Charlotte wrote: Where did he [William Henry Renslow] come from? Thinking back, he must have been the son of Kelly Renslow and Sarah Beard who was born in Pennsylvania, not New York. The 1855 census did say William Renslow was born in Pennsylvania. The 1870 & 1875 censuses both give New York as William's birth state.

The Richard Beard family, including Sarah, is not in 1840, 1845, or 1850 census in Yates County, and I don't know where they were during that time. Or Kelly--don't know where he was.

Caroline Maria Ellis will (22 June 1876), Yates County Surrogate Court Records, Box 24 Packet C, Frances Dumas, 110 Court Street, Penn Yan, New York 14527, 315/536-5147 or 315/536-5170.

In the Petition to the Surrogate Court accompanying this will, all of Caroline's sisters are named. Only one is a Renslow: Sarah [Spears?] Renslow of Danville, Iowa. Caroline's estate goes to her nephew: "After paying all just demands against me as my estate, I give and bequeath the residue of my estate to my Nephew, William Renslow and his wife Sarah Renslow."

Notes.
1. There is a William Renslow, age 14, in the 1855 New York State Census living with his grandfather, Richard Beard, in Starkey, Yates County.
2. Kelly Renslow married Sarah (possibly Beard), and appears with her in the 1860 US Census in Starkey, Yates County. The William in note 1 may be the son of this couple, and also may be the William who inherited Caroline's estate. This is the easiest way with my available data to account for a William Renslow in Yates County in 1876 with a mother named Sarah and a wife named Sarah.
3. This of course means that Charlotte was right all along. 8-.)

Note: His death certificate says that he was born in Michigan, but the1900 & 1910 censuses say that he was born in Wisconsin, which seems more likely. Rhonda Pascoe's e-mail message says that he was born in Siegle, Wisconsin, but I cannot find that town.^1,2 He married Ruby Anne Hazell on 15 August 1920 in Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota.¹ He died of heart failure on 11 March 1982 in Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Vallejo, Solano County, California, at age 87.

4. Elmira is Alice Almira Renslow, Bert's first cousin.
5. Plainly, Bert & family live in the City of Denver, so why he gets a
farm number, I don't know.
6. The parents of both Bert and Elmira were listed as born in Illinois. All four of the parents were born in New York. We know that, and I'd bet that Bert and Elmira knew it, too, so who gave the information to the enumerator? My money's on Esther. Esther as informant might also explain why her sister got demoted to "step daughter."

Bert Renslow and Almira Alice (Mira) Renslow appeared on the census of 1930 in Fort Lupton, Weld County, Colorado, which lists Bert Renslow, 57, llinois, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in New York; and his wife Alimira, 58, born in Illinois, father born in New York, mother born in Pennsylvania.⁴ He was a laborer, doing odd jobs in 1930.⁴

      4. It's sometimes fascinating to look at the data and wonder who gave the information to the enumerator. Someone knew that Horace's family was from New York and Vermont, but otherwise couldn't get his parents' birthplaces right. Mary's parents from Pennsylvania? Probably that's the mysterious Renslow connection to Pennsylvania again, rather than Mary's family. This is the only record I know of that shows Nathan's name as "Nathaniel." Our unnamed informant knew that Horace and Mary were "from" Illinois, and thought they had been born there. A neighbor, maybe? I'd bet that the enumerator got all the local gossip, too.

3. In the 1910 census, Bertha was Bertha Renslow, a daughter of
Bert. She's listed as married in 1920, so that explains the surname
Bates. I can't explain the "step daughter" listing. The word "step" was actually written outside the relationship column, apparently added after the column had been filled with the word "daughter."
4. Elmira is Alice Almira Renslow, Bert's first cousin.
5. Plainly, Bert & family live in the City of Denver, so why he gets a
farm number, I don't know.
6. The parents of both Bert and Elmira were listed as born in Illinois. All four of the parents were born in New York. We know that, and I'd bet that Bert and Elmira knew it, too, so who gave the information to the enumerator? My money's on Esther. Esther as informant might also explain why her sister got demoted to "step daughter."

Almira Alice (Mira) Renslow and Bert Renslow appeared on the census of 1930 in Fort Lupton, Weld County, Colorado, which lists Bert Renslow, 57, llinois, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in New York; and his wife Alimira, 58, born in Illinois, father born in New York, mother born in Pennsylvania.⁴ She was a laborer in a cafe in 1930.⁴
