The Tuesday, January 29, 1974, edition of the Batavia (Genesee County, New York) Country Post carried the following story about the 100th birthday of Edith Van Slyke Scott:

One of thirteen children and still in good health and active with many hobbies, Edith Scott of Perry [Wyoming County, New York] will soon [4 February 1974] celebrate her 100th birthday. Born on a farm in 1874, she and a twin sister were raised in a family of 13 children. Mrs. Scott recalls starting work as a domestic at the age of 10, working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, for $2.00. For recreation, she delighted in fishing from bountiful streams near her home and playing dominoes.
She and her husband, who died in 1952, were married in 1892, in Pike. They had two children, Elgie Thomas [Scott], now 80, and Yale Scott, now 67, with whom Mrs. Scott now resides. Her children have presented her with 11 grandchildren, 31 great granchildren, and 19 great-great grandchildren.
Among Mrs. Scott's pasttimes are sewing, collecting buttons, braiding rugs and playing cards. Her button collection consists of over 18,000 rare and colorful buttons; by arranging them on velvet, she creates unique and artistic designs. During her busy day, Mrs. Scott manages to keep abreast of current events by viewing her "favorite" television program, the news.
