ObituaryMay 31, 2018William "Bill" Ralph Houghton, 82, passed away on May 25, 2018, at Autumn Leaves Assisted Living Memory Care Home in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Darlene (Wenman) Houghton. They shared 60 years of marriage together. Born in Kenosha, Wis., Bill was the son of Dr. Ralph Houghton and Jennie (Wilhelmy) Houghton. He attended and graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wis. He was employed by American Motors Corporation, followed by Chrysler Motors and worked as an electrician until the age of 50. He then retired and moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he had served in the U.S. Army as a young man.

Bill had a passion for fixing anything and everything, but his greatest accomplishments involved repairing and repainting automobiles both as a hobby and as service for numerous patrons. Upon moving to Texas, Bill fulfilled his dream of constructing their new home and even built a covered bridge to cross when entering the property that was featured on KENS 5 News. He also enjoyed gardening and landscaping his 2 acres of land in Texas. His many pets held a very special place in his heart. Bill worked endlessly to support his wife, Betty, and their large family of six children. He will be remembered by many as a family man whose talents were in the areas of art and invention. Bill's work ethic is difficult to match. In his words, "Do the job right, or don't do it at all!"

He is survived by his wife, Betty, and five of his children: Laurie (Kevin) Brothers, Sandee (Mark) Gardinier, Sue (Chris) Tenuta, Gina (Patrick) Ware, and Mike (Casey) Houghton, and eleven grandchildren: Matt and Lindsey Brothers, Ryan and Brett Gardinier, Alan Houghton, Dan and Nick Tenuta, Brennan (Reagan) and Jenna Ware, and Charlie and Adi Houghton, and great-granddaughters: Scarlett and Athena Ware. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Ralph and Jennie Houghton, his brothers, Robert and Thomas Houghton, his sister, Mary Lou (Reis) Houghton, and his son, Robert Alan Houghton.

There will be a private memorial service in San Antonio, Texas for Bill's family. Bill's family would like to thank all of the employees at Autumn Leaves and Encompass Hospice for the kindness and compassion they exemplified through their caregiving in these last difficult months. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at: Alzheimer's Association / P.O. Box 96011 / Washington, D.C. / 20090-6011, online at https://act.alz.org, or by phone, call 800-272-3900. Bill would also be honored by any donations made to the Humane Society. ObituaryAug 31, 2014Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Co., CA, USA, Arlette Carol Houghton (11/11/30 - 8/15/14)

On August 15, 2014 a bright light went out, at least on earth. Since then the world has not been the same for her family and friends who miss her very much, already.

Arlette, a long-time resident of SB, passed peacefully in her home after a long battle with MDS/Leukemia. Born in Chicago, as Arlette Carol Duykers (then, Favell), she eventually relocated to San Bernardino where she met and married her high-school sweetheart, Rodney E. Houghton, a fellow "Aggie," who was her passion for 46 years, until his passing.

Arlette will be remembered as a big-hearted "character" who took a deep interest in people. She enjoyed volunteering for sick children and others less fortunate. She could be described as hard-working, imaginative and creative, intelligent, strong, energetic, and loyal to those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Arlette faithfully served as an Air Force wife on more than ten assignments spanning 22 years, from the U.S. to Morocco, Spain, Hawaii, and the Philippines. At each relocation, she quickly met the challenge to establish a home and a life for the family, making many friends along the way (at one point her Christmas card list was over 300 people!).

Arlette enjoyed living in Santa Barbara, where she had a reputation as a private swim instructor, influencing students from 6 months to adult. Many went on to succeed at local and NCAA swimming events. She was also an avid reader, conversationalist, guitar player, and gardener.

Arlette was the committed wife of Ret. Lt. Col. Rodney E. Houghton, loving Mother to son Christopher Briggs Houghton of south Florida, and daughter Shawn Houghton, of Santa Barbara/SF Bay Area (now living in France). She is also survived by Bruce Duykers, Norma Duykers and family, and Mrs. Warren (Joey) Houghton and family. Arlette adored the nursing staff at Cottage Hospital, and her caregiver, Kitty, to whom the family is grateful for their love and attention.

A family ceremony will be held at the S.B. Cemetery's Urn Garden on September 20 followed by a gathering for those wishing to attend. Please contact Shawn for details: shhought@gmail.com. Arlette generously supported the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and has requested, in lieu of flowers, that others consider a donation as well (Please contact Stacy Ale at stacya@pva.org, or visit www.pva.org ).

Her family would like to wish all who knew her peace and comfort at this time. Let us share in the joy of her homecoming--She is finally free, and most likely singing and dancing with the angels! (p.s. Hope you liked it, Mom!)
