HORACE JANES, farmer, P. O. Northville, was born Aug. 23, 1825, in North East Township, son of Oliver and Emily (Lee) Janes, the former a relative of the eminent Dr. Janes, and the latter a sister of the well-known Elder Lee, natives of Vermont; came to Erie Co. in 1816 with his father, Humphrey Janes, a soldier in the war of 1812, and a farmer of good standing. Oliver Janes had ten children, of whom are now living Mrs. Betsy Goodrich; Oliver, married to Ellen Philip; Hannah, married first to Moses Barnett, afterward to Mr. La Rue; Hiram, married to A. Tidd; Seth O., and our subject, who was married March 27, 1860, to Mary, daughter of Harry and Polly (Crawford) Rogers, the latter a daughter of Thomas Crawford, an old settler on the lake shore. To this union were born 6 children, viz.: Emma L., born July 17, 1861, died Jan. 10, 1880; Addie M., born Jan. 29, 1863; Arthur H., born Jan. 9, 1865, died Sept. 1, 1883; Frank C., born May 9, 1868, died Jan. 10 1869; Wm. H., born Nov. 18, 1869; Mary E., born Sept. 7, 1871. The deceased are Frank, Emma and Arthur. Mr. Janes is a strongly-built man, at one time weighing 267 pounds. He once lifted a 43 gallon pipe of liquor from the floor to the top of the counter and back again to the floor.

Apparently their son George, who was 3 years old in the 1860 census, must have died before 1870.8 He was a farmer, owning real property valued at $1,200 and personal property valued at $650. in 1870.9 He and Almira Janes appeared on the census of 1880 in Little Sioux, Woodbury County, Iowa, which lists Hiram Janes, 46, born in Pennsylvania, both parents born in Vermont; his wife Elmira [sic], 46, born in New York, both parents born in New York; and their nephew Willie Comer (Corner?), 7, born in Illinois, father born in Canada, mother born in Wisconsin.4,10 He was a farmer in 1880.4

His wife, Almira, died on 27 October 1898 from congestion of lungs in Oxford, Johnson County, Iowa, at age 64, leaving him a widower.7,3,1112

Almira Tidd was born on 19 March 1834 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York. Her death certificate gives her date of death as 27 October 1898 at age 64 years, 7 months and 10 days, which would make her birth date 17 March 1834. Her death certificate gives her birthplace as "Almira, NY" -- same as her first name -- but it is most likely "Elmira, NY".1,2 She married Hiram Janes III.3

Almira Tidd died from congestion of lungs on 27 October 1898 in Oxford, Johnson County, Iowa, at age 64.4,1,2 She was buried in Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Johnson County, Iowa.4,2
Almira Tidd was also known as Elmira Tidd. Almira Tidd was also known as Alimira Teed. Her son's 1873 birth certificate gives her first name as "Almira". She and Hiram Janes III appeared on the census of 1860 in Northwest Township, Williams County, Ohio, which lists Hiram Janes (mis-indexed as "Jones"), 26, born in Pennsylvania; his wife Almira, 26, born in New York; and their three children, Charles, 7, born in Pennsylvania, Hannah E., 6, born in Michigan, and George, 3, born in Pennsylvania.5 She and Hiram Janes III appeared on the census of 1870 in Smithfield Township, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists Hiram Janes, 37, born in Pennsylvania; his wife Almira, 36, born in Pennsylvania [sic]; and their children, Charles, born in Wisconsin [sic] and Eliza [Hannah E.?], 16, born in Wisconsin [sic]. Apparently their son George, who was 3 years old in the 1860 census, must have died before 1870.6
