Emma Stratton Houghten
Emma was bom November 20, 1931 at her parents’ home in Orem Utah. She was the eighth and youngest child of James George and Nina Snow Vance Stratton. She attended Orem schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947. She went on to study at Brigham Young University.
Emma met Stanley Augustus Houghton at church. She claimed that 'bells went off when she saw him across the chapel. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 13,1952. They made their home in Orem in the home that Stanley, known to all as Bob, had helped build. Into this home they welcomed children Laura, Stanley Jr.. Emma, Ann and Dale.
After having her family. Emma went back to school to finish her degree in art. She taught art for several years at Dixon Jr. High. She loved the art studio Bob finished for her, and through the years produced beautiful pottery, paintings and ceramics. She shared her gifts and love of art with family, friends and community. She and Bob loved to find interesting clays on their outings to try as glazes for her pottery.
Emma was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings and responsibilities. She especially enjoyed visiting teaching and music for children and adults. She had a great gift of giving, and sharing was a way of life for her.
Family was everything to Emma. She loved to have her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren visit. She was always close to her siblings. Her nieces and nephews were very important to her and brought her joy. She is remembered for her parties at holiday and birthday times.
Emma was predeceased by her husband in 1994. Her daughter, Laura, also passed away in 1997. She is survived by Laura’s husband Steve (Isabel) Christiansen. Houston. Texas: Stanley Jr. (Merilee), Woodland Hills, Utah; Emma (Curtis) Call. North Yarmouth. Maine: Ann (Bill) Howard. Cordova, Alaska: and Dale (SherRon), Heber City, Utah. She has 26 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren. She has 46 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her Stratton siblings and inlaws; Nanalee Stratton, Provo: Janet Stratton, Orem; Dorothy (Kent) Fielding, Higganaum. Connecticut; Herbert (Susan) Stratton. California; Vern (JoAnn) Stratton Orem.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 19, at 11 a.m. at the Cascade 3rd Ward chapel, 1050 East 200 North. Orem.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, November 18 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home located at 646 East 800 North Orem, and at the church Orem just prior to the funeral service from 9:00-10:30. Burial will be at the Orem City Cemetery.
