further it adds up. Hannah Houghton' s parents were Thomas Houghton and

Obviously this baptism is too old to be his, but it might be a clue since the name is the same.
BiographyWhittier, p. 3: "A tradition exists in several branches of the family that the name is of French origin. However this may be it appears in England at an early date. Bardsley in his work on English Surnames, writes that, "Urian, Urion, Uren, Urin, Uran.--Bapt. "The son of Urian." Both the masculine Uranius and the feminine Urania were in use as personal names. On a Welsh Variant Urien. A surname founded on this name seems to have crept into Staffordshire and Cheshire, and thence into Lancashire.

1635 John d. Finlye Eurin.
1671 John Urran of Everton; Wills at Chester.
1680 Alice Urian of Christleton."
Richard Stephen Charnock in his Ludus Patronymicus, says, "Urine. The same as the Cornish name Euren, from Cornish voren, strange, or a corruption of Uren, from the ancient personal name Urwyn, for Irvine, from Irvine, a parish of Scotland, co. Ayr (formerly written Irwyn and Irwine), on the river Irvine. Urann, Urin are found as United Sates names."

Whittier, p. 3: "1. William Urin, sometimes spelled Uran, Urann, Uren, Yuran, Youring and Yourin, was probably the ancestor of all bearing name in New England. It has not been learned where he came from, but he was at Isles of Shoals as early as 1653, for on 12 Sept. 1653 he was granted a lot of land there, "between goodman Jacsone and William Cotton with convenient la[nding?]." At various times later he was given grants of land. He was one of the petitioners "that a Court might be held at the Isles of Shoals," also "that the inhabitants might be granted the privileges of a town." Like most of the inhabitants of the islands he was a fisherman. He died at the Isles of Shoals, and the inventory of his estate, files 11 July 1664, amounted to L433.12.8."

The Urin, Urann, Youring genealogy is from "The Urann Family of New England Including the Descendants of Margaret (Urann) Gammell" by Charles Collyer Whittier of Boston, Mass. Boston, Press of David Clapp and Son, 1910. (Sutro Library on Microfiche G3 G2024). New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 64, 1910, pp 1-12 & 116-128 is a partial article of the book.

Torrey, C.A., New England Marriages, p. 764: "Urin, William (-1664) & Eleanor ?, m/2 Richard Welcom; by 1650?; Star Isl/Portsmouth NH

N[oyes: p. 703, " William, fisherman, Star Isl. by 1653 when also rec. in Portsm. where he had a ho.-lot 1657 (Gt. Isl.)..He d. Apr., adm. to cr[editors]., later declared illegal, 13 May, inv. 11 July 1664. His wid. Eleanor m. Richard Welcom who bot part of the est. 17 July 1672."

Noyes: Urin, Urine, Uran, Urann, Euren, Youring, etc.

McCoy: "At Isles of Shoals, NH (then under jurisdiction of Massachusetts) as early as 18 May 1653, when he signed the petition to the court at Boston requesting establishment of Isles of Shoals as a township. The request was granted, and the Isles became Appledore Township, though they were rarely known under this name. There is also later reference to a transaction dating from 12 sep 1653 when he was granted land on Star Island "between goodman Jacksone and William Cotton with convenient landing". He appears in various land and civil records until his death in 1664 as a resident of Star Island. Administration of his estate was granted to Jonathan Wade, Capt. Brian Pendleton, Richard Cutt, and Nathaniel Fryer 13 may 1664. On 11 jul 1664 Pendleton presented "A trew Invice of the goods of Williem Uren deceased the last of Apperill 1664" thus establishing the approximate date of his death. The inventory totaled L 433.12.8 and was signed by Jonathan Hunking, John Fabes, and Christopher Joce. In 1685, Nathaniel ffryer made affidavit that the widow of William Urin had married Richard Woolcomb before 1672, and that the Urin's admistrators had granted her, with the approval of Richard Woolcomb, the house (presumably the one on Star Island) together with land owned by her late husband on Great Island at Pascataqua as her third of the estate. Many of the names appearing in these documents are connected through wills and other transactions. However, confusion may arise due to the presence of families with similar names (for example, Joce and Goss) that may or may not refer to the same persons.

The earliest Portsmouth land grant for William Urin recorded by the Genealogical Encyclopedia of Maine and New Hampshire, 1939, concerns a 40 ft. square on Great Island where he was to erect a frame, 07 sep 1657.

The name Uren is found in England mainly in Cornwall. Other residents of Star Island are thought to have come from Wales, Devonshire, and Dorsetshire, most likely from fishing towns.

The ages of most members of this family can be estimated closely, assuming that the relationships are correctly inferred from the historical records. So far, the dates can be made to fit, although Richard Woolcombe, second husband of Eleanor, works out to be at least 13 years her junior (he was about 26, she perhaps 39)."

1870 book titled "Irish Local Names Explained": possibly an Irish word: "odran" or "odhran (used as a name: Oran [Ooran]) and anglicised as Oran/Uran/Yurin. Uaran apparently meant a "cold spring" in Irish in 1870. A place in Galway was called Oranmore (a big, cold spring). The book entry says Uaran is the Irish form with Uran as the pronunciation of the Irish word.

Uran: Name is probably Norse in origin. "Erlin" is found in runic inscription in Vinland as accompanying th Norse expedition to Greenland in 13th century. Name spelled Uran, Urann, Uren, Yuran, Youring and Yourin. (In MA Soldiers, spelled Uram, Uran, Urin, Urine, Uron, Yoarine, Yourine)

Isles of Shoals is a group of 7 rocky islands 6 miles SE of Portsmouth NH, Chiefly in Maine (Hog, Smuttynose, Cedar, Duck); three in NH, incorporated as Gosport (Star, White, Lunging). First known for its fishing industry, but declined after the Revol. War. Then became a summer resort. Captain John Smith named them in 1614. Prior to 1652 under ME; then MA; see The Isles of Shoals by John Scribner Jenness, 1875

Isles of Shoals (White Island), NH: Isles of Shoals (White Island) Lighthouse
The Isles of Shoals are a small group of nine islands six miles off the Atlantic coast, straddling the border between Maine and New Hampshire. The islands were divided up in 1629 between Captain John Mason, who owned New Hampshire, and Sir Ferdinando Gorges, who owned the Province of Maine. Maine ended up with five of the islands and New Hampshire the other four. Isles of Shoals Lighthouse sits atop White Island, the most southerly of the islets.
Although the Isles of Shoals are mostly barren and sparsely populated today, they have a lively history. They were originally named the Smith Islands (or Smith’s Isles in some accounts), after the famous Captain John Smith who helped settle the Jamestown Colony in Virginia in 1607. Smith had spent a number of years exploring the coast off Maine, mapping the coastline and naming many of the islands, but these islands were the only ones he decided to put his own name on – apparently their beauty earned them a special place in Smith’s heart. Early fishermen changed the name to Shoal of Isles, reportedly because the islands resembled a shoal of fish. Later, the name became Isles of Shoals.
In 1623, a fishing settlement was started on the islands, and within five years there were enough people living there to support two taverns. Maine’s first church followed a few years later in 1640. Some of the resident fishermen thought the islands should be an all-male preserve. In 1647 Richard Cutt, a settler on Hog Island (now more elegantly named Appledore Island), filed an official complaint: “John Reynolds has brought his wife hither with the intention that she live and abide here, contrary to an act of court which says that no woman shall live upon the Isles of Shoals…he has also brought upon Hog Island a great stock of goats and swine which spoil the spring water…our petitioners therefore pray that the Act of Court be put in execution for the removal of women inhabiting here.” The courts ordered that the goats and swine be removed, but allowed the women to stay.14,15,6

The identity of this Joseph has not been established. One of the overseers of the will was Richard Gooss or Goss, her "kinsman". Might this word connote cousin or brother-in-law? Nothing has been learned about Eleanor's age, either. The five children appear to be the three Urans and the two Muchemores, contrary to the speculations of Libbey (Geneal. Enc. ME & NH) about Gertrude Toogood, wife of Edward Toogood, whose names appear on the back of a document relating to the estate of Eleanor. Aside from the fact that we have already identified five living children at the time of her death, Zachaeus Wilcome evidently dying shortly after, the notation about Gertrude apparently contains the same names as the guardian's bond in the estate of Allen Lloyd, which was before the court in 1701. It seems likely that someone was jotting down notes on a handy piece of paper, and did not intend the two estates to appear related.

There are many references to Eleanor's activities on Star Island after the death of William Urin. She seems to have been quite enterprising. She is noted selling liquor at various times, perhaps in larger amounts than expected, and her will mentions a new boat that she then owned.

Probably the most interesting of these references is the following, 27 Jun 1665, the New Hampshire Court meeting at Dover. "Upon a Complaint made by several masters of vinges [i.e., wines] on Star Iland against Widow Urin James Waymouth Roger Kelly John More & siprus [Onesiphorus] Clary [Harvey] for selling of beare & Liquors upon said Iland without Licence whereby theire men were hindered in following theire busines & was owned [i.e., admitted] by them all except John More who was not at Court to make his answer This Court sentence is That Widow Urin who having Libertie by the Comissoners there to sell in time of waying fish yet had exceeded ye time Limited that she have an admonition & pay Tho. Sevy 10 s & fies 2 s 6 d John More to pay fine..." (etc. -- Thomas Seavy was the constable at that time, and widow Urin and Waymouth also had to pay him "for his panes to fetch them to this Court." When James Waymouth, John More, and Richard Wilcom appear two years later charged with selling "by retaile" wine, beer, and cider without a license Wilcom's wife answers for him in court, pleading "that it was but waying time." The similarity of the charges, the parties involved, and the circumstances make us suspect that Wilcom's wife at that time was in fact Eleanor, the widow Urin. She did not go away empty handed on this last occasion: The court also granted James Waymouth and Richard Wilcome license to open a "house of publick entertainment" during the time of weighing of fish, the license to be renewed annually.

In 1687, one William Button, evidently a Jersey trader, died at Isles of Shoals. The inventory notes debts owed to John Yousring and credits due from John Yousring and Ellenor Welcom (NH Probate Files, #117, not examined), thus providing yet another spelling. The document may have been prepared by someone with a French background, as the surname Diamond is here spelled "Disment", and a number of other names have an extra "s" at the end of the first syllable.

In 1668, her son Edward Urin sold his interest in William Urin's estate to James Blagdon. The same James Blagdon, with Richard Goss, signed the inventory of Eleanor Welcom's estate 12 oct 1699, and on 01 feb 1699/1700 was surety for the bond of John Muchemore, administrator for the estate. This suggests he may have retained an interest in the family's business. It is possible he was related in some way to one of Eleanor's families. Blagdon was born about 1638, according to Libbey's Geneal. Enc. ME NH, and his was Joan, widow of William Diamond and Edward Carter (meaning, evidently, the Edward Cater who appears in NH probate and court records).

A number of researchers have tried to determine Eleanor's relationship to her "kinsman" Richard Goss. None of these has managed to advance even a reasonable explanation, and the detailed query that appeared in the Boston Evening Transcript 03 nov 1930 (#869) seems never to have been answered."1,10,5

BiographyWhittier: "was probably daughter of John Westbrook of Portsmouth"

McCoy: Evidence for parentage of Abigail is highly circumstantial. On 21 mar 1692 John Westbrook sold land in Portsmouth to his son-in-law John Urin. Since John's second wife is known to be Rebecca Cate, this transaction has
traditionally been taken as evidence that John's first wife Abigail was John
Westbrook's daughter. This is complicated by the assertion collected by
Torrey (New England Marriages before 1700) that John Westbrook married Alice
Cate, widow of James Cate and mother of Rebecca Cate, sometime after the death of James Cate in 1677. However, contemporary evidence for this marriage has not been located. In fact, the estate of James Cate came before the probate court as late as 1702, and still refers to Alice Cate, widow and administratrix of James Cate of Portsmouth, carpenter. It does not seem likely that Alice would still be named Cate if she had remarried to Westbrook. John Westbrook, meanwhile, died in 1697, and his widow Alice renounced adminstration of the estate of her husband in favor of his oldest son, Thomas Westbrook. If the widow in question was indeed Alice Cate, and if married John Westbrook before 1692, then it is possible that John Urin would be Westbrook's "son-in-law" by virtue of the latter being the stepfather of the former's wife. In that case, Abigail would not have to be a Westbrook at all.

The matter is not settled by the documents relating to John Westbrook's
estate. No indication survives of who the heirs-at-law were."1,6,3
