Just one week ago I wrote the Reformed Church at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY (enclosing a small donation and an SASE) and asked if they had any information on this couple other than the record of their marriage on 31 October 1819. In today's mail I received a photocopy of the page from the church's marriage register containing the marriage of William Rensley and Sally Ward and a nice letter from the church administrator saying she was unable to locate any further information regarding this couple. She said she also checked her book "Old Gravestones of Dutchess County, New York" and did not find either name. There were 32 marriages recorded on that page dating from December 1817 through August 1820. Needless to say, I checked every name to see if there might be any clues there, but unfortunately found none. Just wanted to let you all know that I received a reply from this church in one week's time, which I think is great. Now I have to find somewhere else to look.

William Ranslow, Jr., appeared on the census of 1860 in Eureka Township, Nevada County, California,

Subject: W. Renslow, 1860 U.S. Census
Date: Thu, 11 May 2000
From: Larry Renslow

Extracted from 1860 U.S. Census, population schedule, NARA Microfilm Series M653, Roll 61, p. 370 (ink); Dwelling-house #2802. Seen at National Archives and Record Administration, Pacific Sierra Region, 1000 Commodore Drive, San Bruno, California 94066, (650) 876-9009.

Enumeration date 8 August 1860. California. Nevada County. Eureka Township. Moores Flat Post Office.

W. Renslow; age 61; male; white; B.Smith; born in NY.

Notes:
1. Three miners also living in residence, names not taken.
2. A scan of the several pages before and after p. 370 revealed that most residents of the area were men in their 20's and 30's. Women, children, and old men were rare. Almost all the men were miners.
3. "B.Smith" is the man's occupation, apparently blacksmith.
4. Possible identification: William Renslow (1786-?), the same man who married Sarah English, among others.

A little further discussion on the possible identification of W. Renslow as William Renslow (1786-?). William's location is unknown after 1850. A lot of men were heading west about that time, going to the California gold fields; William could have been among them.

The apparent discrepancies are easily explained away.

About the age:
1. There's no telling who actually gave the information to the enumerator. If it was anyone other than William himself, it was probably someone who didn't know him as well as a family member or a long-time friend would have.
2. William would have been an unusually old guy in the gold fields. One thing I learned about living among large numbers of young men (Marines) was that it isn't good to let on that you have a weakness. It isn't just that the other guys will make fun of you, which they will--in that kind of environment, someone will take advantage of your weakness. If you look like a push-over, someone will come along and take whatever you have that they want. So, I believe that it would be entirely natural that an old guy in the gold fields would be doing whatever he could to appear younger and stronger.

About the birthplace: If W. Renslow was William (1786-?), he spent many years in New York and raised his family in New York, it would've been quite natural to him to describe himself as being "from" New York. Whoever gave the information to the enumerator may have known no more about him than that.

In spite of my arguments, I don't feel that the evidence is strong enough to assume this census data belongs to the William (1786-?) person.

    1. The 45 and over male and female would be William and Bathsheba Ranslow. The age indicates both would have been born on or before 6 August 1765.
    2. The 16-25 male could be either the younger William or Kelly Ranslow. It's more likely to be Kelly, as William was probably out of the parents' home as of 1804 and his marriage to Nancy Benson. The age range 16-25 indicates a birth date between 7 August 1784 and 6 August 1794.
    3. The under 10 male is likely to be George, who would've been age nine.
    4. The under 10 female is unknown.

3. The male and the female in the 30-39 age group would be accounted for by Philo and his wife, Almira (Stockwell).
4. I can't identify the male in the 15-19 age group. It could be Eleazer, a son of Philo's older brother, Kelly. It could be a younger brother of Philo that I don't know about (as far as I know, Philo was the youngest in his family.). It could be a relative of Almira. Or, it could be someone who is not family, such as a boarder.
