Linn Shaw appeared on the census of 1880 in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, which lists Isaiah Shaw, 60, born in New York; his wife Jane, born in Vermont; their children Mary, 31, born in Illinois, Minnie, 20, born in California, Nettie, 18, born in California, John 17, born in California, Lincoln, 15, born in California, and Joseph, 13, born in California; and a servant and three farm laborers.⁶ He was a farmer in 1880.⁶

ISAIAH SHAW. Among the old pioneers of Santa Clara County may be found the gentleman whose name heads this sketch. He is a native of New Jersey, born in 1813, but was reared in New York. For a number of years he was engaged in the mercantile business in Chicago, in which place he was united in marriage to Miss Jane McDuffy [sic. McDuffee], a native of Vermont. They came to California in 1852, Mr. Shaw coming by water and Mrs. Shaw crossing the plains. Such a trip in the early pioneer days was a long and tedious journey, and often attended with many trials and hardships; but by her skill and management Mrs. Shaw rendered the trip a pleasant one. In 1S53 they settled in Santa Clara Valley, where Mr. Shaw purchased 350 acres of land. He has since sold off all except 183 acres, which he has in apricots, prunes, and peaches, having over 15,000 trees in all. He took the first premium given in the county on exhibit of cheese.

Mr. and Mrs. Shaw have a family of seven children, four boys and three girls. Two of the daughters are married, and the youngest. Miss Nettie, Principal of the Eagle District School, is at home. The four sons, Celia [sic, Seeley], John M., Lincoln, and Joseph, are all interested on the islands, and spend most of their time at Honolulu. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Shaw is politically a Republican.¹

SAN JOSE PASSES AWAY. Isaiah Shaw, an old resident of Santa Clara valley died
at his residence on the Berryessa Road yesterday. He was 75 years of age, and his
death was the result of a general wearing out of the system. He was one of the
jurors in the Superior Court last week and while in the jury box was taken with a
fainting spell. Since then he has been confined to his bed. The deceased was a
native of New Jersey. He came to San Jose in 1853. He leaves a valuable estate to
his widow and several grown children. The latter are W. H. Shaw and Mrs. Eliza
Meaker, residing in Ohio; Seely and Joseph Shaw of Honolulu H.I.; John, Lincoln,
Nettie and Mary Shaw and Mrs. Ed. Moody, of San Jose. The funeral will take
place from the residence near Berryessa to-morrow at 10 o'clock a.m."³

Biography

Maria was born on 17 April 1820 in New York.^1,2 She married John Hadley. She married Daniel McDuffee on 11 August 1877 in Chickasaw County, Iowa.^2,3

Maria McDuffee and Daniel McDuffee were divorced on 28 September 1885 in Fayette County, Iowa. In 1885, in the divorce action brought in Fayette County, Iowa, by his third wife Maria Hadley McDuffee, she accused him of several acts of what we would today probably call spousal abuse (e.g., Daniel "threatened to beat, bruise and wound [Maria] and to scald her with hot coffee"), as well as adultery with Jennie Darling Heath, the woman who would later become his fourth wife. Also, one neighbor testified that Daniel "intimated that [Maria] had had connexion with a negrow [sic] who had lived in the family." The divorce was granted on 25 September 1885. From The Argo (West Union, Iowa), Wednesday , October 7, 1885, page 3: Maria McDuffee vs Danl McDuffee, divorce as prayed, plff to receive 570 alimony Int 8, plff to pay costs.² Maria died on 9 December 1897, in Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, Iowa, at age 77.² She was buried in December 1897 in West Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, Iowa.⁴

Sophronia Jane Darling married Albert Frederick Parker on 2 August 1848 in Ashford, Cattaraugus County, New York. She and Albert Frederick Parker were divorced circa 1863.

Jennie S. Darling married Daniel McDuffee, son of Charles McDuffee, Sr., and Jane Toppen Linn, on 4 December 1885 in Fayette County, Iowa. The Register of Marriages gives his age as 69, his occupation as a farmer, born in Vermont, his father's name as Charles McDuffee and his mother's name as Jane Linn and states that it is his fourth marriage. (We do not know anything about Daniel's "other wife" or when he married her.) The Register of Marriages gives her name as Jennie S. Heath, ne Darling, her age as 55, born in New York, her father's name as John Darling, her mother's surname as Ralph and states that it is her second marriage.^2,3,4

Marie "Elisabeth" Bruderli married Philip von Buren, son of Peter von Buren and Elisabeth Knussi, on 12 February 1866. Following the death of his wife Kathrina on 2 July 1865, Philip von Buren apparently married his wife's older sister, Marie "Elisabeth" Scherrer Bruderli (who was probably a widow) on 12 February 1866 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. He understandably needed a wife to care for his children, the youngest of whom, Theodor von Buren, was only 17 months old when his mother died. In fact, the 1912 death certificate for Theodore Van Buren (as he was by then known) lists Elizabeth (who was actually both his aunt and stepmother) as his mother.

Ebenezer Bullock IV died of dropsy on 5 March 1896 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, at age 72.^1,6,7
Ebenezer Bullock IV was buried in North Johnstown Cemetery, Johnstown Township, Rock County, Wisconsin. Ebenezer Bullock's gravestone at the North Johnstown Cemetery gives his birth date as 4 September 1823 and his death date as 5 March 1896. He is buried in Section 1, Row 1, near his parents and his first two wives.¹

Ebenezer Bullock IV is a direct descendant of Pilgrim passenger(s) John Howland & Elizabeth Tilley on the Mayflower. He appeared on the census of 1830 in the household of Levi Bullock and Deborah Bullock in Attica Township, Genesee County, New York, In the 1830 census, Levi Bullock is shown as living in Attica, Genesee County [just north of Wyoming County where Attica is apparently actually located], New York. The Bullock family consisted of Levi (age 30-39), who, if born on 25 April 1800, would have been about 30, his wife (age 20-29) [Deborah, who if born on 11 December 1807 would have been about 22], one boy under 5 [Joseph?, who if born in about 1826 would have been about 4], one boy 5-9 [Ebenezer?, who if born on 4 September 1823 would have been about 6 or 7], and one girl under 5 [Rosetta?, who if born on 16 March 1829 would have been about 1].⁸

Ebenezer Bullock IV appeared on the census of 1840 in Middlebury, Genesee County, New York.¹⁰ He moved with Levi Bullock and Deborah Bullock from Genesee County, New York, to to Lima Township, Rock County, Wisconsin, at the age of 17 with his seven brothers and sisters circa 11 May 1841.
By a Patent dated 1 February 1846, Ebenezer Bluuck received title to the SW1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section29 in Township 4 North of Range 14 East, in the District of Sunus?, containing 40 acres.

Ebenezer Bullock IV and Thankful M. Bullock appeared on the census of 1850 in Johnstown, Rock County, Wisconsin, which shows "Eben" Bullard [sic; should be Bullock], 26, born in New York; his wife Thankful, 29, born in New York; Hiram, 13, born in New York; Jane, 3, born in Wisconsin; and Emma, 9 months, born in Wisconsin. Hiram is Ebenezer's younger brother who was apparently living with the family after the death of his stepmother, Sally Bullock, in 1850. Emma is their daughter Emma Jane Bullock [Bartlett] who was born 31 January 1850. The daughter Jane, who would have been born in about 1847, apparently died as she is not found in the 1860 Census.

Ebenezer Bullock IV and Elenora Bullock appeared on the census of 1870 in Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin, which shows Ebenezer Bullock, 45, his second wife Elnora, 44, daughter (by his first marriage) Emma, 19, and son Emery, 15. Both Ebenezer and Elnora are listed as being born in New York.

Ebenezer Bullock IV was a farmer, owning real property worth $5,000 and personal property worth $1,200. in 1870.¹⁵

His wife, Elenora, died on 23 October 1873 of inflamation of the stomach in Rock County, Wisconsin, at age 45, leaving him a widower. Her death certificate lists her occupation as farmer and her age at death as 45 years, 3 months and 9 days. [Rock County, Wisconsin, Deaths, Vol. 1, page 25, No. 74].^16,17

Ebenezer Bullock's son Emery L. Bullock (by his first wife Thankful Janes Bullock) died on 3 July 1874.

Ebenezer Bullock IV was a farmer in 1880.¹⁸

In 1888, Ebenezer Bullock's only surviving child, his daughter Emma Jane Bullock Bartlett and her family, left Rock County, Wisconsin, for California, never to return. She later died in 1902 in Salem, McCook County, South Dakota.

Ebenezer Bullock IV and Emma Bullock moved from Rock County, Wisconsin, to to Lake County, South Dakota circa 1893. He and Emma Bullock lived from 1893 to 1896 in Madison, Lake County, South Dakota.⁶

The Wednesday, 11 March 1896, edition of the Sioux City [Iowa] Journal carried the following death notice:

Death of Ebenezer Bullock
Madison, S.D., Leader [Newspaper], 7: Ebenezer Bullock, who was taken away from here [Madison, SD] a month or so ago to Sioux City [Iowa] for treatment, died there [in Sioux City, IA] last night of dropsy. Mr. Bullock had been a resident of Madison [SD] for about three years [about 1893 to 1896], being interested in the creamery here [Madison, SD] with his brother Samuel [Bullock]. The latter [Samuel] departed for Sioux City today and says he will take the remains to Johnston, near Milton, Wisc., for interment. Deceased was 72 years of age and leaves a wife [Emma Wood Vaughn Bullock] here [in Madison, SD] and a daughter [Emma Jane Bullock Bartlett] in [Fairbury] Nebraska.⁶

State of South Dakota. County of Lake—as: In County Court. In the matter of the estate of Ebenezer Bullock, deceased. Notice of day appointed for proving of will. The State of South Dakota sends greeting to: Emma Bullock, widow of deceased, and Emma Bullock, daughter of deceased, and any other heirs next of kin of Ebenezer Bullock, deceased. Pursuant to an order of said court made on the 26th day of March, A. D. 1896, notice is hereby given that Wednesday, the 8th day of April, A. D. 1896, at 4 o'clock p. m. of said day, at the office of the county judge, at Madison, in the county of Lake, S. D., have been appointed as the time and place for proving the will of said Ebenezer Bullock, deceased, and for hearing the application of Samuel Bullock for the issuance to him of letters testamentary, when and where any person interested may appear and contest the same. Witness, the Hon. J. H. Williamson, judge of the county court, and the seal of said court this 26th day of March, A. D. 1896, at his office in the city of Madison, county of Lake, state of South Dakota.
