ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

Robert Campbell was born in Campbeltown, Argyleshire, Scotland. Following his marriage, he removed to Tyrone, Ireland, where his first child, Charles was born in in 1698. A family bible tells that Robert Campbell and family came to America from Ireland in 1714, landed at Boston, and then moving to New London, Connecticut for eight years and then to Voluntown, Connecticut, in May, 1722 (Our Campbell Ancestors, page 133).

'Robert Campbell was born in Ulster, Ireland about 1673. In 1714, came with his family [to America] from County Tyrone, Province of Ulster, Ireland. His youngest son, Robert Campbell, writes "When I was five, my father and mother brought me with their family to Boston, New England, thence to New London, there lived 8 years. From thence we came to Voluntown, May, 1722."
Robert Campbell was among the earliest settlers of Voluntown , Connecticut, close to the Rhode Island Line. His six children were all born in Ireland, the first being married before coming to America. Robert Campbell's first wife was Janet [Stewart or Stuart???], of whom the first five children were born; the last, Robert, was son of the second wife, who died April 19, 1747, aged 76.' (footnote 1) There has been discussions on whether or not there was a second wife, with sources on both sides of the issue. Janet has been listed in all sources as the name of Robert's wife, with no name in any source listed for his second. Robert and his wife "Jonet" had communion on 17 May 1719, but whether this is Janet the first wife, or a different person is unknown. Also unknown is the birthplace of Robert, again with two major credible sources stating one in Ireland and the other Scotland. (Findagrave.com.)4,8

Robert was the son of Duncan Campbell and Mary McCoy, originally of Argylleshire, Scotland, then Ulster, Ireland. He was married to Janet Stewart/Stuart and they had six children, all born in Tyrone, Ireland. They were Charles, born about 1696 (married to Mary Stuart, born about 1678); John, born about 1698; Sarah, born about 1700; Mary, born about 1702; James, born about 1704; and Robert, born about 1706 or 1709. Robert and Janet and their children immigrated to Boston in 1714 with Rev. Samuel Dorrance, a Presbyterian Minister. While in Boston, they probably visited the Duncan and Susanne Campbell family, who were married in Boston in 1685 (Chldren: William born 1687, Archibald born 1689, Matthew born 1691, Susanne born 1696, and Agnes born 1699). The Bostonians would not sell land to the Immigrants, so they moved on to New London, CT, where Robert lived for 8 years, moving to Voluntown in May 1722 until his death.**

'Robert Campbell was born in Ulster, Ireland about 1673. In 1714, came with his family from County Tyrone, Province of Ulster, Ireland. His youngest son, Robert Campbell [born 1709], writes "When I was five [1714], my father and mother brought me with their family to Boston, New England, thence to New London, there lived 8 years [until 1722]. From thence we came to Voluntown, May, 1722.
Robert Campbell was among the earliest settlers of Voluntown , Connecticut, close to the Rhode Island Line. His six children were all born in Ireland, the first being married before coming to America. Robert Campbell's first wife was Janet, of whom the first five children were born; the last, Robert, was son of the second wife, who died April 19, 1747, aged 76.' (footnote 1) There has been discussions on whether or not there was a second wife, with sources on both sides of the issue.

    Children of Robert are:
    Charles 1696-1770
    John 1698-1775
    Sarah 1700-1729
    Mary 1702-1750
    James 1704-1773
    Robert 1709-1789

Recent research into the "Voluntown Campbells" have sourced the Y-Chromosome major Haplogroup to be R1a, which is of Norwegian in origin. This differs from the major Campbell group, which the Duke of Argyle is associated, which is R1b. The R1b is Saxon in origin. This differentiation is recognized by the "Clan Campbell of North America" as two distinct subgroups of the Campbell line. Research is ongoing and can be seen at the Clan Campbell Y-DNA research page of "Family Tree DNA"

Biography

James E. Barnes, Sr., was born on 9 March 1700 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America.2,1 He married Elizabeth Lorton on 29 December 1720 in Killingly-Putnam Congregational Church, Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut.3,4,1,5

James E. Barnes, Sr., died in 1771 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America, at age ~71.2 His estate was probated on 29 September 1772 The distribution of the assets of James [E.] BARNES were to his wife Elizabeth [Lorton] and his children: Nathaniel, James, Robert, Elizabeth COON, Sarah SUMNER and the heirs of Judith GLEAVDON, a deceased daughter . At the bottom of the page it says excepted September the 29 1772, James BARNS.6
Caveat: James E. Barnes, Sr. (1700-1771) of Killingham, CT, is not the same person as Janes Barnes (1700-1759) of New Haven, CT. There is evidently much confusion in this area.

There is apparently a detailed will of James [E.] BARNES h/o Elizabeth [Lorton] and with children mentioned: Nathaniel, James, Robert, Elizabeth COON, Sarah SUMNER and heirs of Judith GLEAVDON. At the bottom of the page it says executed September the 29 1772, James BARNS. Thus, the Sarah Barnes who was the daughter of James E. Barnes and Elizabeth Lorton married a Green Sumner, not William Campbell.

The town of Putnam [Connecticut] was incorporated in 1855. It was formed by taking parts of Thompson, Pomfret and Killingly. The old Congregational Church at North Killingly, organized in October 1715, thus came within its limits. Rev. J. Fisk was the first pastor. Rev. Aaron Brown married couples between Feb. 14, 1754 and Nov. 21, 1754. Rev. Nehemiah Barker married couples between Dec. 11, 1754 and Aug. 1799.
