MRS. VERNA HOUGHTON
Funeral services for Mrs. Verna Mae Oaks Houghton, 72, of 202 Long Drive. a Baytown resident eight years, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Paul U. Lee Chapel. Mrs. Houghton died at 9 a.m. Monday in a Baytown hospital. She was a native of Kaufman County, Tex. Survivors include six sons, Henry C. Houghton of Houston, Gordon Houghten of Morton, Tex., James C. Houghton Jr.. Ed- gar Weldon Houghton, Jack D. Houghton and Harold Zane Houghton of Baytown; four daughters, Mss. R. R. White and Miss Johnnye Houghton of Bay- town, Mrs. Badie Phillips of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mrs. Billy Pickett of Morton; and one brother, W. A. Oaks of Diboll. Tex. Aso surviving are 28 grand- children and 12 great-grandchildren.

The commanding officer of the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory was killed in a head-on automobile accident along the Gulf Beach Highway.
Capt. James O. Houghton, 45, had commanded the laboratory since June 1985, and was scheduled to leave his job July 1 to work at the Naval Medical Command in Washington, D.C. Capt. Houghton's car collided with another Thursday night near Pensacola.
"We're all in shock," said Lt. Cmdr. Tom Fleischman, the laboratory's director of program development. "He had to be about the best boss I ever worked for. He had a tendency to say that when he found talent, he got the hell out of people's way and let them work."
Capt. Houghton, born in Littlefield, Texas, was a graduate of Union College in Nebraska and earned his medical degree at Loma Linda University, Calif. He interned at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital in 1969 and was designated a naval flight surgeon the next year.
He served with the First and Third Marine Air Wings in Santa Ana, Calif., DaNang, Vietnam, and Futenma, Okinawa, and had been senior medical officer aboard the USS Oriskany and the USS Midway.
Capt. Houghton had conducted research in acceleration physiology at the Naval Air Development Center in Warminister, Pa. He also had worked as a special assistant for aerospace medicine at the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C.

Biography

Derl Houghton: James graduated from Loma Linda School of Medicine. James was a career Navy Officer. He was a medical doctor and flight surgeon (pilot) and dedicated to Aerospace medicine. He was in the NASA Astronaut program. He spent at least two tours in Viet Nam in MASH Units with the Marines. He was a Captain, USN. He was never married and dedicated his life to helping others. When he was The Commander of the Naval Hospitals where he was assigned, he would often work in the emergency rooms as needed or to help when manpower was less than desired. The was 6 months from retirement and coming home to open a private practice when he was killed in an auto accident by drunk teenagers. After a Philadelphia Naval Hospital intership, he was designated a naval flight surgeon in 1970.
As a naval flight surgeon, he served with the First and Third Marine Air Wings in Santa Ana, Calif., DaNang, Vietnam, and Futenma, Okinawa, and he had been senior medical officer aboard the USS Oriskany and the USS Midway.²

ROTAN — Anna Lou Houghton, 90, a lifetime Fisher County resident, died Sunday at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev James Brigham officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Houghton was born in Royston and lived in the Royston MeCaulley area all her life. She was a member of McCaulley Baptist Church. She married Frank Houghton in 1928 in McCaulley; he proceded her in death
Survivors include one daughter, Jeannine Robertson of McCaulley; three sisters, Willie Sumerlin of Snyder, Rosa Young of Littlefield and Irene Clark of Rotan; five brothers, Paul Gruben of Lovington, N.M., John , Gruben of Rotan, Ernest Gruben of Kermit, Troy Gruben of Sylvester and David Gruben of Roby; two grandsons, eight great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Association of West Texas.

Joe Willis Houghton, 54, passed away on September 11, 2000. He was born in Sinton, Texas on November 22, 1945. He was a life long resident of the Aransas Pass area. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart Medal National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star and Army Commendation Medal. He was also a member of the VFW in Aransas Pass, Texas.
He is survived by two sons, Joel Houghton of Fort Worth, Texas and Jason Houghton of Corpus Christi, Texas. He will be deeply missed by both.
