Deceased Name: Virgil Houghton
Virgil Houghton, 92, of Strange Creek passed away July 21, 2009.

Born Oct. 10, 1915, he was a son of the late Homer and Lewie Henderson Houghton. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin, Charles, Ernest, Earl, Lester and Flem Houghton; and sisters, Alice Goad, Vina Dean and Vada Houghton.

He was a coal miner, having worked in the mines in Widen, and a farmer. He was a member of Gassaway Church of Christ.

Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife, Norma Mae Ratliff Houghton; sons, Thomas (Janice) Houghton of Parkersburg and Lonnie Houghton of Strange Creek; and a daughter, Ruth (Dale) Lewis of Strange Creek. Also surviving are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 24, at the Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with the Rev. Gene Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Houghton family cemetery.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25312.

Richard M. Roach Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Edna Hull Houghton, 133 Main St., Blakely, died yesterday at home following a long illness. A native of Blakely, Mrs. Houghton was a daughter of Edgar J. Hull and the late Louise Reynolds Hull. She was the wife of Reginald A. Houghton.     Mrs. Houghton was a direct descendent of James Reynolds, one of the founders of Keystone Academy, Factoryville, and of William Hull, one of the early Mid-Valley settlers. She was a graduate of Blakely High School, West Chester State Teachers College and attended Simmons College, Boston, Mass., and Columbia University, N. Y. Prior to her marriage she taught in Blakely Public Schools and in a private school in Colorado. During the past 11 years she operated a florist business established by her father more than 50 years ago. She was a charater member of the Blakely Business and Professional Women’s Club and had been serving as a member of the board of directors. She was also a member of Grace Chapter 216. OES; a past president of Columbus School Parent-Teachers As- sociation and was an organizer and leader of the first troop 01 Girl Scouts and Brownies in MidValley.
Surviving, in addition to her husband and father, are a daughter, Louise, Cleveland, Ohio; three sons, William H., also of Cleveland; James A., Philadelphia, and Thomas, at home; a sister, Mrs. Thomas Rogers, Glen Falls, N. Y.,' and a grandson, William Houghton.
