Biography
Jeremiah Campbell was born on 2 July 1810 in South Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont.

1 Jeremiah Campbell
Birth: Jul. 2, 1810
Grand Isle County, Vermont, USA
Death: Oct. 7, 1882
Sanborn, Niagara County, New York, USA
Jeremiah was the youngest of ten children born to William Jr. and Elizabeth (Hinds) Campbell. When Jeremiah was about seven, his family came to Niagara Co., New York and settled on a farm in Cambria. On 11 May 1836 he married Emily Marana Parker. They had three sons and adopted three daughters. Only one of the daughters lived to adulthood. The family lived in Cambria until 1866 when Jeremiah purchased a farm from the Spaulding family on Ridge Road, Lewiston. This farm became the home to five generations of the family until it was sold around 2005.
Jeremiah was found dead on a road near Sanborn, New York when he returning from a trip to Buffalo. Initially he and Emily were buried in Dickersonville Cemetery which was less than a mile from the Campbell farm. Jeremiah Campbell's grandson Erwin used to tell the story about Jeremiah's remains being transfered from Dickersonville Cemetery to North Ridge Cemetery. Apparently the Dickersonville Cemetery had fallen into disrepair and the family decided to move those Campbells buried there to North Ridge. Erwin likely arranged and financed this transfer. Erwin also wanted to move the Townsend part of the family as well but no other family members were willing to help with the costs and moving the Campbells had been very expensive.
Why was it more expensive than expected? A crane had to be hired to lift Jeremiah's casket as it was far heavier than could normally be moved. Upon lifting the casket from the grave, the casket was opened and Erwin told that Jeremiah had "turned to stone" - petrified!!!!!
I always wondered this was possible, but Erwin told this story many times and he wasn't one to tell "tall tales."
