Biography

Eleazar was born on 5 May 1820. An alternative birthdate of 5 May 1818 is based on the date of death on his gravestone of 23 October 1855 at age 37 years, 5 months and 18 days [although it may actually be 16 days].

In a 9 March 2000 e-mail message, Eileen Roddy [now deceased] wrote:

The 5 May 1818 birthdate for Eleazar was calculated by me from the tombstone reading in East Valley Cemetery, so is subject to error. [Larry Renslow's] calculation of May 7 is most likely correct. However, I have changed my records to a birth year of 1820 as I feel quite certain the tombstone inscription is wrong.

In the 1850 Federal Census he is listed as 28 years old, which would make his birthdate 1822.

In the 1855 New York State Census he is listed as 35, which would make his birthdate 1820.

Also, his will was drafted on 23 July 1855, and he states he is 35 years of age at that time. I tend to feel the age of 35 is correct, and a birthdate of 1820 would certainly fit much better into the timing of his father William Renslow's marriages. But I am unaware of any record other than those noted.

.1

Eleazar Renslow married Lydia Anne English circa 1840.2

Eleazar Renslow died on 23 October 1855 in Alfred, Allegany County, New York, at age 35.1 He was buried in East Valley Cemetery, Alfred, Allegany County, New York. In a 3 March 2000 e-mail message, Eileen Roddy [now deceased] wrote:
On June 22, 1984, I located and photographed the grave of Eleazar Renslow in the East Valley Cemetery which is located on East Valley Road in Alfred, Allegany County, New York. The cemetery is abandoned and rather difficult to find. It was on the Perry farm and had to be approached on foot after parking at the end of Mr. Perry's driveway. In 1984 Mr. Perry and his son were keeping the weeds mowed in the cemetery simply because they did not like to see it deteriorate completely. It was becoming quite heavily wooded by that time also. It is situated on a high wooded knoll behind the farmhouse and barn. Eleazar's grave was located and the headstone reads as follows:
Eleazar Renslow
Died Oct. 23, 1855
37y 5m 18d
I read 18 days, and the extract [Larry Renslow] sent reads 16 days. That could well be an error on my part, but a rather insignificant one.3,1
Eleazar Renslow was a land owner in Alfred, Allegany County, NY as evidenced by his will.

Eleazar Renslow left a will dated 23 July 1855.

Eileen Roddy [now deceased] wrote in 10/98:
I have never heard the cause of his death at the young age of 35, but he apparently knew he did not have long to live as he wrote his will as of July 23, 1855, and died October 23, 1855.
In his will, he bequeathed:
To my wife Lydia Ann Renslow a good and comfortable support together with all the rights and privileges of the house and premises as a home as long as she lives provided always that she remains my widow.
To my son Freeman Renslow, the sum of five hundred dollars provided he shall remain at home and be a good industrious and obedient child until he shall become of the age of 21 years . . . and if he shall remain at home and assist in carrying on the farm he shall have an equal share in the profits of the farm with my other two sons.
To my daughter Adaline Renslow her choice in one of the bedrooms in the house and also a home in the house together with her support until she shall marry.............and also five hundred dollars.
To my son Gilbert B. Renslow and to my son Arthur Renslow their heirs or assigns, I give and devise all that tract or parcel of land situate in the town of Alfred in the county of Allegany and State of New York known as the Whitford farm and being one hundred acres in the northwest corner of Great Lot Number thirty five bounded.............quantity of 100 acres and no more, excepting fifteen acres of the north end of said lot heretofore sold to Phineas H. Shaw............
