HOUGHTEN, FRED D; age 88; a life time resident of Rochester, businessman and elected Oakland County official; went Home to be with his Lord March 6, 2008; born July 19, 1920; on the family farm; to the late Lester and Blanche (Weaver) Houghten. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1939 and attended Michigan State University. He left M.S.U. after two years to join his father in the family business but remained a staunch M.S.U. fan for the rest of his life. In 1948 he opened the Oldsmobile-GMC dealership in Rochester and successfully operated it for 25 years. He was the founder of Rochester National Bank (now National City Bank), investor and manager of the 134 W. University Professional Building and regional director of Community National Bank. He was Chairman of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners and the Oakland County Road Commission. Active in his community, Fred was a member of the St. Paul's Methodist Church, the Rochester Kiwanis, the Rochester Rotary Club and a life member of B.P.O.E. #2225. On August 14, 1942 he married Betty Jean Ostrom and they had 65 wonderful years together; loving father of Ginny (Rev. Thomas) Crichton, Bob Houghten, Rev. Kenneth (Dawn) Houghten and the late Carolyn Houghten Nowak; doting grandfather of Kristy, Myah, Audra, Joy, Charisa, Dan, David, Paul, Tim and Kern; great grandfather of 24; brother of Herb, Glen, Elmer and the late Vern Houghten. A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Drive in Rochester with private burial in Mt. Avon Cemetery. Visitation Thursday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Joanne's House at Hope Hospice and envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Fred was a gentle gentleman who had the respect of his family, friends and community.
