All are shown as being born in New York, although Elisha was actually born in Massachusetts. Living with the family were Ann Corcoran, 22, and William Corcoran, 20 and a carpenter, both born in Ireland. Ann and William presumably were the late Margaret Corcoran's siblings. Ann may have been caring for her late sister's four young children, and William working as a carpenter with Elisha. Later, Elisha married Palmyra Lewis of Petersburg, New York, by whom he had six more children.

9 When James Bartlett was about 20, in 1868 he left Troy, NY, for Wisconsin, where he farmed for the next 20 years [about 1868 to 1887].
James Spellman Bartlett appeared on the census of 1870 in Sugar Creek, Walworth County, Wisconsin, which lists Jas. Bartlett, 24, born in New York, and a farm hand in the Merritt Chatfiield household.
10 According to the 1879 History of Rock County, Wisconsin (page 669): The first members of the United Brethren Society [1857] included Ebenezer Bullock, James Bartlett and Levi Bullock. According to an article in the 21 March 1946 edition of the Janesville Gazette, the "class" was formed at South Lima, two miles northwest of Lima Center. "There a frame church edifice was erected and dedicated in 1857. The following year the United Brethren sold a half share in their building ot the Lima Center Methodists and helped them to move the structure into the village. In 1871, the United Brethren erected another building, this time in Lima Center."

Emma Jane Bartlett moved from Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin, to Orange County, CA, where their oldest child Henry died in 1888. He had caught pnemonia on the train from Wisconsin. circa 1888.
In early 1888, James and Emma [Bullock] Bartlett and their three children, Henry, Cora and Clarence, packed their belongings and left Rock County, Wisconsin, by train for Orange County, California, where they planned to raise citrus fruit in the warm Southern California sun. Tragically, their oldest son Henry developed pneumonia during the winter train trip and died at Tustin, Orange County, California, in 1888 at age 15. Henry was buried at Santa Ana, California. His mother, Emma, was devastated by Henry's death and refused to stay in California. So later that same year [1888], James and Emma Bartlett and their two surviving children, Cora and Clarence], boarded the train to get a new start operating a hotel in Fairbury, Nebraska. In Fairbury, Clarence graduated from high school in 1898 where he played guard on the football team. While fingering his revolver one day, he accidently discharged the weapon sending the bullet deep into his thigh. The doctor was unable to remove it, and in later years the embedded bullet enabled Clarence to forecast the approach of stormy weather. In 1898, Cora, 21, married Samuel W. Carrol, 30 (born September 19, 1867), and on October 4, 1898, a son, Glenn Bartlett Carrol, was born to them at Fairbury.

11 James Spellman Bartlett and Emma Jane Bartlett moved from Madison, Lake County, South Dakota, to Salem, McCook County, SD, in May 1901. where they managed the Lewis House hotel. Built in 1885, the Lewis House (with 44 guest rooms, four sample rooms for traveling salesmen, a dining room and a huge lobby) was in its heyday one of the finest hotels in the area and a top attraction in Dakota Territory. He moved with
Clarence Emery Bartlett and
Ethel Margie Shepard from Salem, McCook County, South Dakota, to Northfield, MN, circa 1902. where they operated the Archer House hotel and sold real estate. Their first child, daughter Mae, was born there on 5 April 1903. Lonely after his wife Emma's death, James Bartlett lived with Clarence and Ethel for most of the rest of his life.
His wife, Emma, died on 14 February 1902 in Salem House hotel, Salem, McCook County, South Dakota, at age 52, leaving him a widower. It was in Salem, South Dakota, that Emma Bartlett's earthly travels ended on Valentine's Day 1902 when she succumbed after months of suffering to stomach cancer and at age 51 joined her beloved son Henry in death. Later that year, James, Clarence and Ethel Bartlett moved to Northfield, Minnesota, where they operated the Archer House hotel and sold real estate. They continued these activities as they moved from Northfield Sioux City, Iowa, (operating the Oxford House hotel), to Minneota (operating the Pacific Hotel), Hancock (operating the Hotel Columbia), Tracy (operating the Exchange Hotel), Browns Valley (operating yet another hotel), all in Minnesota, and Dell Rapids, South Dakota, where Clarence's sister Cora lived with her husband Sam and son Glenn Carroll. Lonely after his wife Emma's death, James Bartlett lived with Clarence and Ethel for most of the rest of his life. James died at Dell Rapids on February 21, 1918, at age 70 and is buried beside his wife Emma at Madison.

They lived in a two-story house on a corner at 301 3rd Street, Tracy, Minnesota. They were in the real estate business and also managed the Exchange Hotel, located at 144 4th Street, but the hotel building no longer exists. Clarence and Ethel Bartlett's third daughter, Marian Eleanor Bartlett, was born in Tracy on 1 June 1917.

JAMES S. BARTLETT (who came to Lyon County in 1903 [sic?]) was born in Troy, New York, January 16, 1848. There he was educated and at the age of twenty went to Rock County, Wisconsin, where he farmed for the next twenty years [i.e., from about 1868 to 1888]. The Far West brought is appeal to Mr. Bartlett, and he spent one year in Southern California, thence going to Fairbury, Nebraska, where he lived during the next ten years [i.e., from about 1889 to 1899]. While at Fairbury he started in the hotel business, which occupation has claimed his attention since that time. Mr. Bartlett conducted a hotel in Madison, South Dakota, for two years, and during the next eight years conducted at different times hotels at Salem, South Dakota; Northfield, Minnesota; Sioux City, Iowa; and Minneota, Minnesota. From Minneota Mr. Bartlett moved to Tracy and has since conducted the Exchange Hotel, in partnership with his son Clarence E. [Bartlett], who is also a real estate broker.
Mr. Bartlett's parents were Elisha W. and Margaret (Corcoran) Bartlett, the former a native of Massachusetts and the latter of Cork [sic], Ireland. Margaret Corcoran came to this country when a child, and her parents settled in Troy, New York. To Elisha and Margaret Corcoran were born four children, namely: Henry, Louisa, Mary and James S. [Bartlett]. Our subject is the only child living. Margaret (Corcoran) Bartlett died sixty-two years ago [i.e., about 1850]. Elisha Bartlett later maried Palmyra Lewis, a native of Petersburg, New York. To this union six children were born. Emma, Julia, Anna and Fanny are living [in 1912], and a daughter, Lucy, and a son, Lewis, died a number of years ago.
On March 19 [sic; should be 11], 1872, James S. Bartlett was united in marriage to Emma J. Bullock, the ceremony taking place in Rock County, Wisconsin. The wife died in Salem, South Dakota, February 14, 1903 [sic; should be 1902]. Three children were born to the couple, as follows: Henry, who died in Orange, California, at the age of fifteen and was buried at Santa Anna [sic], California; Clarence E., a real estate dealer and associated with his father in conducting the Exchange Hotel [in Tracy]; and Cora (Mrs. Sam Carroll), of Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Mrs. Carroll has one son, Glenn, aged thirteen years.
Clarence Bartlett, son of the subject of this biographical sketch, was married to Ethel Shepard, a native of Lake County, South Dakota, the marriage taking place at Madison, South Dakota. They are the parents of two children, both girls. Mae is aged ten years and Margaret is seven.
The Thursday, 21 February 1918 edition of the Dell Rapids (Minnehaha County, South Dakota) Tribune carried the following obituary for James S. Bartlett (page 2, column 3):
J.S. BARTLETT J.S. Bartlett, father of Mrs. Sam Carroll, died at the hospital yesterday morning, February 20 [1918].
Mr. Bartlett, whose home was in Minneapolis, was 70 years old, and had been in failing health for quite a while. Mrs. Carroll went to Minneapolis and brought him back with her about two weeks ago, and continuing to fail he had be brought to the hospital, where he passed away. He leaves besides his daughter, Mrs. Carroll, one son, C. E. Bartlett, of Tracy, Minnesota, who had been here with him since last Friday.
The funeral will be held Saturday [26 February 1918] morning at 10 o'clock at the Carroll home, conducted by Rev. Gage, and the remains will be taken to Madison for interment.
