BiographyTheresa Zephrena "Rena" Gravelle was born in Rama Twp., Ontario North, ONT while her family had relocated from Rochester, Monroe, NY in order to be near her mother’s relatives. RENA was baptised when she was about two weeks old at St. Columkill's Church in Uptergrove, Ontario where the witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Martin McDonnell. 2 years and 6 months after RENA was born, the family moved back to Rochester. RENA attended Sacred Heart Parochial School in Rochester; S. S. #2 in Rama Twp., Ont for two years while she lived with her Uncle Jack and Aunt Maggie McDonnell. „h RENA graduated from Kodak High School in Rochester (Class of 1925). She then worked at
Eastman Kodak for two years as a bookkeeper. RENA started at the Park Avenue Hospital Nursing School in Rochester in 1929 and was at the head of her class (1931) . She received her New York State Nursing License on August 8, 1932. „h RENA married Harry D. Clements, a radio technician, on May 1, 1932, (license #66495). In 1935 they lived at 1090 Culver Road. This marriage was annulled because of his violence and abuse. RENA did general and private duty nursing for a while, and then went into public health from
April 17, 1939 until January, 1944. She was stationed in the Rochester (Hamlin) and Albany areas before spending a semester at Syracuse University. RENA spent five years in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and St. Lawrence Counties (Massena). RENA met MILTON while she was stationed in Hamlin. After his divorce from Eva Wells,
RENA and MILTON married at the home of Rev. William Halleck in Rochester. The marriage was witnessed by Wesley Muhlbeyer and Helen Gravelle, RENA’s sister. After their marriage, RENA and MILTON bought a substantial two-story home at 39 „h Jamestown Street, Randolph, Cattaraugus, NY. (Lot # 24, Town 2, Range 9 or the Holland
Land Company survey). Settlers started coming to the Randolph area about 1820. Randolph was formed from Conewango in 1826, and the lot on which the house stands was first developed in 1836. It predates the incorporation of the Village of Randolph, which occurred on May 21, 1867. They also bought a vacation "camp" in Hotchkiss Hollow, outside Randolph. RENA did not want to put her own home in Randolph, in jeopardy, due to debts of extended family members, so the complete title to 39 Jamestown Street was transferred to MILTON’s name only two years later. Although RENA had been raised Catholic, she decided to leave the church for reasons relating to her marriage to Milton, who had been divorced. She joined the Episcopal church in 1951. In 1951, when MILTON was ill, RENA considered going back to work, and pursued getting letters of reference from the NYS Health Department, her previous employer. She activated a nursing license in the State of Florida in 1952, and reactivated her NYS Nursing License in 1953. RENA and MILTON enjoyed going to Florida every year, and especially liked an oceanside mobile home resort named Briny Breezes near Delray Beach, FL. Eventually, when the
property was turned into a user-owned corporation, they bought 27 shares and had a two bedroom mobile home put on their lot. In 1955, RENA and MILTON bought land on the Conewango Rd. in Randolph from her sister, Helen Gravelle Thrasher and husband. At one time, they planned to build a more modern house there, although this never happened and the land was sold in her late life. RENA was MILTON’s medical office manager until 1959, when she went back to public health nursing in Chautauqua County, NY. She worked and went to night school for four years, and then received a stipend to complete her B. S. at Syracuse in 1963. RENA became Assistant Director of Nurses of the Chautauqua County Health Dept. in 1964 and the Director in 1965. In 1965 RENA and MILTON began building a more permanent home at Canterbury Drive, Chautauqua, NY in the Chautauqua Shores subdivision. She moved to Canterbury Drive, Chatauqua, NY at that time. „h RENA left the Chautauqua area in 1971 and became Director of Nurses in Cattaraugus County. She retired in 1973, and sold the Chautauqua home at that time. After her retirement, RENA moved to California, first to 38580 McDole Terrace, Fremont, and then she moved in with Gail and family at 21 West Park Court, Walnut Creek in 1976. She cared for her grandchildren while Gail worked, and took several classes. In 1979, she spent several months in a program abroad at Ealing College, near London, ENG. In 1981 she went on a guided trip to the Holy Land. „h In her elder years, RENA had three heart attacks, and uterine cancer. RENA purchased a small home on Maple Drive in Randolph for summer vacations. She was on vacation when she suffered a medical event that hospitalized her. It was diagnosed that she had terminal kidney cancer. She returned to California and died ten days later. RENA is buried in Randolph Cemetery, next to MILTON.
