Biography

Humphrey was born on 1 November 1795.1 He married Remembrance Andrews. Humphrey Janes Jr.'s wife Remembrance Andrews may have been the sister of (1) Hannah Andrews (??-1833), the first wife of his older brother, Hiram Janes, Sr., and (2) Deborah Andrews (1807-45), the first wife of his cousin Levi Bullock. The Andrews sisters may have been natives of South Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont. The Andrews name is sometime spelled "Andrus".

. Humphrey died on circa 1848, at age ~53. Note: I am not certain of the source of the "circa 1848" date of death for Humphrey Janes, Jr.; therefore, it may not be reliable. Janes, page 178 and Janes-Peek, page 135 both apparently incorrectly give his date of death as 16 November 1845, which is actually the date of death for his father, Humphrey Janes, Sr.
His date and location of death is not known. He is apparently not buried in either the North Johnstown or Magnolia Cemeteries in Rock County, Wisconsin. It is possible that Humphrey Janes, Jr. did not emigrate from South Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont, to Rock County, Wisconsin, with the rest of his family.

I just ran across your Chambers info at RootsWeb. There is one error I caught immediately. My great grandfather was Cyrus Chambers, Sr (b. 1795 in Tunbridge, Orange Co., VT). He had a daughter, Octavia, and a son Octavius. You have the latter as Octaviua and a female. However, Octavia and Octavius were not twins.

Also, I was interested in your saying that Cyrus, Sr. and his two wives were buried at Patterson Cemetery, aka "McCloud." I had never heard of this aka. I have visited the little, grown-over cemetery, which in the early 1970's was moved to Worthington. This particular part of Worthington was known as Williamsville, but is no longer called that.

I probably have quite a bit of Chambers info which you may not have. I would be glad to share. Likewise, you will surely have info I don't have. Octavius (Oct) was my grandfather (d. 1926) and my father was Lester William Chambers (1885-1962). I was born in 1925 and live at Delavan, WI.

Hi Paul,

I am glad to hear from you.Actually, itis my husband Bobwho is connected to Cyrus Chambers and his first wife, Susanna Janes. This isthrough their daughter, Mary "Louisa" Chambers. She was born May 10, 1827 in Delaware Co. OH. Louisa married John Bunyan Waters October 9, 1845 in Delaware Co. OH. John B. Waters was born October 9, 1825 in Delaware Co. OH and died August 10, 1864 (during the Civil War at Hampton hospital, VA.) They had six children: Mitchell Dwight, Marella Susannah,Annis (Annise),Willie,Eugene Cyrus, and Kittie.I have more info on the children if you want it). Louisadid notmarry againand died January 28, 1913 in Westerville, OH. She is buried in Otterbein Cemetery in Westerville,Franklin Co., OH.The death certificate info was given by Louisa's daughter, Kittie. The parents are listed as Cyrus Chambers and Susanna Janes. The cause of death was pelvic cancer. My husband's line continues through Mitchell D. Waters. I have a copy of the certificate and John's Civil War papers.

I have been working on the Waters familyoff and on over the past 3 years. I have basically been using a rough outline given to me by a relative and I gather info from Ancestry and various other websites. So not all my info is documented. I try my best to document things, but as you know it isn't always possible.

Lately, I have been trying to confirm the children of Cyrus and Susanna and Cyrus and second wife Margaret. I am still not sure if I have all of them and with the correct mothers. I have the following children for Cyrus and Susanna:

William b. 1826, Louisa b. 1827, Horace b. 1828, Seymour b. 1831(2), Cyrus JR. b. 1833, Mary b 1837, and Martha b. 1841.

Cyrus and Margaret's children: Horatio b. 1844, Sarah b.1846, Octavia b.1848, Octavius b. 1849, and George T b. 1853.

One of my problems is a note I found on someone's family page that says "Susan died Nov. 5, 1844 leaving seven children in addition to an infant who died shortly after his mother. The baby's sister, Louisa Chambers, was teaching school and had been leaving the baby at the Coppage home in the morning and picking him up at the end of the school day. The baby had been cared for by Margaret Coppage, who later became Cyrus Chambers second wife. Source unknown. Notes from Ruby Pugh.

My question is this, if Susan died Nov 5, 1844 wouldn't the baby mentioned above be Horatio born Nov 25, 1844? Yet Horatio is listed as a child of Margaret. Cyrus and Margaret didn't marry till January of the following year. Maybe you have info that could clear this up.

You said your relative was Susanna Janes and I see you have tons of info on her line!.

I am sorry to say I do not have my info on the computer, but rather in numerous notebooks...maybe someday I will get modern!
Let me know if you want additional info I might have.

I will close for now. I look forward to hearing from you.

Subject: Re: Louisa Chambers Waters

Hi Paul,

Actually, I am not sure if Louisa's first name was actually Mary. The infowas handed down to me and I have also seen Melissa Louisa used. Perhaps she used her middle name instead of her first, I am not sure. I am only sure her parents were Cyrus and Susanna. My original info did not list Mary and Martha as children of Cyrus and Susanna butI did find these names on the 1850 census that list Cyrus and second wife Margaret with the children minus Louisa who has been married for about 5 years.

I think the death date for Susanna is correct. It appears on the cemetery listings of Delaware Co. OH that I came across on the US GENWEB project. This date also appears in an articlepublished about Cyrusin the Delaware Herald onMarch 15. 1887Itsays "Mr. Chambers wife died November 5, 1844. He has since lost his second wife. Twelve children as the fruits of these marriages still survive." Actually, If you look at the 1850 census and add my Louisa there are 12 children's names listed.

So, the question is if the death date is correct for Susanna, how could Horatio be born Nov. 25th, 1844? Maybe he was born the following year 1845. This would make him a child of Margaret and Cyrus. Since they married in January of 1845, it is a possibility.
I am going to try to contact Connie Gallucci to see if she can shed some light on this. Also, I hope to reach Everett.

I will let you know what I find out. I also hope to glean the Janes family history you have on Ancestry as well.

Thanks for your help.
