Daniel was born on 26 May 1817 in Cabot, Washington County, Vermont.
1,2,3,4 Daniel McDuffee married
Laura Ann Renslow, daughter of
Kelley Caleb Ranslow and
Charlotte Wilder, circa 1847. Laura had apparently earlier been married to a Mr. Taylor who had evidently died and by whom she may have had several (four?) children. Note:The Vermont General Services Center apparently does not have any record of their marriage in Vermont, although I did not request a search under the name Laura Taylor for the bride. If Daniel had already obtained land in Wisconsin, perhaps they were married in Wisconsin. An unsourced report suggested that they were married in 1841. If so, that would probably have been in Wisconsin.
Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee were divorced before 1877. Except for this divorce and the 1870 census, we know nothing further about Laura Ann Renslow.
Daniel McDuffee married
Maria Hadley, daughter of
Alanson Potter and
Selphina Evarts, on 11 August 1877 in Chickasaw County, Iowa. The Chickasaw County, Iowa, Marriage Record, dated 11 August 1877, gives his name as Daniel McDuffee, her name as Maria Headley [sic] and was apparently issued "on the testimony of [his daughter] Addie McDuffee". Daniel's first name is incorrectly given as "David" in the Certificate of Marriage.
5,6 Daniel McDuffee and Maria McDuffee were divorced on 28 September 1885 in Fayette County, Iowa. In 1885, in the divorce action brought in Fayette County, Iowa, by his third wife Maria Hadley McDuffee, she accused him of several acts of what we would today probably call spousal abuse (e.g., Daniel "threatened to beat, bruise and wound [Maria] and to scald her with hot coffee"), as well as adultery with Jennie Darling Heath, the woman who would later become his fourth wife. Also, one neighbor testified that Daniel "intimated that [Maria] had had connexion with a negrow [sic] who had lived in the family." The divorce was granted on 25 September 1885. From The Argo (West Union, Iowa), Wednesday , October 7, 1885, page 3:
Maria McDuffee vs Danl McDuffee, divorce as prayed, plff to receive 570 alimony Int 8, plff to pay costs.
5 Daniel McDuffee married
Jennie S. Darling, daughter of
John L. Darling and
Sophronia Rolfe, on 4 December 1885 in Fayette County, Iowa. The Register of Marriages gives his age as 69, his occupation as a farmer, born in Vermont, his father's name as Charles McDuffee and his mother's name as Jane Linn and states that it is his fourth marriage. (We do not know anything about Daniel's "other wife" or when he married her.) The Register of Marriages gives her name as Jennie S. Heath, ne Darling, her age as 55, born in New York, her father's name as John Darling, her mother's surname as Ralph and states that it is her second marriage.
7,8,9 Daniel McDuffee died on 25 June 1893 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, at age 76. From the 14 July 1893 edition of the West Union Gazette (West Union, Fayette County, Iowa), page 7:
Dead Daniel McDntfee [sic, McDuffee] passed calmly and peacefully away, at his home in Auburn, Sunday, June 25th [1893], at G oO [sic] o'clock pm. He died as he had lived from his youth to old age, with no fear of an angry God or endless hell. He is he father of seven children, six of whom are still living, one [apparently Medora McDuffee Stone] having preceded him to the unknown beyond. He was born in Cabot, Caledonia [sic, Washington] County, Vermont, May 26, 1817. His age was 76 years and 29 days.
Note: I found this obit by going to the online archives of the West Union Gazette and searching for "Daniel" on July 14, 1893, because McDuffy was so badly misspelled in the newspaper that searches did not find it.
10 By Certificate No. 13,840, dated 1 July 1846, Daniel McDuffee obtained 40 acres of government land (legally described as the Northeast Quarter of the Northwest Quarter of Section 26, Township 4 North, Range 18 East) in Walworth County, Wisconsin Territory. Daniel's brother Nathaniel and his wife Olive (Bunnell) first settled in East Troy, Walworth County, Wisconsin, in the late 1830s.
11 Daniel McDuffee and
Laura Ann Renslow moved from Walworth County, Wisconsin, to Fayette County Iowa, circa 1849 because their first child (George Julius) was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin, on 12 September 1848 and their next child (Georgiana Alice) was born in Fayette County, Iowa, on 14 September 1849.
Daniel McDuffee was appointed Postmaster on 28 May 1850 in Douglass (now Auburn), Fayette County, Iowa.

15 Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee appeared on the Iowa State census of 1854 in Westfield Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists the Daniel McDuffee household containing 2 males [probably Daniel and his son George] and 3 females [probably his wife Laura and their daughters Georgia Alice and either Marcella or Jane] and one voter and one member of the militia [Daniel].

[probably Georgia Alice because of the age] McDuffee, 7, born in Wisconsin; Macilia [Marcella], 5 born in Iowa; and Baby [Medora] McDuffee, 0, born in Iowa.
17 He was a farmer in 1856.
18 Daniel McDuffee and Laura Ann McDuffee appeared on the census of 1860 in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which list the McDuff [sic] family as husband Daniel, 43 (born in Vermont), wife Laura, 43 (also born in Vermont), and children George J., 12 (born in Wisconsin), Jane, 10, Marcellia, 8, Medora, 5 and Delos [apparently should be Harrison or Harris], 2 (all born in Iowa). [Query: Where is their daughter Georgiana Alice who would have been about 11?] Daniel McDuff's occupation is listed as a farmer.

[Query: What happened to Marcellia who would have been 18 in 1870?] Daniel McDuff is listed as a farmer, owning $1,200 of real property and $325 of personal property.
