Biography

Rev. Robert Campbell, Jr., was born on 23 April 1709 in County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland.2,3,4

Rev. Robert Campbell, Jr., died on 19 February 1789 in Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York, at age 79.4 He was buried in Yellow Meeting House Cemetery, Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York.4
Rev. Robert Campbell, Jr., emigrated with Robert Campbell, the Emigrant, and Janet Campbell circa 1714 in Ulster, Ireland to Boston, Massachusetts, Robert came to the county with his parents and says: "When I was five [1714] my father and mother brought me with their family to Boston, Mass, and thence to New London. There they lived eight years [until 1722]. From there we came to Voluntown, May 1722. My father died in 1724 and in his sickness willed me all his land," Which did not hold owing to some technical item regarding the witness.5,6,7

Poem by Rev. Robert Campbell:
In Ireland, 1709, my being did commence.
In 1714 I was removed thence.
In 1724, my beloved Father died,
Making all his property o'er [to me]
That all my wants be supplied.
America, wild and distant land
Was doomed to br the scene
Where I must learn that I did stand
A Hell and Heaven between, etc., etc.3

Rev Robert married April 13, 1727, Mary McMains (Voluntown Vital Record1-11) daughter of Daniel and Janet McMains. She died July 29, 1763, and Rev. Robert married 2nd Hannah Spaulding, who was born Nov 6, 1712 (Bible Records of Robert Campbell).

Rev Robert was called to the pastorate of the Congregational Church Canaan, Conn, Jan 13, 1761, and was ordained and installed Oct 20, 1761. In April 1762, the Church held a fast to know their duty about removing to Stillwater, Albany [Saratoga] Co., NY, which place was designated as desirable for settlement by the Committee went out to investigate.

According to "Genealogy of the Desc. of the John Thomas of New Haven," Robert Campbell, Jr was born about 1709; this agrees with the article "William Rogers of Voluntown, CT...," NEHGS "Register," Vol 147, pg. 115. A specific date of birth of 23 April 1709 is given in "Robert Campbell Genealogy," Rev. Frederic Campbell, 1909, pg. 50, copied from notes written by Rev. Campbell himself in a pocket bible.

Robert was among those who split from Rev. Dorrance's church in Voluntown in a schism in 1745; he joined the Congregational Church in Plainfield, CT from which he was received into membership in the Church of Christ at Canaan, Litchfield Co., CT in 1760. This Canaan church moved to Stillwater, NY in April, 1762. Prior to the move, Robert had been called as pastor 13 Jan. 1761 and ordained 20 Oct. 1761. ("William Rogers of Voluntown, CT...," NEHGS "Register," Vol 147, pg. 115.) Also see History of Saratoga County, New York, by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, 1878, Chapter 33, Stillwater, Part 2, posted online at: [http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysarato/Sylvester/chap33.html]. According to The History of the Town of Stillwater, it became known as the Congregational Church of Stillwater and the Yellow Meeting House of Stillwater and Rev. Robert is buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church.
