Biography

Samuel was born on 30 September 1693 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.1,2 He married Abigail Ferry.

Samuel Janes, Jr., died on 4 May 1776 in Easthampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, at age 82.1 He was buried in East Street Cemetery, Easthampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.1

Samuel Janes, Jr. was eleven years old when his father, mother, friends and neighbors were slain by the merciless Indians on the memorable 13th of May 1704.
Coming to manhood, he found himself in possession of a large estate, having obtained title under his late father and uncle, Joseph. He owned principally what is called Pascomac, and it became a byword among the inhabitants who knew of his narrow escape, that "if the Indians had struck him another blow he would have owned the whole of Pascomac."
Samuel and Jonathan, the two escaped brothers, had an undivided interest in the lands of Northampton and Northfield, Massachusetts. They mutually agreed upon a division: Samuel was to retain those in Northampton, and Jonathan those in Northfield.
These lands were the estate of their grandfather William, The Emigrant, their own father, Samuel, Sr., and their deceased uncles. * * * * [Janes, page 104].

Jonathan Janes, Volunteer in the Siege of Fortress Louisbourg, Nova Scotia

There are a number of Jonathan Janes listed in the Janes Family genealogy. This Jonathan Janes (b. 1696) was one of two surviving sons of Samuel Janes and Sarah (Hinsdell) Janes who were killed with three of their children in the Indian massacre at Pascomuck, Massachusetts, in 1704. As the French and English vied for control of the new world, the northern outposts of the English colonies were often under attack by the French and Indians.

As a young man, Jonathan settled on a Janes lot in Northfield, Massachusetts, where he married Jemima Graves in 1732, fathered three daughters and one son and lived a long life, dying in 1776 at age 80. He was a weaver by trade, and he volunteered for several skirmishes with the French. He was with Capt. Joseph Kellogg's company in the winter of 1723-24 and with Capt. Timothy Dwight's company at Block-boufe from February to May 1724.

But, by far, his most notable battle was the Siege of Fortress Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. Jonathan Janes is listed as one of two volunteers from Northfield, Massachusetts, in The History of Northampton, Massachusetts, Volume II (at page 146), by James Russell Trumbull, 1902.

France had attacked England in 1744, and before the American colonists had news of the war the French raided Cansu, Nova Scotia, taking English fishermen as prisoners. This attack outraged the colonists, who still considered themselves English, but were actually first, second and third generation native Americans. Fortress Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island was built by the French in the early 1700s and was an imposing fortification. It was the largest fortress in the western hemisphere and was located on the main shipping lane between America and Europe. There is a particularly vivid account of the siege of the fortress in The Puritan Outpost, by Herbert C. Parsons, pgs. 136-137.

"Early in the next year the colony rose in strength to support Governor Shirley's project of an attack on Louisburg. The General Court had refused his proposal but a wave of popular approval swept away legislative objections. Three thousand men enlisted. The governments of states to the South came to support of the expedition in money and supplies. Northampton was the recruiting point for a company under the command of Seth Pomeroy, who was a major in the 4th Massachusetts regiment as well as this company's captain. John Alexander, son of Joseph and a long soldier at Fort Dummer, and Jonathan Janes, who was one of the family in the deadly raid at Pascomuck in 1704, went on the role of Pomeroy's company. Ebenezer Alexander, now sixty-one years old, who saw service in Rale's War and had been with Captain Wright in his scouting ventures, was given a lieutenant's commission in another company and won another as captain at the hands of Sir William Pepperell for his service in the siege of the Louisburg fortress.

"The citizen-soldier, who in two or three generations, had been developing out of the stout stuff of pioneer settlers, was now for the first time called from the familiar scenes of his home valley to bear his share in the same battle between nations in a region hundreds of miles away. To reach it, he would join in the march to Boston and spend days and nights on shipboard, putting a strain on his physical system, which Major Pomeroy described with only two precise particulars in a journal that recorded every turn in the weather and in his unaccustomed stomach.

"To reduce a citadel like Louisburg was an undertaking from which trained captains might shrink and through which highly drilled soldiers would be led to expected slaughter. The land forces in this venture were commanded by a Maine merchant, whose lack of military knowledge was as much an advantage as was the want of discipline in the ranks of his army, every man in which was an adept in single-handed combat, made so in the tactics the Indian had compelled them to develop. After the siege was over, it was recorded that the uncouth but on the whole effective movements of the invaders greatly perplexed the garrison and the strangeness of the attack to have in a measure unnerved them. Terrific cannonading from the Commodore Peter Warren's ships supplemented the amateur movements of fearless fighters on land, one vantage point after another was captured and, on June 16, the garrison surrendered."

Author James Russell Trumbull has included in his History of Northampton, Massachusetts (Vol. II) the entire Journal of Major Seth Pomeroy, who described the preparations and the Siege of Fortress Louisbourg.

The Colonists had learned they were very good soldiers and could fight better than most. They didn't know a lot about firing canons, but they were excellent riflemen and snipers. After winning this unlikely battle, the colonists returned home, leaving the fortress to the British. In three years, the British decided in a treaty they would give the fortress back to the French in exchange for the island Madras, near India. The colonists were enraged. They had won the fortress by overcoming enormous odds. The Crown's decision rankled these men who had left their farms and homes to fight the French. The British eventually decided the French-controlled fortress was a thorn in their shipping side, so they mounted a second attack, using 23,000 troops in 1758 to take what 4,300 colonists had taken in 1745.

Historians generally agree that the successful raid on Fortress Louisbourg by a comparative handful of rag-tag colonists was the forerunner of the American Revolution. Many of the men who fought in that siege also fought at Bunker Hill.

Mary K. Shell: I have visited Fortress Louisbourg twice, in 1997 and 1999. The Canadian government financed its restoration in the 1960s using former mine workers, who retrained as building craftsmen. About 1/3 of the fortress has been restored and is well worth visiting. If you have an interest, the Fortress has a web page. It is http://fortress.uccb.ns.ca. We also visited Kittery, Maine, the home of William Pepperell, citizen commander of the colonist volunteers.)1

John Janes married Frances (Fanny) Cochran on 26 January 1833 in Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio.5,6

John Janes married Eunice Stanbury on 12 January 1847 in Delaware County, Ohio.7

John Janes died on 12 November 1858 in Berlin Township, Delaware County, Ohio, at age 87.

Rev. John Janes died at his residence in Berlin Township, Delaware County, Ohio November 21st 1858, in the 88th year of his age. Father Janes was a native of one of the Eastern States, came to Ohio and settled on the farm, where he lived and died, forty years ago. He embraced religion when in his sixteenth year, and ever after through life's long journey, endeavored to live the life of the righteous; and for a number of years has been a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The writer became acquainted with him the latter part of last winter, when engaged in holding a protracted meeting in his neighborhood, in which he took a very active part. Though the infirmitives of old age were upon him, he was a regular attendant night and day at the meeting, adding much to the interest of the same by his frequent reference to his experience, and intercession at the throne of grace, and his warm and powerful exhortations to the unconverted to immediately embrace the Savior. After the above meeting, and up to the time of his death, he was very regular upon his attendance upon the means of grace, and living in the full enjoyment of the love of God in his heart; and often have we heard him express his desire to depart and be with Christ, and to join with those who had gone before, among whom were quite a goodly number of his family and relatives. Two of his sons who had preceded him to the land of glory, were ministers in the Methodist E. Church. Rev. John Janes Jr., was for a number of years, a traveling minister in Northern Ohio. Father Janes assisted us by giving of his means, to the erection of a very neat church in his neighborhood, during the last summer, in which his funeral sermon was preached by the writer, to a large and weeping congregation of his friends and neighbors. His death was somewhat unexpected, but it found him ready. May his friends who are left behind, each one of them, follow in his footsteps, until all shall meet in the land of the blessed, where sickness, sorrow, pain and death, and separation of friends are never known.

From the Delaware Gazette, Dec. 17, 1858: OBITUARY.
Rev. John Janes died at his residence in Berlin township, Delaware county, Ohio, Nov. 21, 1858, in the eighty-eighth year of his age.
Father Janes had lived on the farm where he died forty-four years, embraced religion in his sixteenth year, lived in the service of God from that time until his death, and for a number of years was a Minister of the Gospel, shunning not to declare the whole counsel of God; and though death came somewhat unexpected, yet he was ready, and slept his life's last hours away, leaning doubtless, on the breast of his Savior. He leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn, but not as those who have no hope; and may they all follow in his footsteps, till all meet in bright glory. Written by request. Funeral services by the writer.
Tho. T. Rose.
Cardington, O.
