ObituaryDec 23, 1989George M. Houghton, a World War II veteran and 50-year Paradise resident, died Monday at a local hospital. He was 88. Memorial services were held yesterday at the Table Mountain Masonic Lodge in Paradise, which officiated the ceremony. Mr. Houghton was born in Providence, R.I. on July 25, 1901, and worked for 8-1/2 years as a correc- tional officer at Folsom Prison.
He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. In 1949, Mr. Houghton moved to Paradise from Los Angeles. A 55-year member of the Table Mountain Lodge #124 F&AM of Paradise, he was also a life member of both the VFW Post #2039 in Para- dise and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #106 of Paradise. Mr. Houghton was also a char- ter member of the Paradise Gem & Mineral Club and the Paradise Museum Association, and belonged to the Order of the Eastem Star Chapter #549 of Paradise. He was also a former member of the Paradise Citizens Council. Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife of three years, Mary, of Paradise. Private inumment will take place at a later date in Paradise Cemetery beside his late wife, Ruth E. Houghton.

My name is Jan Houghton Tuttle. My dad, Harold Eugene Houghton died in 1957. I know little if anything about him. He was a commercial artist, worked for Paramount Studios, and was a Naval officer. I was 5 when he died. His dad's name was Eli Kelsey Houghton.

Harold (Hal) Eugene Houghton was born on 18 January 1901 in Ucon, Bonneville County, Idaho, United States. Hal later changed his date of birth to 18 January 1908.
There is therefore conflicting evidence as to his birth date - the 1901 date matches his draft card, the 1910 and 1940 Federal Census and the date of his first marriage. Unfortunately his Social Security data has the date as 18 January 1908.
The 1910 Census had him living with his family and he is aged 9 years (date of birth 1901) After graduating from High School he completed the 1st year of College.

He was trained as a Commercial Artist and in 1940 he had his own studio. He mainly worked in the film industry.

Hal had his first experience in the Film industry in 1910 at the age of 9, when he obtained a role as an extra in some mob scenes in one of the Tom Mix movies (a silent movie).
After leaving school and completing one year at College he joined Paramount Films. He stayed with Paramount for his career, except for a short period when he served in the US Navy during the war. After the war he was the Publicity Officer for Paramount International Films in Sydney, Australia. Between 1949 and 1952 his role took him from Australia, to the US and to France

Hal married Minnie Vahl Alderman on 19 March 1922 in Los Angeles, California, USA Hal was 21 years old (or 14 if born in 1908) and Minnie as 20 years old.
Hal and Minnie had one son Eugene Troy. After the marriage they settled in Los Angeles, California at 5669 Saturn Street. The 1940 Census still has him at this address and has his age as 39 years (Birth date is 1901) The family remained here into the 1940s and remained here while Hal was away in the war.

Hal registered for the draft on 14 February 1942 and gave his birthday as 18 January 1901. Hal joined the US Navy in 1942 and served in the Navy for 5-6 years.
After training he flew to Hawaii and in March 1942 he joined the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington in Pearl Harbour. The Lexington sailed on 15 April and joined Task Force 17 which sailed to the Coral Sea off North east Australia. Task Force 17 engaged a Japanese Task Force and fought the first carrier to carrier battle. During the battle the Lexington was badly damaged and had to be abandoned. To avoid he being captured by the Japanese the carrier was sunk by the destroyer USS Phelps, with 5 torpedoes,
He was made a Lieutenant Commander and served in the Pacific for the rest of the war and he spent time in Australia.
While in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia he met an Australian girl Jessie Johnston at a function at Double Bay in East Sydney. Hal returned to the US in around 1946 to leave the Navy and while there he obtained a divorce from Minnie. He then returned to Australia in September 1947.

While Hal was in the US, Jessie had also obtained a divorce from her husband. On his return he announced in a newspaper that he intended to marry Miss Jessie Johnston and become an Australian citizen. This change of citizenship never occurred. Hal married Jessie Gertrude Johnston in late 1947 at Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales.
Hal was 46 years old and Jessie was 31 years old. About a year after the marriage they had their first child - Jon Douglas, who was born in Australia.
Initially Jessie did not want to travel and Hal continued to travel around the world with his job, while Jessie stayed in Sydney. Eventually Hal convinced her to travel and they went to the USA and Paris in France. They eventually settles in Los Angeles, California
Hal's Social Security number was 553208619. This number was issued in 1952 in California. It is here that his birthday is now recorded as 18 January 1908.
Harold died on 16 May 1957 in Los Angeles, California. Hal was buried in May 1957 in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in San Fernando, Los Angeles, California.
