Biography

Philip von Buren was baptized on 19 April 1819 in Katholiche Kirche Sankt Niklaus, Ruttenen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland.1

Philip von Buren married Kathrina Scherrer, daughter of Joseph Scherrer I and Barbara Burger, on 23 February 1846 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. Kathrina Scherrer was probably from Seewen, because Scherrers from Seewen were the godparents of some of their children. Note: She may have been from Venigen, but I have not yet located that town.

Philip and Kathrina von Buren apparently had at least 13 children, at least 7 of whom died in infancy. Of the surviving 6 children, all 4 boys (Adolf, Emilian, Wilhelm and Theodor) emigrated to America and adopted American names.2

Philip von Buren married Marie "Elisabeth" Bruderli, daughter of Joseph Scherrer I and Barbara Burger, on 12 February 1866. Following the death of his wife Kathrina on 2 July 1865, Philip von Buren apparently married his wife's older sister, Marie "Elisabeth" Scherrer Bruderli (who was probably a widow) on 12 February 1866 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. He understandably needed a wife to care for his children, the youngest of whom, Theodor von Buren, was only 17 months old when his mother died. In fact, the 1912 death certificate for Theodore Van Buren (as he was by then known) lists Elizabeth (who was actually both his aunt and stepmother) as his mother.
.3

Philip von Buren died on 27 August 1891 in Basel, Canton Basel City, Switzerland, at age 72. CAVEAT: The date and place of Philip von Buren's death is from family tradition and has not been confirmed.

Philip von Buren was apparently originally from Ruttenen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. Other von Burens, who were godmothers of some of his children born in Seween, lived in Ruttenen, and the church (Katholishe Kirche Seewen) in Seewen reported the births of his children to the church in Ruttenen (Katholiche Kirche Sankt Niklaus-Ruttenen).

Philip von Buren moved from Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland, to to Ruttenen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland.

Philip von Buren was a stone mason ("steinmetz" in German.)
Philip von Buren and Kathrina von Buren lived in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland.

His wife, Kathrina, died on 2 July 1865 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland, at age 40, leaving him a widower.4

Biography

Kathrina Scherrer was baptized on 21 November 1824 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland.3

Kathrina Scherrer married Philip von Buren, son of Peter von Buren and Elisabeth Knussi, on 23 February 1846 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland.

Of the surviving 6 children, all 4 boys (Adolf, Emilian, Wilhelm and Theodor) emigrated to America and adopted American names.4

Kathrina Scherrer died on 2 July 1865 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland, at age 40.5 She was buried on 4 July 1865 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland.5
Kathrina Scherrer was also known as Catharina Scherrer.6

Biography

William was born on 10 December 1882 in West 39th Street, Manhattan, New York County, New York. His birth date of 10 December 1882 is also calculated from his 29 July 1942 date of death at age 59 years, 7 months and 19 days [Commonwealth of Massachusetts Certificate of Death, filed July 29, 1942]. The 1900 census of Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York, also gives his birth date as December 1882. His death certificate gives his place of birth as New York City, NY.2,3,4,1,5

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., married Bertha Maisenbacher circa 1904. NOTE: The New York State Department of Health did not find a marriage for William A. Van Buren during the years 1902 to 1904 [Letter, dated 16 November 1998], so perhaps he was married in New York City.
NOTE: Check New York City marriage records for 1902-1904 for William A. Van Buren's marriage.

2013 Message from JackHazel2: I'm curious about his possible marriage to Bertha. He was my grandmother's brother and the story I heard was that he had an illegitimate daughter named Ivy with a maid. What is your source of info on this?6

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., married Eva L. Burrows, daughter of Russell E. Burrows and Abby Chapel Sistare, before 1920.

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., married Alice Louise Nealy, daughter of John J. Nealy and Mary O'Brien, circa 1930.7

William died on 29 July 1942, in Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts, at age 59. [22 May 1999 letter from Frances Alport and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Certificate of Death, filed July 29, 1942] His death certificate gives the cause of death as adeno carcinoma of the stomach and inaition and malnutrition.8,9 His body was interred on 31 July 1942 in Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, Westchester County, New York+.

[Commonwealth of Massachussets Certificate of Death, filed July 29, 1942] He was apparently latter cremated and and interred on 24 August 1943 in Niche 4, Column C, Alcove C, Columbarium Room 1, Unit 4, Ferncliff Mausoleum, Ferncliff Cemetery, P.O. Box 217, Hartsdale, New York 10540. His urn inscription also gives his year of death as 1942. [16 December 1999 letter from Ferncliff Cemetery Association] The ashes of William Van Buren, Sr., his wife Anna Margaret Van Buren, their son William Van Buren, Jr., their son Ralph Van Buren and his wife Sarah Weaver Van Buren are all interred there. [16 December 1999 letter from Ferncliff Cemetery Association] Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum is located on Secor Road in the hamlet of Hartsdale, town of Greenburgh, Westchester County, New York, about 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan.8
William Julius Van Buren, Jr., was listed as a resident in Wilhelm Von Buren II and Anna "Margaret" Van Buren's household in the census report in 1900 in 137 North Railroad Avenue (now 137 MacQuesten Parkway North), Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York.2 William Julius Van Buren, Jr., appeared on the census of 1905 in the household of Wilhelm Von Buren II and Anna "Margaret" Van Buren in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York,

Household Members:
Name Age
William Van Buren 47
Margerita Van Buren 45
William Van Buren 22
Adelaide Van Buren 16
Ralph Van Buren 14.10 According to his brother Ralph Van Buren's 1909 letter to their cousin Ervin Paul Van Buren, in 1909, William Van Buren, Jr. was in the automobile business and had been married for about 6 years (since about 1903). William apparently did not have any children at that time. That marriage apparently ended, and William Van Buren later married, first, Eva Burrows and, second, Alice Louise Nealy.

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., and Bertha Van Buren appeared on the census of 1910 in Manhattan, New York County, New York, which lists William Van Buren, 29, born in New York, his father born in Switzerland, mother born in Hungary [sic, actually, New York]; and his wife Bertha, 29, born in New York, her father born in Germany and mother born in New York. They had been married for 6 years (since about 1904), and Bertha had not given birth to any children.11 He was an automobile chauffeur in 1910.6

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., married Augusta Elise Favez, daughter of Emile Favez and Melina Yearnneret, circa 1914. According to the 1930 census, she was first married at age 36. If she was born in 1878, that would be in about 1914. However, the List of United States Citizens Arriving at the Port of New York on 26 October 1914 [found in Ellis Island Online] states that she was a US Citizen - Naturalized "by her marriage" ; according to the 1920 census she was naturalized in 1912, so perhaps she was married in 1912.

2013 Message from JackHazel2: I'm curious about his possible marriage to Bertha. He was my grandmother's brother and the story I heard was that he had an illegitimate daughter named Ivy with a maid. What is your source of info on this?12

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., registered for the draft for World War I on 12 September 1918, while living at 54 Hobson Street, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, reporting he was employed by Packard Motor Car Company, 832 State Street, Springfield, Massahcusetts, as a truck salesman. His wife's name is listed only as "Mrs. William Van Buren," at the same home address.13

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., and Eva L. Van Buren appeared on the census of 1920 in 173 Albemarle Ave, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lists William Van Buren [Jr.], 37, born in New York (in about 1883), his father born in Switzerland and mother born in New York; his wife Eva B. Van Buren, 43, born in Massachusetts (in about 1877), both parents also born in Massachusetts [or Connecticut?]; and a stepson (Eva's son) Reuel Van Buren, 7, born in New York (in about 1913), father born in New York, mother born in Massachusetts.

Household Members:
Williamm Van Buren, 37
Eva B Van Buren, 43
Reuel Van Buren, 7.14 He lived in 1920 in 185 Albemarle Ave, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.15

Bertha evidently was a very unhappy person and was no longer with William Van Buren by the 1920s. The Yonkers NY Statesman, Sept. 19 1921, describes her possible suicide attempt by gas poisoning at her NYC residence, resulting in a trip to Bellevue psychiatric hospital. She was diagnosed with alcoholism.

The following year the Mount Vernon NY Daily Argus, Nov. 20, 1922, gives an account of Bertha's being jailed for disorderly conduct and subsequently attempting to hang herself in Mount Vernon's jail. In both cases, she was described as living in NYC but being a former resident of Mount Vernon and Yonkers, approximately age 43. Her sister, Miss Maisenbacher, of Yonkers accompanied her upon her release from the 1921 incident. Bertha was likely the Bertha Meisenbacher born April 1880 in New York and recorded in the 1900 census at Yonkers.
He lived in 1923 in 36 Colonial Avenue, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.16 He lived in 1924 in 36 Colonial Avenue, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. His wife is listed as Evelyn [Note: Is she the Eva listed in the 1915 NY State Census and as his wife in the 1920 census?], and he is a salesman, working at 721 State Street, Springfield, MA.1718 According to family tradition, William Van Buren, Jr. once sold an automobile to his cousin-in-law Gordon Salmonsen (who at the time probably lived in the Springfield, Massachusetts, area). They discovered their relationship when Salmonsen remarked that he had an aunt named Van Buren (Anna Paulson Van Buren) who lived in Wahpeton, North Dakota, and Van Buren said "So do I!" William Van Buren, Jr.'s 1942 death certificate states that he was a salesman for the Packard Motor Car Company.

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., and Alice Louise Van Buren appeared on the census of 1930 in Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lists William J. [sic] Van Buren, 47, born in New York, father born in Swtizerland, mother born in New York; and his wife, Alice L., 31, born in Massachusetts, both parents born in Northern Ireland. Alice's was first married at age 31 (apparently in about 1929 or 1930), and no age is given for William's first marriage, possibly suggesting that he had been married before. They owned a house valued at $16,000 at 50 Warren Terrace.7
William Julius Van Buren, Jr., was an automobile salesman in 1930. He and Alice Louise Van Buren lived in 1934 in 50 Warren Terrace, Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts.19

Diane Khoury has photos that show that William Van Buren, Jr. had a son, who was named William ("Billy") Van Buren III. [See the following 22 May 1999 letter from Frances Alport and the 15 June 1999 letter from William Van Buren III.] There is a Christmas card with a baby's photo from "The William Van Burens." Another Christmas card from the same family contains a photo of a young boy (on which Hedwig "Hattie" Van Buren Kuchenbecker had written "Willie's boy, 4 years old") with a partial message referring to a 4th birthday on 20 December 1936 (and William Van Buren III was born on 20 December 1932), and giving an address of 50 Warren Terrace, Longmeadow, Massachusetts. William Van Buren, Jr. (who was born on 10 December 1882) would have been 50 years old when his son was born on 20 December 1932, although his age on his son's birth certificate is given as only 42. On the 1940 death certificate for his wife, Alice Louise Nealy Van Buren, William Van Buren, Jr.'s age is given as 49 years, although he was apparently actually 57 years old at that time.
Longmeadow is in Hampden County, just south of Springfield, Massachusetts. According to his 1942 death certificate, William Van Buren had lived there 14 years at the time of his death, so he would have moved to Longmeadow in about 1928.

I wrote to the current occupant of 50 Warren Terrace, Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and received the following gracious reply, dated 22 May 1999, from Mrs. Frances Alport:

I was amazed to receive your letter. Yes, I can give you some limited knowledge about the William Van Burens who originally owned my house. This house, built in 1929, was purchased by me on December 7, 1942 (about a month before my marriage to opthamologist Dr. Benjamin Alport) from the William Van Buren Estate [who had died on 29 July 1942]. I loved it the moment I saw it. However, I felt sad seeing 9-year old orphan "Billy" [William Van Buren III] sitting on its extended brick wall, and I told Dr. Ben that I didn't feel right taking the house away from this boy. I believe that his mother died first [in 1940], and then the father [William Van Buren, Jr.] died in the back room of the house [in 1942] after a lingering illness. There was a lady taking care of the boy during this period.
Billy's playmate was Gerald Tober, son of Dr. J. Tober, 95 Warren Terrace. His sister, Helen James, still lives at 95. I will ask her for Gerald's address and send it to you.
Billy's conservator was an attorney-uncle [Ralph Van Buren; but he was apparently an advertising executive] who sent the boy to private schools most of his life. About 20 or more years ago [in about 1979?] Bill visited me. He was accompanied by his wife and 2 or 3 children. He was in his forties [in 1979, he would have been about 47], I would say, and now is about 66 [that would be correct]. What a lovely young man! I understand that his parents were like that, also. I let him happily go about the house and invited him and his family to stay for dinner. He has called me once since then (I told him to visit at any time). Since then, he was divorced [sic; his first wife Gloria died in 1983] and re-married. The last address I had for William Van Buren was 440D Heritage Hills, Somers, New York 10589. I believe that he worked for State Farm Insurance.
The same house is on both of your photos. The brick steps and stoop are no more. They are now cement, but the walk is still flagstone. I lost my husband over 9 years ago, but still can't leave this pretty Tudor. It is unusual that you found me after such a long time, If you find Billy, give him my love and best wishes. If I have other information, I will send it to you. I was so touched to receive your letter.
Good luck to you and your family!

Mrs. Alport also added a note that the late William Van Buren was a Packard car salesman.
He lived in 1937 in 50 Warren Terrace, Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts. His wife is listed as Alice L. and his occupation as salesman.20

William Julius Van Buren, Jr., appeared on the census of 1940 in 50 Warren Terrace, Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lists William Van Buren, 51; his wife Alice M. Van Buren, 42; and their son William, Jr., 7.

Household Members:
William Van Buren, 51
Alice M Van Buren, 42
William Van Buren, 7.21

His wife, Alice, died on 2 July 1940 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, at age ~51, leaving him a widower. She apparently struck her leg in a accident at her home in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, rupturing a varicose vein which led to her death from shock due to hemorrhage the same day (2 July 1940) at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts. [Certificate of Death, Registered No. 1110, filed 8 July 1940] See also a 15 June 1999 letter from William Van Buren III.22,23

The following appeared on page 2 of the Saturday, 24 May 1941, edition of the Springfield [MA] Republican:

INHERITS MOTHER'S ESTATE
William Van Buren, Jr. of [Springfield, MA] will inherit the bill [bulk] of the estate left by his mother, Mrs. Anna Margaret Van Buren of Mount Vernon, N.Y., according to findings of the New York state transfer tax department. He was bequeathed $7,000 and one-third of the residual estate. Mrs. Van Buren died on February 28 [1941]. He registered for the draft for World War II in 1942, while living at 50 Warren Terrace, Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts, reporting he was employed by the Packard Motor Car Company, 721 State Street, Springfield, MA. His wife Alice Nealy Van Buren had died in 1940, so his brother Ralph Van Buren, living at 137 Macquesten Parkway, Mount Vernon, NY, is listed as his nearest relative.24 Event Type Obituary

Biography

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II was born on 27 August 1863 in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. His death certificate gives his date of birth as 27 August 1863.1,2

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II married Anna Sophie Yelm on 10 May 1890 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.3,4

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II married Emma L. Semke, daughter of Henry Semke and Henrietta Hastings, on 25 December 1906 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, Their Christmas Day wedding took place at the German Methodist Episcopal Church, 575 East Pico Street, Los Angeles on 25 December (Christmas Day) 1906. Theodore Van Buren, age 43, had been a widower for ten years following the death of his first wife Anna Sophia Van Buren. His bride, Emma L. Semke, age 30, was born in Westfield, Massachusetts, of German parents, Henry Semke and Henrietta Hastings. Her address was given as 933 Burlington Avenue, Los Angeles. Theodore is shown as born in Switzerland of Swiss parents, Philipp [sic] and Elisabeth Van Buren. However, Elisabeth [Scherrer] was apparently actually his stepmother and aunt, the sister of his mother Kathrina Scherrer who had died when he was only about 17 months old. His occupation was decorator and he was still living at 315 South Bunker Hill Avenue. [Los Angeles County Marriage License and State of California Certificate of Marriage]

From the Los Angeles Daily News, Tuesday, 25 December 1906, page 12:
Vital Record - Marriages
VAN BUREN-SEMKE. Theodore Van Buren, aged 43, a native of Switzerland, and Eina [sic] L. Semke, aged 30, a native of Massachusetts; both residents of Los Angeles.

Essentially the same information appeared in the the Los Angeles Post-Record,Tuesday, 25 December 1906, page 7.5,6

Theodore died on 11 June 1912, in Noble Hospital, Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, at age 48. Theodore and Emma Van Buren may traveled, to Westfield, Massachusetts (his wife Emma's birthplace), en route to their planned 2-year trip to Eurrope only a month before his death there at Noble Hospital on 11 June 1912 at age 48 years, 9 months and 15 days. His "former or usual residence" is listed as Los Angeles, California. His death certificate lists his occupation as "artist". The primary cause of death was "starvation" and the secondary cause pyloric stenosis of stomach of four years duration. His father's name is given as Philip Van Buren and mother as Elizabeth Sherer (although she was apparently actually his stepmother and aunt, the sister of his mother Kathrina Scherrer who had died when he was only about 17 months old), both born in Switzerland. His widow, Emma, signed the death certificate as "Mrs. Theodore Van Buren". [Commonwealth of Massachusetts Standard Certificate of Death]

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, [Commonwealth of Massachusetts Standard Certificate of Death] The Pine Hill Cemetery is located at 140 West Silver Street, Westfield, Massachusetts 01085-3637; telephone: 413-568-7026.

NOTE: Contact Pine Hill Cemetery.
His baptism name was Teodor Von Buren II. Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II was christened on 30 August 1863 in Katholische Kirche, Seewen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland.2 He emigrated on 13 December 1884 from Switzerland to the United States. He sailed from La Havre, France on the ship Canada and arrived in New York.8,9 He lived in 1886 in Minnesota Home, 205 5th Avenue South, Duluth, Saint Louis County, Minnesota.10 He and Adam Emile Van Buren were a painter employed by Henry Haskins, located at the southeast corner of First Street and First Avenue in Duluth, Minnesota between 1886 and 1887 in Duluth, Saint Louis County, Minnesota.11,12 Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II lived in 1887 in Central House, 21 Lake Avenue North, Duluth, Saint Louis County, Minnesota.13 He was a painter employed by James B. Henderson in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1888.14 He lived in 1888 in 317 6th Avenue South, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.1415 He lived between 1890 and 1891 in 254 6th Avenue South, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.16 He was a wallpaper hanger between 1890 and 1891.16 According to family tradition, Theodore Van Buren apparently lived for a time in Wahpeton, North Dakota, with his brother Adam Emile Van Buren, but their paint store evidently did not produce enough income to support them both, so Theodore moved to either Minneapolis or California.

Theodore Van Buren's first wife, Anna Sophie Yelm Van Buren, who he married in Minneapolis in 1890, was born in Sweden in about 1862. They had a stillborn son in Minneapolis in 1892. She apparently moved with him to Los Angeles. He does not appear in the Los Angeles City Directories for1893 or 1894. He first appears in the 1895 Los Angeles City Directory (on page 1386), as a paper hanger and painter, living at 214 Avery. He does not appear in the 1896 Directory. Anna Sophie Van Buren died in childbirth at age 34 at their home at 315 South Bunker Hill Avenue, Los Angeles, California, on 18 December 1896. The cause of death was placenta-??? and post-partum hemorrhaging. The baby girl also died on 18 December 1896 of premature birth and maternal hemorrhage. The mother and daughter were were both buried on 20 December 1896 in Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angles. [Los Angeles County Certificates of Death]

We have a 13 January 1897 letter [written in German] from Theodore Van Buren to his brother Adam Emile Van Buren and sister-in-law Anna Paulson Van Buren in Wahpeton, North Dakota, following the death of Anna Sophie Van Buren on 18 December 1896:

Dear Brother and Sister-in-Law:
I received your last two letters, and the one to my deceased wife was too late. Regrettably, I had to open it myself. I was able to understand it fairly well. I am very grateful to you, my sister-in-law.
Dear brother and sister-in-law, the last letters of the 27th [of December 1896?] or my desired ??? from you, made me really happy, but also sad. It is good advice, but unfortunately I can't do it that way. You know that I am [now] in an area of the country where I could not have endured gong into the cold winter -- not at this time.
Not that alone. You haven't considered that if I were to do that [go back to Wahpeton, North Dakota], I would lose all that I have. It is not so easy to go to Wahpeton, and then again to return to Los Angeles. You must know that this trip would cost at least $100, besides two months in Wahpeton without any earnings. It is true that I would feel a little better with you and my sister-in-law, and I would like so much to do that. I want to tell you where I stand financially. Right now, I have only $200 in the bank. I also have my beautiful home on which I must lose a lot if I went to sell, as you probably also know. I am now still $50 in debt [on a mortgage]. I owe the doctor $42 which I need not pay right away. Because he could not save my wife, I am unhappy enough without so much to pay for. I suppose I could even pay [only] half to the doctor. Many people here tell me that. What do you think, dear brother and sister-in-law?
I do work, but not every day. You know how it is. But still I earn about $10 or $12 per week. The work is all "piece-work". The work is always the same throughout the whole year, because there is no winter here. You must know that the winter here is more beautiful than the summer in Dakota. The winter here is the most beautiful time. The summers here are also more beautiful than in Dakota, because they are not so hot.
I read from you last letter that you also have had a bad year. No, $350 is also not much to live on, but at least you have your wife and child [Phillip Van Buren, born 4 July 1896], and you yourself are healthy -- all of which make me happy.
I know what it is to live happily, but for me now there is "a great line across the account", and my life is gone. I just have not been the same since my so beloved wife has died. No day has yet gone by that I have not cried, especially when I come home in the evening and everything is empty. I can scarcely believe it, but yet that is the way it is, my loved ones. We all know that we must die, but still we strive to live as long as possible, especially when one lives happily and faithfully as my wife and I did. When one is old, I think one is not so concerned with this, however. I wish for my own death now, day and night. Oh, if only I could have gone with my wife into eternal rest.
I still do knot know what I should do. I feel so depressed and abandoned here in California, but yet the country agrees with me so well. My wife's relatives in Minneapolis want that I should come to them, but now they are also in the country in Maple Ridge, Beltrami county. Earlier they were in Minneapolis. If they were still there [apparently in Minneapolis], I would go if it were warmer for a little while. There I could find work anywhere in Minneapolis, and then I could also come to visit you.
My beloved wife made so many clothes for the little expected child, but I have already given many away. I knew many would be too small for my "Godchild??" [his nephew, Phillip Van Buren], but I still have some, and I believe that they would be large enough. I also have a few infant's outfits -- all of which are newly bought. I want to send them to you if you want to have them. I could give you much if you were here.
Write as soon as possible.
In closing, I add still another picture of where my wife now sleeps in eternity, as well as the child. She was a girl. You can see that it is saddening for me. I had a picture ordered for her parents in Sweden, so that they could see that she was properly buried and had a beautiful coffin -- better than had she died at home in Sweden.
The cemetery [Rosedale Cemetery] where my wife lies is perfectly beautiful. There are pepper trees, orange trees, palm trees, banana trees, cyprus trees, and the Eucalyptus??? trees from Australia, The whole grave was covered with boughs of the Pepper tree, something you cannot see in Dakota.
Enough for this time. More next time. Greetings to you and your family.
Your brother, Theodore

[Translated from German by Mark Hegnauer on 19 July 1971]

We have an undated [but apparently written after 1897, because it refers to his brother's "children", but before his brother's death in 1904] fragment of a letter from Theodore Van Buren, who was then living at 968 Washington Street, Oakland, California, to his brother Adam Emile Van Buren in Wahpeton, North Dakota, apparently after Theodore had returned from a trip to Hawaii and Australia:

* * * In Honolulu ist ja alles English and they use United State money as well. Australia ist auch alles English, and I know for certain that I can secure work. There are large Cities also and new growing country like California. It cost me 25 Dollars to go to Honolulu and 100 Dollars to Australia. I don't know of anything further news to write. Hope this few lines will find you all in good health, just as it has me at present. So I will close with my best wishes to you and Wife, also Children. I surely would like to see them. I hope I will some time. Have you heard of Brother Willie lately? I did get no answer yet -- it is over a year now. That is just the very reason I don't want to go to New York. He has not treated me right in no respect whatever. If he ??? don't want to come here, he??? never be very Wife, she can easily enough get someone to look after her house and come here. I know I could not stay two weeks in Brooklyn, and so long I don't see here I won't have no likeness to her. Well, that's all. Write soon as possible and tell me your opinion [sic; not clear!]. Good by.
My best greetings to you yours,
Brother Theodore
968 Washington Street, Oakland,California

In the 1898 Los Angeles Directory, he is listed (on page 1017) as a paper hanger employed by the Los Angeles Wall Paper Company, living at 315 1/2 South Bunker Hill Avenue. He does not appear in the 1899, 1900/01 or 1901 Directories. In the 1903 Los Angeles Directory, he listed (on page 1267) as a decorator, employed by G. A. Thiele, apparently rooming at 315 South Bunker Hill Avenue.

NOTE: The paper copies of the 1904-1909 Los Angeles Directories were in bad shape; need to check the microfilm copies.

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II lived in 1895 in 214 Avery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.17

His wife, Anna, died on 18 December 1896 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age ~34, leaving him a widower. The cause of death was post-partum hemorraging. The infant daughter also died.18

His wife, Infant, died on 18 December 1896 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age 0, leaving him a widower. The baby was stillborn in the eighth month of her mother's pregnancy. Her mother, Anna Sophie Van Buren, also died from child birth complications.19,18

He was a wall paper hanger, employed by the Los Angeles Paper Co. in 1897.20,21 He lived in 1897 in 315 1/2 South Bunker Hill Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.20,21

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II lived in 1898 in 315 1/2 South Bunker Hill Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.22

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II was naturalized on 21 January 1898 in Superior Court, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.1,23

Note: I have not yet found Theodore Van Buren in the 1900. census.

In the 1900 census, there is a Henry Van Buren living as a lodger with the Robert R. Rhodes family at 520 8th Street, Oakland, Alameda County, California. This person was born in Switzerland in March [not August] 1863, was a widower, occupation "paper hander" (which could be paper hanger). But he apparently emigrated from Switzerland to the USA in 1876,and Theodore Van Buren did not emigrate until 1884. I have not found this Henry Van Buren in either the 1880 or 1920 censuses, so it is perhaps possible that he could be Theodore Van Buren, who we know lived in Oakland sometime during the period 1900 to 1903.
Also, in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, City Directory, 1888, there was a Henry T. Van Buren, painter, boarding at the same address as Theodore Van Buren. Perhaps he is the same person as the Henry Van Buren in Oakland, CA, in 1900. Might he be a Swiss cousin of our Van Burens?

He lived in 1900 in 401 12th Street, Oakland, Alameda County, California.24 He was a paper hanger, working for L.N. Cobbledick in 1900.25 He was a painter in 1901.26 He lived in 1901 in 371 Washington, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.26 He was a decorator in 1902.27 He lived in 1902 in 623 10th, Oakland, Alameda County, California.27 He was a wall paper hanger in 1902.28 He lived in 1902 in 319 West 5th Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.29,28 He lived in 1903 in 315 South Bunker Hill Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.30

In 1904, Theodore Van Buren, a widower, lived at 315 South Bunker Hill Avenue in Los Angeles, California (where his wife Anna Sophie had died in childbirth in 1896), and worked in a store at 309 South Main Street. We have the following letter, dated 28 July 1904, that he wrote to his sister-in-law Anna Paulson Van Buren in Wahpeton, North Dakota, following the death of his brother Adam Emile Van Buren on 28 May 1904:

My dear Sister:
Your sad news received and it gave me quite a shock. You can well imagine my intense sorrow on hearing of my dear Brother's death. I deeply regret we are so far apart that I am prevented rendering you more than friendly sympathy. It is about two years that I last heard of my Brother, and many times I attempted to write, but as the days go by letter writing is put off from time to time thinking better opportunity will come. About a year ago I sent a postcard while I was at the Catalina Island, and last Christmas I sent a card to you and Brother showing that I am in Los Angeles yet. Why didn't you write while Brother was sick? Please, dear sister, tell me all about how it happened. What are you doing now? Hope you are all well. It seems hardly possible to me that Brother is dead. Now, sister, I will close hoping to hear from you in the near future. Will write more next time. So now goodby, sister and children. I am very sorry I cannot be with you at present.
With all my best wishes, I remain your Brother-in-law, Theo. Van Buren, 315 S. Bunker Hill Ave.
309 S. Main St. is the store [where] I am working.
Ta. Ta dear sister.
He lived in 1904 in 315 South Bunker Hill Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.31 He was a decorator employed by G.A. Thiele in 1904.31 He lived between 1908 and 1910 in 1110 Hobart Blvd, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.32
Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II and Emma L. Van Buren appeared on the census of 1910 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, which lists Theodore [misspelled "Tailor"] Van Buren, 46, and his second wife Emma, 33. They had been married 3 years; it was the second marriage for Theodore and the first marriage for Emma. Emma had no children, either living or dead. Theodore is shown as born in "Swiss/Germany" and both his parents as born in "Swiss/Germany" [not totally legible] Emma is shown as born in Massachusetts [mis-indexed as Minnesota] and both her parents in Germany [not very legible].33 He was a [wall]paper hanger in a decorator store in 1910.34 He was an artist in 1911.35

Theodore (Theo) Van Buren II and Emma L. Van Buren lived in 1911 in 1153 South Hope Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.36

On 26 January 1912, in Los Angeles, Theodore Van Buren applied for a passport for himself and his wife Emma. The application stated that they planned to be abroad for two years. He was 5' 6" and listed his occupation as an artist.8 He lived on 26 January 1912 in 1327 Valencia Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.1
