ObituaryJun 9, 2004RUFUS WHEELWRIGHT CLARK ’34

Rufe Clark, who retired in 1977 from the engineering staff of the California State Lands Division after a career in “Big Oil,” as he called it, died Dec. 23, 2003.

“My claim to fame,” he once wrote a classmate,” is national records (in US Masters Swimming) in the 200-meter breaststroke in 1976 and 1977, and runner-up in 1978.” He took up swimming “when a foot went bad,” and he recommended “this pastime for those interested in physical well-being and hard work.”

Rufe was married in 1940 to Elise Houghton, who predeceased him. The couple had three children, Susan, Rufus, and Katherine, and they lived for many years “on our small parcel in La Habra Heights [Calif.].” Since 2000 Rufe lived in Wauna, Wash., “a spot that consists of a post office, firehouse, gas station, and market” in an area “rapidly becoming populated by out-of-state refugees seeking greener pastures.”

BiographyJul 24, 2011NJ, USA, A self taught nature and wildlife photographer, Herb Houghton spent most of his life in New Jersey, traveling up and down the east coast from Maine to Florida. He has also explored and photographed fish and game in various venues throughout Mexico. Having been a bird lover since childhood, Herb has more recently concentrated in avian photography, capturing amazing images of birds in flight and on the hunt, from hummingbirds to the great bald eagles now re-populating the Garden State. Herb also enjoys all wildlife and landscape photography, sometimes dabbling in macro photography of insects, dragonflies, and flowers.

Photographer records lives of the birds of North Jersey

The Record

Herb Houghton is an electrician by trade. But when his herniated discs blew out again a few years ago and he faced 10 tediously idle months recovering from surgery, he began an unusual new career — bird photography.
Houghton's photograph of a snowy owl, below, was taken at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.
Houghton's photograph of a snowy owl, below, was taken at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.

He started with an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera to capture the birds in his back yard. Just five years later, Houghton, who still runs his own electrical company, has an emerging reputation as a go-to photographer for artful shots of birds in flight. A photo he took of a northern flicker will grace the autumn cover of New Jersey Audubon magazine — his third cover shot in two years.

"I loved his work as soon as I saw it," said Mimi Sabatino, the Flyway Gallery curator.

Many of Houghton's photos have been taken at the Palisades, in the Meadowlands and at the Celery Farm in Allendale, but he has photographed birds from Mexico to Maine.

The Lyndhurst exhibition includes pictures of bald eagles snatching fish from the water and black skimmers in search of prey. There are also butterflies, minks and black bears.

"Herb has a very good eye for composition, and his photos truly are gorgeous," said Joan R. Snider, the graphic designer for New Jersey Audubon magazine.

"It takes patience to be a great photographer, and Herb has a lot of that," Snider said. "He's able to wait and not intrude on the bird. He has gone from a hobbyist to a professional in a very short time."

Houghton's favorites are birds of prey — hawks, eagles and owls. "They're up at the top of the food chain, and you can really get a sense of how they interact and feed," he said.

"Spending so much time watching them, you start understanding them," he said. "Eagles are slow to wake in the morning. Then they go fishing, and if one makes a catch, the others will chase the bird with the fish."

Houghton grew up in Franklin Lakes, the youngest of five children who often played in the woods and fished. His older sister, Katherine Houghton, a Paramus lawyer, remembers him coming home covered with bee stings. Houghton attended Indian Hills High School in Oakland then moved to Maryland with a relative and learned the electrician's trade. He moved back to North Jersey in the late 1980s.

His wish list includes shooting kites and roseate spoonbills in Florida, vermillion flycatchers in southwestern Texas and great gray owls in Canada.

In summer, Houghton, 47, carries plenty of insect repellant. In winter, he parks his truck with the sun behind him and sits in the cab occasionally to warm up. He wears earth tones when shooting, and recently bought brown shoes because he worried his white sneakers would scare birds away.

He has an iPod app called iBird Explorer, which plays birdcalls.

"I might play the call of the kingfisher, and the next thing you know, a kingfisher will be buzzing by my head. But I use it sparingly — you have to be careful and not get them confused thinking there's a nesting bird nearby," he said.

He likes shooting between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. or 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. because of the beautiful light at those times of day.

Though incredibly chatty in person, Houghton is perfectly content to spend eight or nine hours alone, huddled among the bushes, waiting for the perfect shot.

"I don't mind being by myself," Houghton said. "That's when I get my best shots. A lot of it is stealth. And patience is huge. A lot of people might set up to shoot for a half hour, an hour, see nothing, say 'This stinks,' and leave. The second hour is when that osprey might have come by and pulled a fish out of the water."

Quiet, I'm working

Occasionally, he is frustrated with birders who are less careful about making noise.

"I'll be set up for an hour or two waiting quietly, and some birders will come along talking, saying, 'Hey Charlie, how was your birding trip to Peru? or something, and I'm like, 'You just scared away the herons!' " Houghton said, laughing.

His admirers say Houghton doesn't merely get portraits of birds, he gets action shots of them living their lives — attacking a fish, feeding their young, dueling in midflight. His striking images include a puffin munching on tiny krill and an egret with a small crab dangling from its beak.

"There's a whole realm of the animal kingdom that most people miss, but thanks to photographers like Herb we can appreciate those moments," Snider, of New Jersey Audubon magazine, said. "Herb doesn't just capture a bird's image — he captures its soul."2
