Mrs. Llta Murrieta Houghton, 63. of 5719 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys, died yesterday at her home after a prolonged illness. She was the daughter of the late Juan Murieta, San Diego County pioneer and former Los Angeles County Sheriff. Her late husband. Sherman Otis Houghton, was a pioneer San Fernando Valley rancher. Mrs. Houghton was born in Temecula, San Diego County. She leaves one son, John Murrieta, Sherman Oaks; two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Ann Newkirk and Miss Patricia Houghton, both of Van Nuys; and a brother. Henry L. Murrieta, La Habra.

Friends and family today will celebrate the life of Lowell Norman Houghton, founder and owner of Merry Oldsmobile in San Jose for 20 years.

Mr. Houghton suffered a heart attack at his Fresno home Nov. 9 and died en route to a hospital. He was 74 and had moved from San Jose only three months ago.

Mr. Houghton was one of the last to open a Big Three automobile dealership in downtown San Jose and one of the last to leave. His agency on South Market Street, established in 1971, moved to the auto row on Capitol Expressway in 1985.

It was a matter of high economics, he said in the late '80s. ''Today I think it's safe to say it costs a minimum of $2 million in capital to get in.''

In 1953, Mr. Houghton had financed a Buick dealership in Davis - his first - with a $2,500 bank loan on his house.

It cost him $3,000 a month in 1988 just to train and update his 63 employees, he said.

Mr. Houghton started selling cars in his native Sacramento when he was still in high school. He continued that vocation while attending community college for two years and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces before World War II began, serving as an aviator on a bomber crew in the Pacific for the duration.

After the war, Mr. Houghton worked for Sacramento auto dealer Glen Phillips before forming a partnership with Phillips and establishing Merry Olds. Mr. Houghton bought out Phillips in 1973 shortly before Phillips' death.

Mr. Houghton and his second wife, Oretha, were married for 18 years.

After selling the dealership in 1991, the couple formed a mortgage and real estate company, Houghton Financial, said Mrs. Houghton's son-in-law, Paul Gilbreath.

The Houghtons had lived in Almaden Valley and in Palm Springs, and Lowell Houghton belonged to several golf clubs, including San Joaquin, Pasatiempo and Almaden country clubs.

Genealogy was a mission for Betty. She made charts and graphs and family trees and all by hand because she didn't have a wide-carriage typewriter. If her kids ever had a family history project in school, they would have been set.

Lydia ''Betty'' Houghton, who died in Rossmoor on Monday at the age of 88, was born in Provo, Utah, but graduated from Long Beach Poly High School. She was Betty Hasler then.

She went to the California College of Commerce and had several secretarial jobs before marrying Leo Houghton, a Long Beach high school chemistry and biology teacher for 32 years.

She met Leo while living in Compton and acting as drama director for the Mormon church there. He was a UCLA student and because of studies, his attendance at church was spotty at best. Betty was desperate for just the right young man to play the lead in a play she'd written. Someone suggested Leo Houghton, but he hadn't been showing up for meetings.

Just then, who should appear in the doorway but Leo Houghton. Betty recruited him for the play and for life. They were married in 1940.

She was a strict mom - a fact for which her children thank her now and an active member of her church and her political party. For church, she became a popular public speaker, talking about missionary work and teaching the young people.

For the Republican party, she worked at both the state and national level. On their 40th wedding anniversary, Leo asked Betty what she would like as a gift. She said she'd like a flagpole. And the Stars and Stripes have been flying in front of their house ever since.

She wasn't an astounding cook, and didn't spend much time ambushing dust bunnies, but she was meticulous about her extensive genealogical and religious research. More than 400 books line her bookshelves, with underlinings and marginal notes in every one of them.

She is survived by her husband, Leo; sons, Dennis and David; daughter, Lenore Sharatata; 11 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4142 Cerritos Ave., Los Alamitos.
