Lancaster Co., PA, USA, Dorothy Houghton, age 95, of Columbia, PA, formerly of Landisville, PA, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at St. Anne's Retirement Community in Columbia, PA.
Born in Asheville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Muncy and Edna Farmer Roark and the wife of the late Lee R. Houghton.

Dorothy worked for the former Watt and Shand Department Store.

She was a member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Lancaster and was formerly active in the New Voice Club.

She was also a former member of Eastern Star. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing with her late husband.
She is survived by her son, H. Eugene Brown, husband of Reba, of Lititz, PA; stepdaughter, Carol Houghton, of Harrisburg, PA; sister, Thelma Rothwell, of Elkton, MD and brother, Jerry Lee Roark, husband of Lorene, of Diamondback, CA; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Dorothy's Life Celebration Memorial Service at St. Anne's Retirement Community Chapel, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, PA 17512, with Chaplain Dan Derk and Pastor Clifton Eshbach officiating on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends at St. Anne's on Friday from 10:30 AM until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Dorothy's name to St. Anne's Retirement Community.

Bennington, VT, USA, Barbara Ann Henry (n e Houghton), formerly of Bennington, Vermont, passed away on December 31, 2017 after a short illness.

Barbara is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, James P. Henry, and her nine children, Barbara Henry (Adam Fields), Maureen Henry (Paul Kemp), Donna Henry (Dan Procopio), Jim Henry (Terry Henry), Marianne Henry Saylor (Shawn Saylor), Bill Henry (Laurie), Elaine Harwood, Karen O'Malley (Kevin O'Malley), and Janine McNulty (Mike McNulty). Barbara is also survived by her brother, Francis Houghton and sister-in- law Barbara Houghton. Barbara was a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren: Emily Henry, Mollie Henry, Jocelyn Harwood, Alanna O'Malley, Kaitlyn Henry, Megan Henry, Nathan Harwood, Simon Kemp and Analeise O'Malley, and one great granddaughter, Harper Henry.

Barbara was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1939, to Ida Mae and William Henry Houghton. Barbara graduated from West Catholic High School for Girls in 1957. She graduated from Bennington College with a B.A. in painting and ceramics in 1985.

Barbara raised her family in Bennington, Vermont, where she lived for 44 years. Since 2014, Barbara lived with her husband and daughter, Donna, in Aldan, PA.

Barbara was happiest spending time with her family. Barbara encouraged individuality, creativity and curiosity in her children and grandchildren.

Barbara was an artist who worked in several mediums. She discovered a true passion for abstract painting while a student at Bennington College. She worked in acrylic, pastel and charcoal. She also created sculptural ceramic pieces. More recently, Barbara made jewelry using colored polymer clay and often employed the same technique of layering many colors that she used in her abstract paintings.

Barbara loved to read mystery novels, watch English mystery television series and movies, play word games and keep up with the world on Facebook.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Radnor Valley Country Club, 555 Sproul Rd, Villanova, PA 19085.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Pennsylvania SunCatcher Fund, c/o Holisticare Hospice, LLC, 685 Kromer Ave., Berwyn, PA 19312

To whom it may concern;
I ran across a webpage when researching the background of the last name Houghton. I dont know if you are still doing this but please let me know if you are because I may have some interesting information.
A few years ago, I bought an Ancestry DNA kit for my son. Naturally I helped him fill in as many blanks as I could. When we approached the civil war times I saw something odd...my great, great grandfather had a brother with the same name! Long story short, the US Census soon revealed that he was only 1 yr old when the war ended and his father Mr. Houghton returned from the war but died soon after returning. Houghton's wife (my gggf's mother) apparently remarried Mr.Whitehead and that same year he adopted my great great grandfather...therefore Charles Houghton became Charles Whitehead! In fact he also adopted at least one other child too. Therefore, many people with the last name Whitehead, carry the dna of the Houghtons ever since then!
