Notebetween Feb 5, 1725 and 1742Penacook/Concord, NH, USA, He was one of founders of Concord, NH. He was clearly land in 1726-1727. “Dr. Rolfe was the first settler, and resided near the residence of the late captain Emery. The second settler was Richard Uran, afterwards of Newbury. They passed the Winter of 1726 at Penacook, living mostly upon the fruits of the wilderness and the charities of the Indians.” It is obvious from reading the earliest histories of the settlement, that Henry Rolfe and Richard Urann, and possibly others were the FIRST SETTLERS, but
their families did not spend that first terrible winter with them. It is acknowledged that the Eastman family was probably the earliest FAMILY of settlers, who arrived later in 1727.
Richard Urann/Urin was, by 1725, among those on the original list of the first settlers of Penacock (Concord), NH. He was in Concord the winter of 1726, and drew lots 6, 8, and 42 in the division of land there. Although he may have sold portions of his lot (1731), at the time of his second marriage in Newbury MA in 1742, he was still listed as a resident of Concord. After that marriage, he is believed to have remained in Newbury, and died there in 1776. His children stayed in the Concord area-a son John residing in nearby Boscawen, along with a daughter Mehitable who married Edward Fitzgerald. His descendants remained in the area, to this day.9

BiographyWhittier: "The earliest record found of him is his marriage at Haverhill, Mass. He was one of the first settlers of Penacook (Concord), N.H., and was admitted in 5 Feb. 1725. The records show that he spent the winter of 1726 at Concord. In the division of land he drew lots Nos. 6, 8 and 42. He sold a portion of these lots to John Wainwright of Ipswich, Mass., 7 Apr. 1731. He was at Concord as late as 1742, when he married his second wife, who was of Newbury Mass., and it may have been this fact that induced him to return to Newbury. With Sarah Urin, who in the deed is called a spinster, both being of Newbury, he sold land and buildings in Ipswich 11 Apr. 1752 (Essex Deeds, vol 119, p. 39)...He died at Newbury 13 Jan 1776, aged 90 years. His children were baptised at Ipswich."

Noyes: "Richard, ag. 90 in 1776, Boston, Concord (N.H.), Haverhill, Newbury, called eldest s. in Urann gen. (N.E. Reg., 1910), not ment. in div. or deeds, is unplaced; of Haverhill, he was sued in 1717 for a Boston board bill incurred in 1716; more likely an unrec. s. of Francis(4) or s. of an unkn. s. of [William](4)."

McCoy: "Birthdate is based on age at death of 90 years. That would put his birth between 14 jan 1684/85 and 13 jan 1685/86, 10 months before his father's second marriage. On the face of it, this also puts his mother's death somewhere in the same period. However, age at death in town records does not seem very reliable. A search of records in Portsmouth, NH is needed. Because Richard Uran died after 1771, none of his children or grandchildren or grandchildren were involved in the family deed of 1771.

The first record of Richard Uran is his marriage in Haverhill, MA in 1717. By 1725, he was one of the first settlers of Penacook (Concord), NH. He was in Concord the winter of 1726, and drew lots 6, 8, and 42 in the division of land there. At the time of his second marriage in Newbury, 1742, he was still listed as a resident of Concord. After that marriage, he is believed to have remained in Newbury, and died there in 1776. Some of his children were baptized at Ipswich, but James and Jonathan's baptisms have not been located, possibly because the family was then in Concord.

Essex Co., MA deeds, vol. 119, p. 39, shows Richard Urin and Sarah Urin,
spinster, selling land and buildings in Ipswich 11 apr 1752. This transaction needs further study to determine how the land may have been acquired. The later history of this couple needs more investigation. C. C. Whittier missed the record in Newbury of their son Benjamin. Assuming the death record there in 1813 is in fact his, we might expect to find additional deeds or probate records.

The account of his life demonstrates how loosely town boundaries were treated in early records, or else how often families moved from one town to another. The research of C. C. Whittier on the Urann Family of New England was very thorough; however, it is possible that further research will eventually fill in some of the gaps in the wanderings of this family.

Further attention to details of the various land transactions may help establish the death date of his first wife and possibly the second also.

The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire suggests that Richard is not actually the son of John Uran, noting that he is not mentioned in any of the family deeds or divisions, and that he was sued in 1717 at Haverhill for an unpaid board bill incurred in Boston in 1716. However, he does not seem to belong to any other known lineage.

Son Jonathan is accepted here, following C. C. Whittier's suggestion in The Urann Family of New England. No other parentage has been proposed. More information is needed to be sure he really fits."

11. Richard3 Uran (John2, Eleanor1 _____) was born 1686 in Portsmouth, NH?, and died January 13, 1776 in Newbury, MA. He married (1) Mehitable Corliss October 17, 1717 in Haverhill, MA, daughter of John Corliss and Mary Wilford. He married (2) Sarah Flood November 22, 1742 in Newbury, MA.

Notes for Richard Uran:
Birthdate is based on age at death of 90 years. That would put his birth between 14 jan 1684/85 and 13 jan 1685/86, 10 months before his father's second marriage and 19 months before that second wife should have had her first child. On the face of

     Notes for James Uran:
This is believed to be the James Uran who signed a petition to the Masonian
proprietors for a charter of Sutton, NH, and who drew lots 78 in the first
division and lot 50 in the second division of that town. The records of
Sutton state he was from Haverhill. Dates of the Sutton transactions need
to be reviewed, as they will establish the latest possible birthdate for him,
as well as the timing of the family's connection to Haverhill.

15. Joseph3 Uran (John2, Eleanor1 _____) was born Bef. 1696 in Greenland, NH?17, and died Aft. 1760 in Greenland, NH?18. He married (1) Sarah Perkins September 03, 1716 in Greenland, NH?19. He married (2) Rebecca _____ Bef. 1735 in Greenland, NH.

Notes for Joseph Uran:
On tax lists in Greenland district at Portsmouth, NH first in 1717, suggesting
he was born about 1696. He disappears from the tax lists after 1760. In a
deed dated 29sep1735, with his second wife Rebecca, he sold land in Greenland
"being part of my mother Rebecca Urin's thirds in the estate of my father John
Urin, deceased", thus establishing his parentage. Earlier that year he sold
land in Epsom, NH to Enoch Clark of Greenland. This may have been the Joseph
Youring whose upbringing is mentioned in Eleanor Urin's will in 1699.

Children of Joseph Uran and Rebecca _____ are:

     40      i.            Marcy4 Uran. She married Ichabod Whitten June 13, 1736 in Greenland, NH?20.

+      48      ix.            George Uran, born Abt. 1737 in Greenland, NH; died Aft. 1801.
16. James3 Uran (John2, Eleanor1 _____) was born Bef. 1700 in Portsmouth, NH, and died Abt. 1761 in Greenland, NH. He married (1) Rebecca _____. He married (2) Hannah Edgerly January 28, 1725 in Greenland, NH?21.

Notes for James Uran:
This family lived in the part of Portsmouth, NH that was set apart as
Greenland. The first book of Greenland records was lost by fire. He was
taxed there at least from 1743 to 1761, which is taken as an indication of
the time of his death. His birth date is estimated by reference to the
baptism of his first child and the fact that he was already married to his
second wife by that time. Perhaps other references can be found in
neighboring towns to further define the dates.

Children of James Uran and Hannah Edgerly are:

     49      i.            Jeney4 Uran.

+      50      ii.            Elizabeth Uran, died November 20, 1824 in Sandwich, NH?.

56      viii.            Paul Uran, born Bef. 1742 in Greenland, NH; died Aft. 1790 in Newmarket, NH?. He married Hannah _____.
17. Eleanor3 Uran (John2, Eleanor1 _____) was born Abt. 1700 in NH. She married (1) Diamond Currier. She married (2) Abraham Crockett April 22, 1735 in Isles of Shoals, NH22.

Notes for Eleanor Uran:
It is likely that Eleanor was born shortly after the death of her grandmother,
widow Eleanor Wilcomb (d. 1699). Eleanor Uran was admitted to the church at
Greenland in 1716. The only record of her children by her first husband,
Diamond Currier, is contained in the will of Nathaniel Lord of Gosport, 03 mar
1725/26. His wife was Elizabeth Diamond, widow of Thomas Currier and mother
of Diamond and Weymouth Currier. Lord gave 10 pounds to Diamond Currier's
son Richard.

Notes for Diamond Currier:
The unusual name is explained by the union of the Diamond and Currier families
of Star Island. His father was Richard Currier, his mother Elizabeth Diamond.
Some effort needs to be made to estimate his birth date, as this would tend to
put a lower limit on the birthdate of his wife Eleanor Uran. Town and church
records on Star Island begin only in 1732, so we are undoubtedly missing the
names of some children. There are so many Currier families in the Star
Island records as to make it impossible to sort them all out.

Child of Eleanor Uran and Diamond Currier is:

     57      i.            Richard4 Currier, born Bef. 1726.

Children of Eleanor Uran and Abraham Crockett are:

     58      i.            Elizabeth4 Crockett.

     59      ii.            Weymouth Crockett.
18. William3 Uran (Francis2, Eleanor1 _____) was born August 05, 1681 in Ipswich, MA, and died January 15, 1758 in Ipswich, MA. He married Martha Smith Abt. December 29, 1706 in Ipswich, MA23.

Notes for William Uran:
How he acquired the following land is not known: sold to Benjamin Damrill
of Isles of Shoals a house and garden spot on Star Island bounded on NW by
Deacon Muchamore, NE by land formerly belonging to Mr. Fabins, SE by Dymond's
garden, and SW by the sea, dated 25feb1745-46.

Children of William Uran and Martha Smith are:

     60      i.            Mary4 Uran, died January 07, 1713 in Ipswich, MA.

61      ii.            Francis Uran, died April 07, 1737 in drowned while fishing, Banks of Canso.

+      62      iii.            Mary Uran, died 1747 in Beverly, MA.

The story of Leonard Longanecker by Nancy Larsen
8/2/2008
Several days ago, I got an email from a total stranger, Monica M. (below), who had found a possible link between her half brother, Darryl, and our Uncle Jim Morgan’s granddaughter, Margaret Uran, who had a son named Vaughn. Uncle Jim was the brother of Martha Morgan Hauser and son of Hardin Morgan.
Monica had found our Margaret and Leonard Longanecker and their son, Vaughn listed in my Morgan family tree. She asked for any information that I might have. Her brother, Darryl had been trying to find information on possible siblings. Previously to this, he did not know about Vaughn.
I sent her all of the info I had, including the story from The Morgan Genealogy and everything that I had found while searching the many available databases. According to Monica, Leonard left Darryl’s mother (and her mother) and married Margaret Uran, Our cousin, Vaughn, was born in October of 1947, seven months after Darryl was born. Leonard had left at least one other son behind, prior to leaving Darryl and his mom.
And after a time, Leonard left Margaret and Vaughn. Monica discovered through various searches that he subsequently may have had two more wives and possibly three daughters (by the first of these two wives). This is still under investigation. As time went by, we both found more information. Vaughn is alive and living with his wife in Oregon, at the same address for many years.
Well, some stories have a happy ending. Monica called Vaughn’s home and has established contact with Darryl’s long lost brother, who has been looking for his siblings, too. According to later communications with Vaughn, he located his father, Leonard, prior to his death and has forgiven him. Vaughn and his family are very devoted Christians.
PS- 9/2008: Vaughn and Darryl have now met!!! See picture below.

Emails from Monica:

My name is Monica M. My mother’s name was P. S. Longanecker. She was married to Leonard Longanecker Jr. They had a son (my brother Darryl) born in March 1947. Len left my mom when she was pregnant with my brother. She did not know what happened to him.
I see that Len was married to a Margaret, who is part of your family tree. I know that Len also had a son who is older than my brother.

Thank you for your time.

I am not sure when Leonard and my mom were married. I know he married a woman named D. B. S. in Jan 1940 I found the vital record on ancestry.com as well as the vital recordfor a son born in Feb 1942. I think that his name is Cifford. My mom had a picture of him for years.

In Dec. 1946, Len dropped my older sisters and my mom at the movies in E. C., CA. He and my mom both worked at a mortuary. He told my mom that he had some work to do at the mortuary, that he would pick them up when the movie was over. They got out of the show and waited and waited for Len to pick them up. At the time E. C. was a small town. A police officer stopped and asked my mom if she and the girls needed a ride home. When they got home they found a note saying he was leaving. He took everything they owned. My brother Darryl was born on 9 March 1947. Leonard married Margaret on 25 Jan. 1947. He was still married to my mom.

My mom told me that sometime in the late 40’s a man who was a physician hired to private eye to try and find Len. She was told that he had married the doctor’s daughter (Margaret) and left her just like he did my mom. I found the wedding announcementfor Margaret and Len and it stated that she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Uran.

I found someone named M. J. M. married a Leonard Longanecker on 1 Oct 1955. I am not sure if it is the same man or not. They lived in Ohio and had 3 daughters D. S., born 23 Jan 1958, J. born 16 June 1959 and J. K., born 11 July 1960. He married a woman in California named C. W. on 17 July 1977.

When I got older I found out that my mom and dad had to wait years before they were legally married. She never could find Len to get a divorce and his family told my mom they had no idea where he was. So Leonard had three sons, C. D. born in 1942, my brother Darryl and Vaughn. I did not know for a long time that Darryl and I did not have the same dad.

I was also able to find Vaughn listed in Oregon. I called the number and spoke to his wife. She was very nice. She told me that they had been searching for any siblings that Vaughn might have. I will share any info I find out on Vaughn and his family with you.
I called Darryl and told him of my findings, he was so happy. I told him how you had helped me, he told me to tell you thank you. I need to run. I want to call my sisters C. and PO. and let them know what I found out. Take care, and thank you again.
Monica

JWH, p. 27-28: "Thomas, the younger, half-brother to Thomas, the elder. This Thomas was born in 1541 and was killed in 1589. In 1564 he was Sheriff of Lancashire. On the 21st of November, 1589, Thomas Langton, of Newton, commonly called the Baron of Walton and Newton, with a company of eight gentlemen and yeoman, armed themselves with "'Long Pickes' gunnes, long staves, daggers, bows and arrows, Welsh hookes upon long staves," and marched from Preston to Lea Hall, the seat of Thomas Hoghton, "to do him some displeasure,""being incited thereto by a pre-existing feud about some cattle." Thomas awaited the attack with some thirty friends, tenants, etc.
The watchword of Langton was, "The crow is white"; that of Hoghton was "Black is black." A desperate affray ensued in which Thomas Hoghton and Richard Waldroin, of Langton's company, were slain, but by whom does not appear. All the official documents respecting this affair are preserved in the British Museum, and are quite curious and interesting. Thomas Langton was arrested by the Earl of Derby, but it is said that he compounded with the Hoghton family by giving up Walton. At least Walton Le Dale has ever since remained in possession of the Hogthon family. This Thomas Hoghton built Hoghton Tower, during the reign of Queeen Elizabeth, from a quarry of stone in the hill on which the Tower stands. He married Anne, daughter of Henry Kighley, Esq. As Alexander left no issue, the younger Thomas succeeded to the estate.

Thomas had built Hoghton Tower in 1565 (see JWH, p. 28-32 for description), in Lancaster, earlier in the reign of Elizabeth."
