TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Gary H. Houghton. 64, of Long Lake Township, died Thursday, Aug. 14. 1997, at his home.
He was born April 7. 1933, in Elmwood Township, Leelanau County. Mich., to Harold and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Houghton. On June 13, 1953. in Biloxi, Miss., he married the former Beatrice (Bea) Crouch. He was a mechanical technician for Gas Compression Services, from 1984 until he retired in 1997 due to ill health. He formerly was associated with Lynch Acoustical for 25 years.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He enjoyed writing songs and poetry and was member of the Songwriters Guild of America. He also enjoyed fox hunting, fishing, softball and was aSurvivors include his wife: four sons. Delbert (Tammy) of Spring Grove, Wayne (Charlotte) Houghton of Cedar. Mich., Brian (Susan) Houghton of Traverse City. Mich., and Mark Houghton of Corydon, Ind; nine grandchildren. Briannne, Lindsay, Eric, Sarah. Alex. Brittany. Danielle. Jeremy and Kelly: four sisters, Jessie (Jerry) Fouch. Nancy (Glen) Coleman. Jeri (John) Fouch and Jean (Bill) Watkoski, all of Traverse City, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were entrusted to Reynolds Johnkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City, Mich.
Memorials may be to made to the Long Lake Reading Center. in care of Long Lake Township Hall. 8870 N. Long Lake Road, Traverse City, Mich., or to the Munson Hospice.

Mr. Monte J. Houghton of Lilburn, a management consultant, died Tuesday after suffering an apparent stroke in his car in DeKalb County. He was 58.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Wages and Sons Funeral Home in Stone Mountain with burial at Melwood Cemetery. Mr. Houghton, a native of Ripley, Tenn., was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are a son, Rudy. Houghton of Miami; two stepsons, Russell Hilderbrand of Decatur and Mark Hilderbrand of Tucker; a daughter, Susan Ruth Watson of Lake Worth, Fla; and a stepdaughter, Susan Renee Xander of Lawrenceville.
