SonWilliam Van Buren+ (b. 20 December 1932, d. 5 February 2017)

Biography

Alice Louise Nealy was born in July 1889 in Massachusetts according to the 1900 census. The 1910 census gives her age as 20, and the 1920 census gives her age as 29, which would make her born around 1890-91.1

Alice Louise Nealy married William Julius Van Buren, Jr., son of Wilhelm Von Buren II and Anna "Margaret" Scheideler, circa 1930.2

Alice Louise Nealy died on 2 July 1940 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, at age ~51. She apparently struck her leg in a accident at her home in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, rupturing a varicose vein which led to her death from shock due to hemorrhage the same day (2 July 1940) at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts. [Certificate of Death, Registered No. 1110, filed 8 July 1940] See also a 15 June 1999 letter from William Van Buren III.3,4 She was buried on 4 July 1940 in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. [Certificate of Death, Registered No. 1110, filed 8 July 1940].5
Alice Louise Nealy has also been reported to have been born circa 1897 Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Her son William Van Buren III's 1932 birth certificate states that his mother was then 35 years old and gives her place of birth as Springfield, Massachusetts. It gives her occupation as housewife. Her 1940 death certificate gives her age at death as 42 years and her place of birth as Springfield, Massachusetts. The 1931 census gives her age as 31 and born in Massachusetts. However, according to the 1900 census she was born in July 1889, and the 1910 census gives her age as 20, and the 1920 census gives her age as 29, which would make her born around 1890-91. It appears that she may have understated her age by about 10 years to her husband and family.

She appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of John J. Nealy and Mary Nealy in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lists John Nealy, 46, born December 1853 in Ireland; his wife Mary, 43, born December 1856 in Ireland; and their children (all born in Massachusetts) Anna J., 19, born January 1880; John A., 19, born November 1882; Minnie J., 16, born October 1883; Lizzie P., 14, born June 1885; and Alice S., 10, born July 1889. John had immigrated in 1870 and Mary had immigrated in 1871. They had been married 21 years (since about 1879). Mary had given birth to 5 children, all of whom were still living.1 Alice Louise Nealy was at school in 1900.1 She appeared on the census of 1910 in the household of John J. Nealy and Mary Nealy in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lists John J. Nealy, 60, born in Ireland, both parents also born in Ireland; his wife Mary J., 53, born in Ireland, both parents also born in Ireland; and their children (all born in Massachusetts), Annie T., 28, John A. (mis-indexed as Jona A.), 26, Minnie S., 25, Elizabeth C., 24, and Alice, 20. John immigrated in 1870, and Mary immigrated in 1880. They had been married for 30 years (since about 1879/80). Mary had given birth to 5 children, all of whom were still living.6 Alice Louise Nealy was a milliner in 1910.6 She appeared on the census of 1920 in the household of Mary Nealy in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lists Mary J. Nealy (mis-indexed as Kealy), 63, born in Ireland, both parents also born in Ireland, a widow; and her daughters (all born in Massachusetts) Anna G., 38, Minnie, 35, Elizabeth, 37, and Alice, 29.7 Alice Louise Nealy was a milliner in a garment shop in 1920.8 She was a gowns saleslady in 1930.

Alice Louise Van Buren and William Julius Van Buren, Jr., appeared on the census of 1930 in Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lists William J. [sic] Van Buren, 47, born in New York, father born in Swtizerland, mother born in New York; and his wife, Alice L., 31, born in Massachusetts, both parents born in Northern Ireland. Alice's was first married at age 31 (apparently in about 1929 or 1930), and no age is given for William's first marriage, possibly suggesting that he had been married before. They owned a house valued at $16,000 at 50 Warren Terrace.2 She and William Julius Van Buren, Jr., lived in 1934 in 50 Warren Terrace, Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts.9

Alice Nealy was the only one of six [actually 4, see 1910 census] sisters in her family to marry. She also had a brother named John Nealy. [15 November 1999 telephone call from William Van Buren III].
