Jeanne B. Houghton, 91, formerly of Fargo, ND, Pelican Lake, MN, and Green Valley, AZ, passed away on August 15, In Fort Collins, CO. The family is planning a
private memorial service sometime in the fall. Jeanne was born in Cicero, IL on June 23, 1924 to Velma and Willard Bull. She grew up in Scotch Plains, NJ, received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in English from North Dakota State University. Jeanne was married to James F. Houghton on January 29,1949; they were married for 62 years and had four children. Jeanne worked for Good Housekeeping magazine in New York City, until she and James moved to Texas, then North Dakota. She focused her time on raising their four children and being involved in numerous charitable organizations. She was always happiest surrounded by her family and friends, spending summers on Pelican Lake and hours spent on the tennis court. Jeanne is survived by her children, Peter (Shelly), Susan (Jim), Deborah (John) and Steven (Pam), seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, her brother-in-law, Monsignor Francis Houghton and her two nieces and nephew. Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents and her two siblings Clifford Bull and Marilyn Bull Scott. The family of Jeanne wishes to thank the caregivers at Columbine Health and Rehabilitation in Fort Collins, CO and to thank the staff and caregivers at La Posada-La Joya in Green Valley, AZ. Thank you to Goes Funeral Care tor handling the arrangements in Fort Collins, CO.

Nancy: Additionally, here is what I have surmised about Guillermo's Houghton family. I mentioned that we hold the idea that Guillermo's family is from the Norman branch. The other tidbits I can add to the story are that Guillemo's father was Roman Catholic - most of the Houghton's we have come across are C of E or another protestant denominaiton. Guillermo and I traveled to England in 1996 on vacation. While there, we traveled to Rugby,Warwickshire, where Guillermo's father was born. We had no success in locating anyone, but we did not come with a plan to do so either. While in England we came across a village called Great Houghton. What do you do when you come across a sign that says Welcome to Great Houghton except have your photo taken in front of it? After taking our photos and having a good laugh, we wandered into the local Catholic Church (We love to look at old churches). In the back of the church they featured a list of all of the priests that had served in their church. There were 2 Houghtons, actually de Houghtons - that had served sometime in the 1200s. We also have read about a Jesuit priest, I think his name is John Houghton, who was matyred for the faith.

Biography

There are at least five children (one deceased) by two different wives. The first wife died of cancer in the mid 1940s and Mr. Houghton remarried. HIs second wife, Dorila Canales, is the mother of my husband and his two brothers.Mr. Houghton died on December 9, 1953 of heart disease. My husband was 6 years old at the time, his brothers were 4 and 2 years old, respectively. His records were stored in the British Embassy in Guatemala City. The British Embassy burnt down.
We have searched for English family members, but with no success. We have done the obvious things, requesting a birth certificates, marriage certificates, contacting a genealogist near Rugby, etc. We travelled to Rugby and my husband was interviewed by the local newspaper. We left our information with the paper, in case anyone knew of the family and wished to contact us. There are very few records remaining. We have a scanned image of Mr. Houghton's permission to land in the U.S. (he was a member of Britain's Merchant Marines). We also have anecdotal information, Charles William Houghton bears his father's name. HIs mother's name was Lily Brown (?).
Charles William Houghton worked in the British Merchant Marine out, shipping out of Liverpool. He eventually settled in Honduras, where he worked for the United Fruit Company.
He was known as Charles William, but he seems to have added the Charles part himself later.¹

Research

Charles William Houghton's official papers were housed in the British Embassy in Guatemala City , I am told that burnt down after Mr. Houghton died (he died in (12/9/1953 - when Guillermo was 6 years old and his brothers were younger). Also Guillermo's mother's (Dorila Canales Houghton) house burnt down as well - somethings were rescued, but some papers were lost.
In addition, we believe that Charles William was a nonpracticing Roman Catholic. When he died he was buried in a RC ceremony by a Jesuit priest that was a good personal friend of his, Fr. John Murphy. The boys were all baptized in the RC church. Guillermo's mother was a protestant.

Guillermo says his father was in the Merchant Marines. The Crown of Castile (the ship he was on for that document) is a Thomas and Harrison Line ship. Charles William worked for the United Fruit Company as an irrigation manager for their banana plantations. Chiquita Brands now owns United Fruit Company.

Dear Mrs. Houghton,

Having searched through our archives for details of Mr. Charles William Houghton, I have found only one reference which I fear may not be of much use to you. The record I have found is for William Houghton, who was baptised on 3rd July 1898. Unusually, there is no record of his date of birth, or his parents. Above his name, in Latin, it says "domi in periculo mortis".

It may, however, interest you to learn that a Lilian May Houghton was born on 2nd May 1893 Baptised at St. Marie's on 15th September 1893. Her parents are listed as Charles William Houghton and May Houghton. Again, over her name it is written "domi in periculo mortis". Her Godparents are listed as John McKenna and Maria Clara Turner. Perhaps Lilian May Houghton is a relation of your father-in-law?
