He became a man of note and influence, and occupied many prominent positions. He was an active, industrious man; a useful citizen and highly esteemed. He was a selectman eleven years, and a representative in the Legislature nine years, being the longest term that any man has served in that office. He was a member if the Constitutional Convention of 1814, and a councillor in 1820. In 1811, he was one of the judges of the county court, and again in 1813. He removed to Pawlet in 1822, where he died in 1841, aged 73. His wife died in in 1821, aged 50. Their children were John, Ezra,
Hannah, Tempa, Sophia, Clara, Julia and Alta.

They had 8 children: Mordecai, Jr. (Mary Rockwell), Eleazer (Rachel Hoyt), Isaac (Hannah Bennett, Sally Hubbel), Abigail (Oliver Crocker), William (Mary Francis), Grace, Samuel, and Anna (John Washington Hoyt).
3,4,2 Mordecai Bedient, Sr., died on 10 November 1777 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 40. He was killed at the Battle of Mud Island (Fort Mifflin) in the Revolutionary War.

Mordecai's Regiment received orders from General George Washington to defend Fort Mifflin on Mud Island in the Delaware River just outside of Philadelphia. Mordecai's Regiment was to prevent the British from establishing a supply line to Philadelphia. The British forces laid siege to Fort Mifflin in early October 1777. During the 5-week siege, 406 to 450 American soldiers held off more than 2,000 British troops and 250 ships until 10 November 1777, when the British intensified their assault by launching an incessant barrage of cannonballs into the Fort. Mordecai was killed during this assault of 10 Nov 1777, a total of 250 being killed or wounded. Supposedly, Mordecai's body was ferried along with the rest of the dead and wounded to the mainland before the final evacuation, which occurred in the night of Nov 15 and 16, 1777. It is unknown where the body of Mordecai Bedient was laid to rest.

On 26 Apr 1761 he married Abigail Raymond in Fairfield and they had 8 children; Mordecai (Mary Rockwell), Eleazer (Rachel Hoyt), Isaac (Hannah Bennett, Sally Hubbel), Abigail (Oliver Crocker), William (Mary Francis), Grace, Samuel, and Anna (John Washington Hoyt).
In January of 1777, during the Revolutionary War, he served as a Private in Captain Comstock's Co, the 8th Regiment CT Line. Mordecai's Regiment received orders from General George Washington to defend Fort Mifflin on Mud Island in the Delaware River just outside of Philadelphia. Mordecai's Regiment was to prevent the British from establishing a supply line to Philadelphia. The British forces laid siege to Fort Mifflin in early October 1777. During the 5-week siege, 406 to 450 American soldiers held off more than 2,000 British troops and 250 ships until 10 November 1777, when the British intensified their assault by launching an incessant barrage of cannonballs into the Fort.
