Biography

Rachel was born on December 1844 in Illinois. According to the 1880 Iowa census, Rachel [Whitbeck] Dykins was born in Illinois.1,2 She married William Henry Harrison Dykins on before 1863. (In 1863, William and Rachel Dykins executed deeds in Fayette County, Iowa, so they were apparently married before then.). Rachel died on 16 December 1926, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, at age ~82. The cause of her death was bronchial pneumonia. At the time of her death, she was 82 years old and widowed. Rachel Whitbeck Dykins was buried in Crypt 2, Letter J, Section 5, Lower Mausoleum, at Fairlawn Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, by Ed L. Hahn Funeral Home. [Fairlawn Cemetery Statistic No. A-1274]

The Saturday, 18 December 1926, edition of The Daily Oklahoman carried the following obituary (on page 4):

      Mrs. Rachael Dykins

Mrs. Rachael Dykins, 83 years old, died Friday morning [17 December 1926] at her home, 815 North Walnut Avenue, [Oklahoma City, OK]. She is survived by two sons, Vernon and Will Dykins, both of Oklahoma City, and a daughter, Miss Emma Dykins of Oklahoma City; also one sister, Mrs. Ann Irving of Boone, Iowa. Arrangements will be announced later by the Hahn funeral home. She was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma.
Rachel Whitbeck appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of Walter Robert Calvin Whitbeck and Sarah (Sally) Whitbeck in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa.

Rachel Dykins and William Henry Harrison Dykins appeared on the census of 1870 in Douglas, Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists William Dykins, 29, his wife Rachel [Whitbeck], 24, and their daughter Emma, 4. William is listed as a farm laborer, owning real property worth $5,000 and personal property worth $600. Betsy Whitbeck, who was Rachel's younger sister, age 19, lived with the family. Betsy, who was attending school, owned real property worth $6,000, perhaps an inheritance from deceased parents.3

Rachel Dykins and William Henry Harrison Dykins appeared on the census of 1880 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists W.H. Dykins, 39, his wife Rachel, 34, their daughter Emma, 15, and sons Vernon, 9 and Willie R., 9 months. W.H. Dykins is listed as "works on farm", Rachel as "keeping house" and Emma as "at school". Both W.H. and Rachel are listed as being born in Illinois, and all four of their parents are listed as being born in New York. Their children are all listed as being born in Iowa.4

Rachel Whitbeck Dykins

The Friday, 5 January 1883, issue of the Madison [Lake County, Dakota Territory] Sentinel contained the following item:

The burning of the Dykins' grain stacks, a few miles northwest of [Madison] during the month of October last [1882] and the sad death a day or two after of a cousin and neighbor, Mrs. A. B. Bronson, consequent upon the fright received at the time, are still fresh in the minds of Sentinel readers no doubt. On Wednesday last [3 January 1883], upon complaint lodged with justice Kennedy by Albert W. Dykins, deputy sheriff Cornelysen brought Mrs. W.H. Dykins [Rachel Whitbeck Dykins] before his honor upon charge of incendiarism. Upon the preliminary examination following, the defendant pleaded not guilty and gave bonds in the sum of $100 for her appearance on Monday, January 15th [1883], at one o'clock p.m. Able counsel has been retained, Soper & Coppernoll for the territory [of Dakota] and Murry & Brennan for the defense, and the case will doubtless develop no little interest.

But apparently there is no court file on this matter.

Rachel was described by June Dykins Ellis as being "short and rotund". She lived to an old age and died after falling off a stool and breaking her hip.

Rachel Dykins and William Henry Harrison Dykins appeared on the census of 1900 in 621 Union Avenue, Madison, Lake County, South Dakota, which lists William H. Dykins, 59 born November 1840 [sic, probably 1841] in Illinois; his wife Rachel, 55, born December 1844 in Illinois; and their children (all born in Iowa) Emma M., 34, born September 1865, Vernon D., 29, born July 1870, and Willie R., 20, born August 1879. They apparently lived very close to the James V. Regan family.2

The Thursday, 23 May 1918, edition of the Vermillion [Clay County, South Dakota] Plaintalk carried the following obituary for Annie Chappell Lee:

Reaches End of Life's Span
Mrs. Andrew E. Lee Passes Away at
Her Court Street Home on Friday
Afternoon Last

After an illness extending over a period of years, Mrs. Andrew E. Lee entered into her final rest on Friday afternoon of last week [17 May 1918] at her home on [224] Court Street. While her friends and acquaintances were in a measure prepared for the news of her passing, yet none of them were aware that the end was so near. They were cognizant of the fact that her malady was one with which medical science could not cope successfully, and that the final summons was but a matter of time. For more than six years, Mrs. Lee had been afflicted with this malady which was slowly but surely sapping her vitality, and while she was a constant sufferer, she bore her sufferings with a wonderful patience, cheerfulness and fortitude, unwilling to let her friends and those next to her know her true condition. The best of medical skill had been consulted in her behalf and trained attendants were constantly at her side caring for her wants during the past few months. At an early hour on Friday morning, the attending nurse administered the usual medicine portion, and soon afterwards Mrs. Lee fell to sleep. From that sleep she never awakened, and the final summons came about 1:30 o'clock on Friday afternoon.
The passing of Mrs. Lee removes from our midst one who for nearly fifty years has been a part of the social life of Vermillion. She came to Vermillion as a young lady of 20 years of age [in about 1871], and since that time this city has always been her home. Up to the time that her health began to fail, she always took a prominent part in the social life of the city. Her home had been the scene of countless happy gatherings, and her guests were always pleased to be numbered among those who were permitted to enjoy her hospitality and cordial goodwill. For many years she had been a prominent member of the Baptist congregation and always took a deep interest in the several departments of church work, and it is with sincere sorrow that her co-workers in the church, together with her host of friends and acquaintances, bow their heads to the will of an all-wise Providence who has called her to her final home.
Martha Anna [sic] Chappell was born in the state of Rhode Island on April 30, 1851. When she was three years of age, her parents moved to Racine County, Wisconsin, and here she grew to young womanhood. Although she did not come west when her parents removed to Vermillion, she joined them here in 1871. In December 1872, she was united in marriage to Andrew E. Lee, and ever since then this city has been their home. To this union were born two daughters, one [Jennie Bell Lee] dying in infancy. The other, Mrs. Jessamine Lee Fox, together with the husband and father [Andrew E. Lee], survive the passing of the beloved wife and mother.
Funeral services were held at her late home on Court Street on Sunday afternoon [19 May 1918], and were conducted by Rev. J.H. Gagnier, pastor of the First Baptist Church. There was a large gathering of friends and neighbors at the home to pay a last tribute of respect to one who had lived among them for so long and who they knew so favorably. The burial was in Bluff View Cemetery.
Besides the surviving husband [Andrew E. Lee] and daughter [Jessamine Lee Fox], Mrs. Lee leaves to mourn her lose one sister, Mrs. Andrew Pickett of this city [Vermillion, SD]. And to those relatives who are mourning the loss of one who was so near and dear to them, the hearts of the community go out in sympathy in their hour of bereavement.

Biography

Daniel was born on 26 May 1817 in Cabot, Washington County, Vermont.1,2,3,4

Daniel McDuffee married Laura Ann Renslow, daughter of Kelley Caleb Ranslow and Charlotte Wilder, circa 1847. Laura had apparently earlier been married to a Mr. Taylor who had evidently died and by whom she may have had several (four?) children. Note:The Vermont General Services Center apparently does not have any record of their marriage in Vermont, although I did not request a search under the name Laura Taylor for the bride. If Daniel had already obtained land in Wisconsin, perhaps they were married in Wisconsin. An unsourced report suggested that they were married in 1841. If so, that would probably have been in Wisconsin.

Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee were divorced before 1877. Except for this divorce and the 1870 census, we know nothing further about Laura Ann Renslow.

Daniel McDuffee married Maria Hadley, daughter of Alanson Potter and Selphina Evarts, on 11 August 1877 in Chickasaw County, Iowa. The Chickasaw County, Iowa, Marriage Record, dated 11 August 1877, gives his name as Daniel McDuffee, her name as Maria Headley [sic] and was apparently issued "on the testimony of [his daughter] Addie McDuffee". Daniel's first name is incorrectly given as "David" in the Certificate of Marriage.5,6

Daniel McDuffee and Maria McDuffee were divorced on 28 September 1885 in Fayette County, Iowa. In 1885, in the divorce action brought in Fayette County, Iowa, by his third wife Maria Hadley McDuffee, she accused him of several acts of what we would today probably call spousal abuse (e.g., Daniel "threatened to beat, bruise and wound [Maria] and to scald her with hot coffee"), as well as adultery with Jennie Darling Heath, the woman who would later become his fourth wife. Also, one neighbor testified that Daniel "intimated that [Maria] had had connexion with a negrow [sic] who had lived in the family." The divorce was granted on 25 September 1885. From The Argo (West Union, Iowa), Wednesday , October 7, 1885, page 3: Maria McDuffee vs Danl McDuffee, divorce as prayed, plff to receive 570 alimony Int 8, plff to pay costs.5

Daniel McDuffee married Jennie S. Darling, daughter of John L. Darling and Sophronia Rolfe, on 4 December 1885 in Fayette County, Iowa. The Register of Marriages gives his age as 69, his occupation as a farmer, born in Vermont, his father's name as Charles McDuffee and his mother's name as Jane Linn and states that it is his fourth marriage. (We do not know anything about Daniel's "other wife" or when he married her.) The Register of Marriages gives her name as Jennie S. Heath, ne Darling, her age as 55, born in New York, her father's name as John Darling, her mother's surname as Ralph and states that it is her second marriage.7,8,9

Daniel McDuffee died on 25 June 1893 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, at age 76. From the 14 July 1893 edition of the West Union Gazette (West Union, Fayette County, Iowa), page 7:
Dead
Daniel McDntfee [sic, McDuffee] passed calmly and peacefully away, at his home in Auburn, Sunday, June 25th [1893], at G oO [sic] o'clock pm. He died as he had lived from his youth to old age, with no fear of an angry God or endless hell. He is he father of seven children, six of whom are still living, one [apparently Medora McDuffee Stone] having preceded him to the unknown beyond. He was born in Cabot, Caledonia [sic, Washington] County, Vermont, May 26, 1817. His age was 76 years and 29 days.

Note: I found this obit by going to the online archives of the West Union Gazette and searching for "Daniel" on July 14, 1893, because McDuffy was so badly misspelled in the newspaper that searches did not find it.10

By Certificate No. 13,840, dated 1 July 1846, Daniel McDuffee obtained 40 acres of government land (legally described as the Northeast Quarter of the Northwest Quarter of Section 26, Township 4 North, Range 18 East) in Walworth County, Wisconsin Territory. Daniel's brother Nathaniel and his wife Olive (Bunnell) first settled in East Troy, Walworth County, Wisconsin, in the late 1830s.11

Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann Renslow moved from Walworth County, Wisconsin, to Fayette County Iowa, circa 1849 because their first child (George Julius) was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin, on 12 September 1848 and their next child (Georgiana Alice) was born in Fayette County, Iowa, on 14 September 1849.

Daniel McDuffee was appointed Postmaster on 28 May 1850 in Douglass (now Auburn), Fayette County, Iowa.12

Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee appeared on the census of 1850 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which show a McDuffy [sic; should be McDuffee] family consisting of a husband Daniel, 33, wife Laura A., 33, and children George J., 2 and Georgiana A., 5 months. Daniel's occupation is listed as a farmer owning $400 of real property, apparently the N 1/2 NW 1/4, Section 34, Township 95N, Range 9W, consisting of about 80 acres.

Household in 1850 Census:
Daniel McDuffee, 33
Laura A McDuffy, 33
George J McDuffy, M, 2
Georgiana A McDuffy, F, 0, Iowa.13

Daniel McDuffee was a farmer in 1850.14

By Certificate No. 61,008, dated 1 July 1851, Daniel McDuffee obtained 160 acres of government land (legally described as the South one-half of the Northwest Quarter of Section 5, and the South one-half of the Northeast Quarter of Section 6, Township 94 North, Range 9 West ) in Fayette County, Iowa.15

Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee appeared on the Iowa State census of 1854 in Westfield Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists the Daniel McDuffee household containing 2 males [probably Daniel and his son George] and 3 females [probably his wife Laura and their daughters Georgia Alice and either Marcella or Jane] and one voter and one member of the militia [Daniel].16

Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee appeared on the Iowa State census of 1856 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists D. [Daniel] McDuffee, 39, born in Vermont; his wife Laura, 40, born in Vermont; and their children G.J. [George Julius] McDuffee, 9, born in Wisconsin; M.J. [probably Georgia Alice because of the age] McDuffee, 7, born in Wisconsin; Macilia [Marcella], 5 born in Iowa; and Baby [Medora] McDuffee, 0, born in Iowa.17 He was a farmer in 1856.18

Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee appeared on the census of 1860 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which list the McDuff [sic] family as husband Daniel, 43 (born in Vermont), wife Laura, 43 (also born in Vermont), and children George J., 12 (born in Wisconsin), Jane, 10, Marcellia, 8, Medora, 5 and Delos [apparently should be Harrison or Harris], 2 (all born in Iowa). [Query: Where is their daughter Georgiana Alice who would have been about 11?] Daniel McDuff's occupation is listed as a farmer.

Household Members in the 1860 Census:
Daniel McDuff 43
Laura A McDuff 43
George J McDuff 12
Jane McDuff 10
Marcelia McDuff 8
Medora McDuff 5

Daniel McDuffee was a farmer in 1860.

Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee appeared on the census of 1870 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, whick show the McDuff [sic] family as husband Daniel, 53 (born in Vermont), wife Laura, 54 (also born in Vermont), and children (all born in Iowa) Jane, 18, Medora, 15, Harris, 11, and Adalaide, 9. [Query: What happened to Marcellia who would have been 18 in 1870?] Daniel McDuff is listed as a farmer, owning $1,200 of real property and $325 of personal property. Both of his parents are shown as foreign born, and one of Laura's parents is indicated as foreign born.

Household Members in 1870 Census:
Daniel Mcduff, 53
Laura Mcduff, 54
Jane Mcduff, 18
Madera Mcduff 15

Biography

Laura was born on 1 August 1816 in Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont. Note: The Vermont General Services Center apparently does not any any record of her birth in Vermont. She married ??? Taylor circa 1832.

Laura Ann Renslow married Daniel McDuffee, son of Charles McDuffee, Sr., and Jane Toppen Linn, circa 1847.

Laura Ann McDuffee and Daniel McDuffee were divorced before 1877. Except for this divorce and the 1870 census, we know nothing further about Laura Ann Renslow. She died possibly in 1890 at age ~74. An undocumented source reported that Laura Renslow McDuffee died in 1890.
Laura Ann Renslow was also known as Ranslow.1

Laura Ann Renslow and Daniel McDuffee moved from Walworth County, Wisconsin, to Fayette County Iowa, circa 1849 because their first child (George Julius) was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin, on 12 September 1848 and their next child (Georgiana Alice) was born in Fayette County, Iowa, on 14 September 1849.

Laura Ann McDuffee and Daniel McDuffee appeared on the census of 1850 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which show a McDuffy [sic; should be McDuffee] family consisting of a husband Daniel, 33, wife Laura A., 33, and children George J., 2 and Georgiana A., 5 months.

Georgiana A McDuffy, F, 0, Iowa.2

Laura Ann McDuffee and Daniel McDuffee appeared on the Iowa State census of 1854 in Westfield Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists the Daniel McDuffee household containing 2 males [probably Daniel and his son George] and 3 females [probably his wife Laura and their daughters Georgia Alice and either Marcella or Jane] and one voter and one member of the militia [Daniel].3

Laura Ann McDuffee and Daniel McDuffee appeared on the Iowa State census of 1856 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists D. The following was printed Cherokee Okla Republican, Dec. 17, 1982, on page 10:

". . . SAND HILL BANKER"

"Vinita Hunt is the only one left of a family of 10 of G.J. McDuffee's children. Her daughter, Nada Bernard, copied this from a Wichita paper dated 1916:

"Sand Hill Banker Suddenly Stricken.
"G.J. McDuffee of Cherokee, OK, Dies in Dispute Over a Loan - Had Been Pioneer Money Lender in Oklahoma - Friend of the Needy.

"Oklahoma's 'Sand hill banker'--G.J. McDuffee, 70 years old--dropped dead at his home in Cherokee, Ok., yesterday noon. The news was brought to Wichita today by an attorney, Webster Wilder of Cherokee.
"Mr. McDuffee was in an altercation with an obstinate 'client' of the name of Camp, who had delayed certain payments on a loan made by the 'sand hill banker' and is said to have refused to make any payments at that time. "Then I'll sue," said the pioneer loan broker, shaking his hand high over his head, a habit when greatly aroused. The arm collapsed and he stumbled backwards.
"Mary," he called to his wife. Mrs. McDuffee caught him as he fell. He died in his wife's arms. [Editor's Note: He is buried next to wife named Loretta C. who died three years before him. Mary was second wife.]
"Mr. Wilder was summoned to the McDuffee home a few minutes before his train left for Wichita. He found the dead man on the floor. Around the body were gathered Mr. McDuffee's four young children. The man with whom the banker had been displeased had gone, very much frightened. (Mrs. Hunt [Vinita] says four weren't there--that she was married then.)
"For years G.J. McDuffee was the only money merchant in that part of the country. He 'backed' many cattle men and 'grub staked' hundreds of speculators.
"At one time not long ago, there were in his home as many as forty unrecorded chattel mortgages for amounts ranging from $100 to $900. He made loans sometimes running into the thousands on big cattle deals. His rates of interest were according to the financial state of the man with whom he dealt. If the man was unable to pay high interest, a reasonably low rate was charged. It was otherwise with wealthier men.
"The Cherokee attorney, Mr. Wilder, was in consultation with Wichita attorneys today. While here, he renewed an old acquaintance with Police Dective John T. Young."
