Obituary

Donald Eugene Houghton: At his request, no services will be conducted for Donald Eugene Houghton, 67, a retired professor of English at California State University, Sacramento, who died Tuesday from Shy-Drager syndrome.
Mr. Houghton taught English at the college from 1955 until retiring in I982 lie served as English department chairman from 1964 to 1967 and was awarded two Fulbright Scholarships to the University of Egypt, in 1962 and the University of Guyana In 1976. The South Dakota native was raised in Washington. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Washington, his master’s degree in English from Columbia University and his doctorate in American studies from the University of Minnesota. He served as a cryptographer for the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Houghton is survived by wife of 46 years, Maxine; sons, R and Vance, both of Sacramento, daughter, Heather Girard of Montana; sisters, Vivian Brock of Washington, Kathyrn Sindles of Michigan and Juanita Faster of Canada; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Deceased Name: Melvin T. Houghton
Final rites and burial services for Melvin T. Houghton of Bellingham will be held in Yuma, Arizona this week. Mr. Houghton died on Friday, July 20, 2001 at age 77. A native of Howard, Kansas, Melvin was educated in the Butler County, Kansas Public Schools and enlisted in the U.S.Army at the start of World War II. He was sent immediately overseas where he served in the African campaign, then in the Italian offensive as a driver in the Army's forward mechanized units. Following the Allied victory in Europe, Melvin was assigned to the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Following his military discharge he returned home to Kansas where he completed technical training in Kansas City in automotive repairs. He married his school friend, Chloe Trowbridge of Rosalia, Kansas. They had three children. The couple moved to Yuma, Arizona in the mid-sixties, where Melvin spent some 20 years as a tank test driver in the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground. After the death of his first wife in Yuma, Melvin married an old Kansas school friend, Phyllis Taliaferro of Bellingham. Among the survivors, aside from Phyllis Houghton, are three children, Gary Houghton, Carol Brooks and Karen Stamp, all of the Yuma area. Also, Donna Trecker of Bellingham, Dorothy Scalzitti of Stanwood, and Dale Taliaferro of Winnemucca, Nevada. Local arrangements by
