Philadelphia, PA, USA, George M Haughton Sr. 75. a man of diverse interests who directed a church choir, played music, served in World War II. taught school and sold milk tanks and industrial equipment. died last Thursday at Friends Hall in West Chester. Mr. Haughton. who lived in West Chester, played the trumpet and sang in many of Chester County's churches He and his wife. Helen Pollvka Haughton. were members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of West Chester for 42 years. He directed the choir there for 10 years He also served the church as a deacon and elder. During the last three years, he and his wife were members of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester.
Mr Haughton played trumpet and served as emcee for the Lukens German Band, which performed at community events and rest homes. From 1985 until his death, he was president of the band. "He really enjoyed doing that." said Helen Haughton. "He liked playing for the children." Mr Haughton served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a first lieutenant Upon his discharge in 1946. Mr Haughton enrolled In West Chester University and graduated in 1949 with degrees in English and music. In 1950 he taught those subjects in middle school in Montoursville. near Williamsport. In the subsequent three years he taught In middle school in the Warwick School District. which is now part of the Owen J Roberts School District. Finding il difficult to make ends meet on a teacher's salary. Mr. Haughton took a sales Job with Esco Cabinet Co. of West Chester, which sold milk tanks to dairy farmers. Mr Haughton continued to give private music lessons fur many years. In 1962 he Joined Schramm Inc. of West Chester, which sold heavy industrial equipment, and became a regional sales manager He retired in 1984
Mr. Haughton was born In Summit Hill. Pa., the son of Edwin Mitchell and Mary Boyd Haughton. He was a member of the AARP and a former member of the West Goshen Lions Club and the West Chester Elks Club. In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by two sons. George M Jr. and James E; a daughter. Nancy J. Pflasterer; a sister, a brother; and seven grandchildren.
