EmailMay 24, 2021My daughter Kathy told me about your ancestry project but I was away and I am only now back home. My name is Larry (Lawrence) Kenneth Houghton Parkes. My father Fred, developed by personal gathering of information, our family tree. Not too complete but this was long before computers, word processing, spreadsheets, the internet, search engines to say nothing of ancestry programs. He passed away at the age of 58 in 1961. I have attached a copy of our family tree and also a copy of my grandmother Jessie’s (Jessamine) birth certificate. She was born to Walter and Louisa (Houghton) Freeman in Brighton, England, in 1872.



It was important to my parents that the male children in our family carried the Houghton name as one of our middle names which you can readily see from the chart. We were never really told why but in deference to my father we all did. The mythology was that sometime in the past the families were joined (Houghton-Parkes) and that someday in the future when our fortunes improved the names would once again be joined.



My grandmother Jessie lived with us upstairs in our home on Mathers Avenue in West Vancouver and she was very important to me as she taught me how to read and write and basic arithmetic before I went to school at the age of five. She was very independent and did not suffer fools gladly! She passed away in our home in 1948. I have attached a picture of her and also of her and Alfred my grandfather.



I have questions which I probably will never know the answers to. Alfred died in Seattle where my father was born, but he was quite young. What was his cause of death? [As was a common trade in those days he was a house painter...so lead poisoning?] The result was that after he passed away Jessie with her two children, Fred and Doris, moved to Vancouver, B.C. where her mother Annie, my great grandmother, was. Second question; when and why did Annie immigrate to Vancouver without my great grandfather Sam? I will probably never know. That’s when we wish our parents were still available to us to answer such questions. Of course we don’t think of such questions when we are young.



That is one of main reasons why my project is an autobiography, utilizing multi-media, and trying to write it for my granddaughters children’s children – in other words for future generations in our family to try and answer the questions that we are unable answer – and as we get older, we all have them! To tell them our stories. I call the memoir “My Memories”. I realize the fallibility of memory, but they are faithfully my memories and are my essential truth.



I have not yet been on your website but I will. Good for you. A wonderful altruistic endeavour!

She was one that never wanted kids to begin with. I have no idea who he is. I didn't;t find out about her parents yet. I will be writing her husband so hopefully I will get more information down the road. He is 83 years old so I will be writing him soon. Mrs. Pullen was born in Cheyenne County, Nebraska, on October 20, 1951, daughter of the late William and Ruth Long Houghton. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Rick Pullen of the home; two daughters, Nicole L. Hiatt and Michelle Cox, both of Indiana; her grandchildren, Logan Cox, Dalton and Dakota Hiatt; a great-grandchild, Darby Cox; two brothers, Billy Houghton of Florida and Terry Houghton of Virginia; a sister, Heidi Purcell of Georgia.

A memorial service was held Monday at Brunswick Islands Baptist Church with pastor David Stratton officiating.
