Don W. Houghton, O.D., 71, of Amarillo passed Thursday, August 31, 2017.

Dr. Houghton was born March 11, 1946, in Amarillo to Waldo E. Houghton, O.D., and Inez Houghton Henslee. He was a lifelong resident and practicing optometrist in Amarillo for 46 years; he was passionate and fully committed to his patients and community alike. Providing the best possible care to all who walked through his doors cultivated a great sense of pride that resonated throughout his entire life.

“We always said it was fun to spoil each other,” said Mrs. Houghton. He married the love of his life, and was faithfully devoted to his wife Becky for 34 years. Although the two found romance underneath the sailing booms while island hopping in the Caribbean, his greatest adventure was raising three spunky kids who adored him. Dr. Houghton is survived by Drew Houghton of Oklahoma City, Okla; Shanon Houghton Cox of Austin, Tex; and Gentrye Houghton and husband, Ryan Kenney, of Redstone, Colo; his only living sibling, Linda Houghton Doudney and husband, Wayne, of Mustang, Okla., and their two children, Andrew Doudney and Ashley Wetzel, both residing in Mustang.

He was a ’64 graduate of Amarillo High School, and earned a Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston in 1971. Houghton believed in academic pursuits in order to best care for his patients, and later earned a certification in Therapeutic Optometry as well as becoming a Glaucoma Specialist through the U. of H.

He was an active member of the Polk Street United Methodist Church and Amarillo Area Corvette Club; he served as past president of AMBUCS, Panhandle Optometric Society, the Corvette club, and was a former Deacon for the First Christian Church of Amarillo. Dr. Houghton is well known for his love of fast cars and enjoyed sailing, golfing, hunting, fly-fishing, and playing guitar.

Relationships were of the upmost important to him; for those who knew him, you couldn’t help but love him. Mere words cannot express the mutual love Dr. Houghton shared with his family.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 8, at Polk Street United Methodist Church with Pastor Burt Palmer officiating. Preparations are being handled by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Inez Houghton Henslee was born March 10, 1926, to E.C. and Lura Wilcox in Childress. She was a life-long resident of Amarillo, Texas moving to Amarillo in 1941, and married to Dr. W.E. Houghton for 35 years until his death in 1973. She was active in the First Christian Church of Amarillo, and enjoyed friends and family to the utmost.

She was preceded in death by her parents and thirteen brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a sister, Montez Temple, of Winnsboro; by Homer Henslee, whom she married in January of 1994; a son, Dr. Don Houghton and wife, Becky, of Amarillo; a daughter, Linda Houghton Doudney, and husband Wayne of Mustang, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Drew Houghton of Oklahoma City, Shanon Houghton of Austin, Gentrye Houghton Kenney and husband Ryan of Amarillo, Andrew Doudney and wife, L'lana, of Oklahoma City, and Ashley Doudney Wetzel and husband James, of San Diego, California; and five great-grandchildren, Cayeden, Emerson and Addison Doudney, Cash and Weston Wetzel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Alice Houghton, who witnessed the historic July 16, 1945, test of the first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert, died Sunday in a local hospital. She was 80.

Because Houghton had worked on the Manhattan Project, the secret World War II effort to develop an atomic weapon, she was allowed to observe the test. World War II ended a few weeks later after the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan.

Houghton suffered no ill effects from exposure to the nuclear blast.

How she came to participate in the pivotal event is a tale of love and war.

She and her future husband, Junius Henry Houghton Jr., had met and fallen in love in San Antonio, where he was stationed in the Army at Kelly Field. An enlisted man, he was the son of an Army general, Junius Henry Houghton.

After their wedding, Junius Jr. was sent to England.

Mary Houghton then joined the Women's Army Corps. Because she had a degree in chemistry from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, she was selected for special duty.

After training in Iowa, she traveled by train, not knowing where she was going, to Los Alamos, N.M., where the Manhattan Project was based.

Her son, Hank Houghton, said his mother never discussed the details of her work.

Mary Houghton proudly saved a certificate, signed by Secretary of War Henry Stimson and dated Aug. 6, 1945 - the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima - citing her participation in "work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II."

After the war, Junius Houghton went to work in Houston selling building supplies. After their children were grown and her husband had retired, Mary worked for about 10 years in jewelry stores.

In 1978, Mary and Junius Houghton opened their own store, Houghton's Jewelers, in the Northbrook Shopping Center at 34th and U.S. 290.

Operated by their son Hank and daughter, Hazel Lucille Houghton, the store is still in business at that location.

Junius Houghton worked with his wife in the store until his death in 1988.

Active in the Republican Party, Mary Houghton met a young man in the 1960s, George H.W. Bush, who impressed her. Hank Houghton remembers his mother saying: "This guy would make a great president."

Mary Alice Murphy Houghton was born in Nacogdoches but grew up in San Antonio. She graduated from Incarnate Word Academy there before enrolling at Our Lady of the Lake.

In addition to Hank and Hazel, she leaves another daughter, Elizabeth Ann Houghton of Lufkin.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Christian Cemetery in Nacogdoches.⁴

RUTH FRIER HOUGHTON

Mrs. Lynn L. Houghton of San Angelo passed away at 8:15 a.m. May 21,1991, in Shannon Medical Center.

Service will beat 1 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Street Church of Christ with Mr. Stanley Lockhart, minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, directed by Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Mrs. Houghton was born Ruth Frier in Shawneetown, Ill., to C.A. Frier and Jessie Smith Frier.

A nurse at the Clinic-Hospital in San Angelo for a number of years, she received her R.N. at St. Luke's School of Nursing in St. Louis in 1927.

She was married-to Lynn Luttrell Houghton in June 1939 in Inglewood, Calif. She was a nurse at Pasadena's Huntington Memorial Hospital before they moved to San Angelo in 1941. Her husband preceded her in death in January 1991.

She was- active in the Angelo Garden Club in years past, and pictures of the flowers in the yard of her home occasionally graced the pages of the Standard Times.

She is survived by three sons, Stephen Lynn Houghton of Tulsa, Okla., Michael Smith Houghton of San Angelo, and Frederick Frier Houghton of Austin; a sister, Betty Jean Frier of Benton, Ill; two granddaughters, Christy Rodriquez of Tulsa and Ruth Ann Houghton of Austin; and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Krystyne Rodriquez of Tulsa.

Pallbearers will be Bill Colby, Pat Patterson, Marvin Barnes, Herbert Macklin, Lonnie Porter and J. D. Davis.
