Ethel Grace Houghton
LONG LAKE — Ethel Grace Houghton, 77, died Thursday (Dec. 14, 1989) at Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness. Bom in Batavia, March 5, 1912, she was the daughter of Newton P. and Nellie A. (Kellogg) Whitcomb.
She married Allen Houghton in Long Lake on June 11, 1939. He died before her on June 28, 1949. And one brother, Ellsworfh Whitcomb, died before her . Mrs. Houghton had been Long Lake town clerk from July 1. 1949, until Dec. 31,1987, and then served as deputy town clerk until her death. She also served as treasurer of the Calvary United Methodist Church for many years. Mrs. Houghton’s dedication to the public was cited by Long Lake Town Supervisor John Hosley, who, upon her retirement as town clerk, said, “She was constantly available to the public. Ethel arose before daylight for hunters and fishermen and extended hours for those who
couldn’t get there during business hours.” He also said she had “complete recall of town business” and “the ability to gently but firmly steer the government in the right direction.”
Survivors include two cousins, Richard Faye of Plcasantville and David Whitcomb of Batavia; one niece, Amy Houghton of Long Lake; and one nephew, Allen Houghton of Long Lake.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Calvary United Methodist Church of Long Lake. Burial will be at the Long Lake Cemetery.

Archie Bass, 80, Beetown, died Friday, August 21, 1970, in a Lancaster Hospital after a long illness. He farmed in the Beetown area all his life.

He is survived by his wife, Birdie; a sister, Mrs. John Wold, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and a brother, Harvey, Lancaster.

The funeral service was held at 2pm Monday in the Harris-Wepking Funeral Home. Rev Alvin Moore officiated with burial in Hillside Cemetery.²

Joseph R Foster, 56 Rout 2, Lancaster, died Saturday at Memorial hospital where he had been taken two hours previously by the Rescue Squad. He had been ailing for a long time.

Services were held Tuesday at 2pm at the Harris and Wepking funeral home. The Rev Erwin Warber of the Evangelical and Reformed church officiated and burial was in Hillside cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, the former Stella Houghton, one daughter, Mrs. Wilbur (Etola) Heberlein, his mother, Mrs. Fred Foster of Bloomington, one brother, Harley Foster, Lancaster, and one sister Mrs. Clyde Duncan, Lancaster.

Mr. Foster was born in Beetown Township and farmed most of his life. He was active in West Grant Saddle club horse shows.
