The commanding officer of the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory was killed in a head-on automobile accident along the Gulf Beach Highway.
Capt. James O. Houghton, 45, had commanded the laboratory since June 1985, and was scheduled to leave his job July 1 to work at the Naval Medical Command in Washington, D.C. Capt. Houghton's car collided with another Thursday night near Pensacola.
"We're all in shock," said Lt. Cmdr. Tom Fleischman, the laboratory's director of program development. "He had to be about the best boss I ever worked for. He had a tendency to say that when he found talent, he got the hell out of people's way and let them work."
Capt. Houghton, born in Littlefield, Texas, was a graduate of Union College in Nebraska and earned his medical degree at Loma Linda University, Calif. He interned at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital in 1969 and was designated a naval flight surgeon the next year.
He served with the First and Third Marine Air Wings in Santa Ana, Calif., DaNang, Vietnam, and Futenma, Okinawa, and had been senior medical officer aboard the USS Oriskany and the USS Midway.
Capt. Houghton had conducted research in acceleration physiology at the Naval Air Development Center in Warminister, Pa. He also had worked as a special assistant for aerospace medicine at the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C.

Biography

Derl Houghton: James graduated from Loma Linda School of Medicine. James was a career Navy Officer. He was a medical doctor and flight surgeon (pilot) and dedicated to Aerospace medicine. He was in the NASA Astronaut program. He spent at least two tours in Viet Nam in MASH Units with the Marines. He was a Captain, USN. He was never married and dedicated his life to helping others. When he was The Commander of the Naval Hospitals where he was assigned, he would often work in the emergency rooms as needed or to help when manpower was less than desired. The was 6 months from retirement and coming home to open a private practice when he was killed in an auto accident by drunk teenagers. After a Philadelphia Naval Hospital intership, he was designated a naval flight surgeon in 1970.
As a naval flight surgeon, he served with the First and Third Marine Air Wings in Santa Ana, Calif., DaNang, Vietnam, and Futenma, Okinawa, and he had been senior medical officer aboard the USS Oriskany and the USS Midway.²

ROTAN — Anna Lou Houghton, 90, a lifetime Fisher County resident, died Sunday at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev James Brigham officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Houghton was born in Royston and lived in the Royston MeCaulley area all her life. She was a member of McCaulley Baptist Church. She married Frank Houghton in 1928 in McCaulley; he proceded her in death
Survivors include one daughter, Jeannine Robertson of McCaulley; three sisters, Willie Sumerlin of Snyder, Rosa Young of Littlefield and Irene Clark of Rotan; five brothers, Paul Gruben of Lovington, N.M., John , Gruben of Rotan, Ernest Gruben of Kermit, Troy Gruben of Sylvester and David Gruben of Roby; two grandsons, eight great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Association of West Texas.

Obituary

Sue M. Houghton, of Midland, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2007. She was born September 24, 1917 in Denison, Texas, where she graduated from high school during the great depression years, and then from business college from which she received an appointment to the Office of the Postmaster General in Washington, D.C. After serving two years as secretary in the Office of the Postmaster General in Washington, she transferred to Dallas and the Department of Labor. Also during this time, she attended Dallas College of Southern Methodist University, along with Frank L. Houghton, Jr., who at that time was employed by Seaboard Oil Company. They were married April 14, 1941 in Dallas. After the World War II years, where then Lt. Houghton served in Japan, they moved to Houston where they lived two years before coming to Midland in 1948. Mr. Houghton passed away in 1987. In Midland, Mrs. Houghton was active in some civic affairs and was a charter member of the Midland Symphony Guild, a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity where she served on the Altar Guild, early days Vacation Bible School, Brownie and Cub Scouts, and was founder of ACOA in Midland. She is survived by four children: Judy Houghton McCrary of Midland, TX; and R. Miller Houghton, of Midland and Houston, TX; Nancy Houghton Smith of Arlington, TX; and John C. Houghton of Ruidoso, NM and Midland, TX; and the following grandchildren: Katherine Kelly McCrary, Stephanie Houghton Sowell, Erica Christmas, twin grandsons, Samuel Smith and Matthew Smith, and Stephen and Laura Houghton, and great-grandchildren, Katherine, Kiersten, and Megan. Sue was lovingly cared for by Kaye Nassett, Belia Bonilla, Diana Soto, Dorothy Landry, Teresa Reyes, and Virginia Franco.

The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Friday, April 13, 2007 between the hours of 7:00 P.M. and 8:30 P.M. Funeral services have been scheduled for 3:00 P.M. Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Stephen Houghton, Samuel Smith, Matthew Smith, William Brett Sowell, Charles Stoddard, Bill Buskirk, Ed Corrigan, Joe Golding, and Doug Rucker. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Smith, Dr. Gregory W. Bartha, Harry Miller II, Dr. Harry Miller III, the Rev. James Otterness, Herbert H. "Hoot" Martin, Bill, Bruce and Brad Connery, Ted Collins, Herb Wales, Lee Majors, Ed Todd, Armand Baldinelli, Dr. Mike Miller, Dr. Charles Younger, Ralph Covington, Russell Bennett, A.M. Services Thursday For Mrs. Houghton

Mrs. Jannie Luttrell Houghton, 80, of 16 N. Jackson died at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday in Park Plaza-Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Robert Massie Funeral Home Chapel with C. A. Harguess; minister of Western Hills Church of Christ, and Stan Maiden, minister of Johnson Street Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Houghton was born Jan. 17, 1890 in Grayson County. She was married to Fred Houghton Oct. 20, 1906 at San Angelo. She had lived here for 70 years.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Lynn Houghton of San Angelo; a daughter, Doney Houghton of Los Angeles, Calif; a brother, J. C. Luttrell of Abilene and three grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Ed White, R. H. Moos, Homer Jordan Jr., Marvin Barnes, Marvin Allen and Dick Swindoll, all of San Angelo.
