Robert Allen Houghton

Robert Allen Houghton, 72, of Asheville. N.C., formerly of Candler, died Sunday, Sept, 3, at his home.

Mr. Houghton was born in Clarke County, the son of the late Clarence and Leila Houghton. He retired from the American Enka Corp. and was a 1941 graduate of Berryville High School. He attended Duke University of Richmond on basketball and baseball scholarships. He was a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War 11.

He played professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers organization and the Asheville Tourist in 1948 and 1950. He umpired baseball and softball games and was active in youth baseball for the Hominy Valley Youth Athletic Association and instrumental in forming the Babe Ruth program.

He was a charter member of the Clarke County Athletic Hall of Fame. He was nominated to the ASA Softball Hall of Fame as an umpire and was member of the NCHS Official Association in baseball am basketball.

Surviving are his daughter Caryl Anne Houghton of Asheville; two sons, Rick Houghton of Asheville and George Houghton of Candler and five grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Grace Funeral Home in Asheville, by the Rev. Dr. James
H. Johnson. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery in Berryville. Memorials may be made c/o the Hominy Valley Youth Athletic Association, c/o Rick Houghton, 24 Everlake Dr., Asheville, N.C., 28806

Martha Crook Houghton, of Asheville, passed away Saturday, August 26, 2000, at the Hospice Solace Center.

Mrs. Houghton was born December 20, 1929, the daughter of the late Foy Crook and Loice Crook Franklin. She was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and was retired from American Enka. She later worked at Belks at the Asheville Mall. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Chunn's Cove Road.

She is survived by her daughter, Caryl Anne Houghton Coleman and her husband, William Fred Coleman, Jr. of Asheville; two sons, Richard A. (Rick) Houghton of Asheville and George Dale Houghton and his wife Darlene
Greene Houghton of Candler; one half-sister, Nancy Crook Simpkins of Leicester; a sister-in-law, June D. Crook of Candler; four grandsons, George Bryan Houghton of the US Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO, Mark Daniel Houghton of Candler, Jeffrey Scot Houghton of El Paso, TX, and Patrick Andrew Houghton of Candler; one granddaughter, Erin Marie Houghton of El Paso; and life-long friends, Hattie Carland Miles and Evelyn Smith Wright.

Burial to follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.³

He was a member of K of C .
John was a Catholic by faith. He retired from the Power Plant.
He was a native of Madison, Indiana.
He is survived by his wife, Mary K Houghton, brother, Hugh Houghton
( Debbie ), sister, Barbara Youchum ( Lawrence ), his beloved dog, Tucker.
