BiographyLowell Genealogy: "He res. in Washington, N.H., Putney, Vt., Moriah and Gainsville, N. Y. Sept. 17, 1784, he, of Washington, N.H., bought lots No. 23 and 26, in Putney, Vt., of William Proctor of Washington, N.H., paying £200. About 1831 he removed from Moriah to Gainsville, N.Y. At the same time some of his family, especially Nelson, went to Romeo, Mich. He was a farmer. 1796 he removed from Putney, Vt., to Pawlet, Vt., bought land and in 1804 sold it to David Hulett."

McCoy: son of Mary Blood (b. 9 Sep 1725, Groton, MA (Groton VR indicate daug. of Ebenezer and Abigail Blood)) and David Lowell (b. 12 Jan 1715/16, Haverhill, MA; Rev. War, Pvt, NH; d. a 1784, Putney, VT?). Family lived in New Ipswich, Hillsboro Co., NH?. However another ancestry for this family is proposed in 1886 History of Washington, NH, p. 519, indicating David as son of Ebenezer Lowell of "Groton, MA (?)" and brother of Simon and Peter lso of "Groton (?)."

McCoy: "Josiah Lowell comes to Putney from Washington, Cheshire Co., NH in 1784 when he buys two 50 acre lots (# 23 and 26) from William and Mary Proctor of Washington, Cheshire Co., NH, land in Putney, VT (17sep1784, Putney Deeds Vol. 1, p. 388). This deed is recorded immediately after the first deed of Jacob Lowell of Temple, NH, dated 02feb1787. Josiah is also recorded in the 1790 census of Putney, VT, and his marriage is recorded there the same year. In 1800 he is in the census of Pawlet. He has not been found in the 1810 census yet. Records of Pawlet, VT Congregational Church show Josiah Lowell received April 2, 1797, along with Sally Uran. On June 4, 1797, "wife of" Josiah Lowell received to membership. Deed in Bk. 5, p. 465, shows Josiah Lowell of Putney buying 2 parcels of David Gilmore of Pawlet, 15 jan1796. He sold this land in 1804 to David Hulett. Pawlet records contain a variety of other references (David marries Esther White of Middletown, 17jun1813, Jos. m. Phebe Ives 08dec1814, David buys land 1817) that might be his children or those of his brother David Lowell.

A list of members of the First Congregational Church of Pawlet dated 11 mar 1808 has surfaced in private hands. The transcript published in Branches and Twigs 13:137-138 (1984) shows Josiah Lowell and Sally Uran in excommunicated status as of that date, no other significant names are evident. The 1800 census shows 4 sons and 2 daughters, plus an extra adult woman in the household.

Josiah sold his land in Putney to Abel Hubbard on January 1, 1796 (Putney deeds, vol. 3, p 235). His neighbor to the east was Capt. Grindal Reynolds, and to the west, Jacob Lowell (leased to his father Moses Lowell).

At some time after 1800, he moved to Moriah, NY, and in 1831 moved to Gainesville, NY."3,2

Whittier: "In the census of 1790 he was the only one in family; may have been that James Urin who was given pension 3 Oct. 1835, aged 73 years."

McCoy: "Pension File: S14745, lived at Putney, VT at time of enlistment, 1779, served in various units based at Putney. He moved to Pawlet, VT 27feb1787, lived there until 04jun1821, when he moved to Dorset, VT. This account, from the actual deposition, does not agree with the NGS Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Appls. Deed records such as Pawlet VT bk. 7 p. 113 indicate he lived in Pawlett (1812) or at least owned land there (as early as 1804, when he sells 24 acres to Ozias Clark, buying it back in 1807). Death date not established..."

McCoy: "It is possible that James had more than one wife, but at least one was Lucy attested by deed of 1820, Pawlet, VT. By 1820, James and Lucy had no children living with them. 1810 census indicates a son and daughter b. bef. 1800, though only a son is shown on 1800 census (with an additional adult male, perhaps James' brother Jonathan?). 1830 census shows clearly Jeremiah Uran (Rupert, Bennington Co., VT) but 1840 shows Jeremiah Urin with same assortment of children. Enlisted at Harvard Ma as a Private in May of 1777 in the Massachusetts militia and was at the Battles of Bunker Hill and Stillwater. On this sixth day of May 1818 Before me the subscriber one of the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court of said Commonwealth personally appears Elisha Houghton aged sixty eight years resident in the town of Adams in said district who being by me first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the late act of congress entitled `an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the revolutionary war ‘ that the said Houghton enlisted as a private in May 1778 in the town of Harvard in the state of Massachusetts in the company commanded by Captain Joshua Brown of the fifteenth Regiment of commanded by Col. Timothy Bigelow.That he continued in the service of the United States until May 1781 when he was discharged from service
at West Point in the State of Newyork. That he was in the Battles of Bunker Hill Stillwater Monmouth and Newport and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his possession of his said services and relinquishes all claim to any other Pension but what he now asks for.

Elisha Houghton aged 71 years, resident in Adams in the County of Berkshire aforesaid, who being first duly sworn, according to law,doth on his oath declare, that he served in the revolutionary war as follows; that he enlisted in the company commanded by Captain Brown in the regiment commanded by Colonel Bigelow in the line of the State of Massachusetts on the Continental establishment. That his original declaration is dated May 6th 1818 and that his pension certificate is numbered 4,189.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed the seal of said Court on this ninth day of August 1820.

The text above the first fold appears to be an earlier version of Justice Samuel Putnam's certification of Elisha's testimony. Apparently he decided to
write it on the bottom of the first side instead. He didn't sign this version:

"I do certify that it appears to my satisfaction that the said Elisha Houghton did serve in the revolutionary war as stated in the within declaration against the common enemy and I now transmit the procedings and testimony taken and had before me to the secretary for the department of war
pursuant to the directions of the (illegible) out of Congress-"

The second panel served as a cover to the document when it was folded up. As such the writing is at a right angle to the rest of the page:

The third and fourth panels are statements by two witnesses as to the character of Elisha Houghton and the truth of his story.

(“District of” crossed out) Berkshires of Commonwealth of Massachusetts.On this sixth day of May 1818 Before me the subscriber one of the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court of said Commonwealth personally appears Elisha Houghton aged sixty eight years resident in the town of Adams in said district who being by me first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to
obtain the provisions made by the late act of congress entitled `an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the revolutionary war ` that the said Houghton enlisted as a private in May 1778 in the town of Harvard in the state of Massachusetts in the company commanded by Captain Joshua Brown of the fifteenth Regiment of commanded by Col. Timothy Bigelow.That he
continued in the service of the United States until May 1781 when he was discharged from service at West Point in the State of Newyork. That he was in the Battles of Bunker Hill Stillwater Monmouth and Newport and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his possession of his said services and relinquishes all claim to any other Pension but what he now asks for.

ResearchJan Beebe: "I have had the info on Elisha Houghton and his marriages to both Moriah Pierce and Elizabeth Rice for ages but don't have the proof that Elisha is one and the same.  Same thing with him being the son of Ephraim.  Though I highly suspect that the lineage is correct.  By the way Elisha was not a Captain in the RW.  I have checked the Edmund Rice book for Elizabeth and haven't come up with anything concrete on her either.  I have also climbed the hills in the cemetery at North Adams and written to the town clerk to no avail.  They have no record of either Elisha, Relief or my Goyer family. "
