Services will be held today for Warren B. Houghton, a longtime Antelope Valley College professor who designed the college's mining technology program, one of only two such programs in the state.

Houghton died of cancer Sunday at his Lancaster home. He was 63.

"He was one of those individuals who was popular not just with his colleagues, but also with his students and the community," said Dr. Allan Kurki, president of the college. "He always did things above and beyond what was required by his position at school - he'd take civic groups on field trips out around the valley and do work for the city on ecological and environmental issues.

Houghton, a graduate of the University of Utah and the University of California, Davis, began teaching at Antelope Valley College in 1960.

Services will be at noon today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, in Lancaster.

78 INDICTED BY U.S. BRAND JURY 9 Defendants Are From Minneapolis; 16 Bills Kept Secret
Nine Minneapolis persons were included among 78 defendants named in 49 indictments returned by a federal grand jury in St. Paul. Most of the indictments charged illicit liquor traffic.
Sixteen of the indictments, naming 36 defendants, were secret. Identities will he withheld until those indicted are arrested.
Among Minneapolis defendants is Herman R. Dixon, 2205 Fifth avenue S., former WPA timekeeper, charged with forging and uttering government checks. Dixon confessed retaining persons on the payroll after they stopped working and 31 checks totaling $1,000 were obtained, agents said.
