Betty J. Houghton Bonita Springs, FL

Houghten, Betty J. died at home on February 19, 2015, she was 91 years old. She was a lifelong resident of Rochester, MI and more recently a resident of Hunters Ridge Country Club in Bonita Springs, FL, where she enjoyed wintering for many years.

Betty was born to Wellington and Pauline Ostrom on April 19, 1923 in Rochester, and is the sister of Dorthy Ferguson and the late Donald Ostrom. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1941 and began secretarial work at Twist Drill. She married her enduring love, the late Fred D. Houghten in August of 1942 at St. Pauls Methodist Church where she was a member. Betty and Fred had 65 memorable years together raising their four children, Virginia (Rev. Thomas) Crichton, the late Carolyn Houghten Nowak, Robert Houghten, and Kenneth (Dawn) Houghten. Her love extended to ten grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Betty's life was immersed in her family.

Her endeavors to serve in the Rochester community included membership in The National Farm and Garden Club, Village Women's Club, Rochester Auxiliary of Crittenton Hospital, and Oakland University Presidents Club. In addition she enjoyed traveling with her family and friends, cooking, golf, music and flower arranging. She will be remembered as a graceful hostess and prolific organizer, a woman of detail, dignity and sensitivity to the needs of others. Betty's family and friends are the recipients of her untiring love and devotion to them throughout her life until the day she departed this world.

A memorial service is set for 11:00 a.m., February 24th, 2015 at Joanne's House at Hope Hospice located at 27200 Imperial Parkway, Bonita Springs, FL, with a lunch reception to follow.

A Celebration of Life will honor Betty's journey on earth at 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 28, 2015 at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Dr., Rochester, Michigan, with a lunch reception to follow.

A private burial will take place at Mt. Avon Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday February 27, 2015 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Betty is so loved by her family she will be forever in our hearts, and her indelible influence will live on in her children and grandchildren. She lived a wonderful and fruitful life. She now resides in her eternal residence with her savior Jesus Christ who loved her and gave his life for her redemption.

Memorial contributions may be made to Baptist Mid-Missions for the Missionary work of Kenneth Houghten in Great Britain, or to a breast cancer research organization of your choice.
