Dr. James B. Houghton
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church for Dr. James B. Houghton, 46, of 1901 W. 26th St., who died Thursday at a local hospital. Dr. Houghton was born Oct. 3. 1928. at Willow Lake. He married Madeline Ellis Aug. 12, 1950, in Brookings. He served with the Air Force for two years. In 1959 Dr. Houghton began his practice of dentistry in Sioux Falls. Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Suzanne, Orange City, Iowa, and Stephanie, Sioux Falls; a son, Steven, Brookings; the mother, Mrs. Inez Houghton, Sioux Falls, and a sister, Mrs. Larry Phillippi, Mantua, Ohio. (Miller)

Adapted from a biography written by Leo Albert Houghton:

He met his wife after arriving in Eureka looking for work in the booming mining operation there. He shied away from social situations and preferred to be at home with his family. He worked long, late hours as a miner and was remembered by his wife as being very devoted to his family and determined to provide a living for them. One night as he was walking home from work, he saw a fire in the distance and thought, "some poor family is being burned out tonight." As he came closer he realized it was his own home that was burning, and was completely destroyed. His elder son remembered him carrying him several miles to a doctor in the dark after the boy had been severely injured. George loved baseball, and referred to his younger son as "my little man", which led to Leo being nicknamed "Manny". George died young from kidney disease.⁴

Juliet Sperry Houghton, 93, our loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully July 29, 2002.

She was born Nov 16, 1908 in Nephi, UT to William H. and Maude Blackett Sperry. On May 22, 1925, Juliet married Thomas LaVar Houghton in Salt Lake City, UT. He preceded her in death Nov 30, 1989. Juliet was a devoted wife and mother and a wonderful homemaker.

Survivors: daughters, Betty Pickering, Jean Miltenberger, both Salt Lake City, Ann Castillo (Joe), Rio Ran-cho, NM; son, William "Gil" Houghton, wife, Renee, Salt Lake City; daughter-in-law, Janiel Houghton, Sandy; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchil-dren; and one great great-grand-child. Preceded in death by son, Richard "Dick;" daughter, Kathryn; two grandchildren, Curt, Paula Miltenberger; son-in-law, Lewis "Wally" Mil-tenberger.

Family funeral was Sat. Aug 3, 2002, Salt Lake City. Interment, Vine Bluff Cemetery, Nephi, UT. The family expresses appreciation to the doctors and nurses at Willow Wood Care Center for their care and devotion to our Mom.¹
