Edis Adeline (Hatch) Betts

KENNEBUNK — Edis Adeline (Hatch) Betts, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009.

She was born July 22, 1917 on a ranch in Chandler, Neb., first child of Robert Delbert Hatch and Ellen Etta Stewart Hatch. She was educated in the public schools of Sterling, Colo. She graduated from Logan County Industrial Arts High School in Logan County, Colo., in 1934. She graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.S. in business in 1938. She was an active member in both high school and college as a cellist, playing in quartets and as a soloist.

She taught one year in Hot Sulphur Springs, Colo., and two years in Fountain, Colo. She moved to New York City in 1941 where she was employed at the R. H. Macy flagship store, first as a personnel manager then as a purchasing agent. On June 19, 1943, she married James T. Houghton Jr., an Amherst College graduate. He was the convention manager for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. To this union were added Christopher Stewart Houghton, on Nov. 21, 1945; Alexander Greer Houghton, on Jan. 31, 1947; Heather Edis Houghton, on Dec. 20, 1949; and Pamela Victoria Houghton, on June 28, 1951.

In 1964, Edis began teaching elementary school in the Enfield (Conn.) public school system from which she retired in 1982. She also continued to play first cello in the Holyoke (Mass.) community orchestra, during which time she earned two masters degrees. In 1980, she was divorced from James Houghton. She married Edward Betts on Dec. 20, 1986.

One sister, Lola Jane Hatch Sayre, predeceased her.

She is survived by her children, Christopher Stewart Houghton, of Superior, Colo., Alexander Greer Houghton, of Granada Hills, Calif., Heather Edis Houghton, of Louisville, Colo., and Pamela Victoria Houghton, of North Hills, Calif; four grandchildren, Jennifer Houghton Webster, Theodore Petcu, Madeline Petcu and Chloe Celeste Houghton; and three nieces and nephews, Susan Sayre Ieuder, Terry Sayre and Robert Sayre; stepchildren, Peter Betts, of Parkman, Maine, John Betts, of New York City, and Wendy Betts Lyon, of Dryden, N.Y; and five step-grandchildren, Jennifer Betts, Stephanie Lyon, Whitney Lyon, Sean Lyon, and Anastasia Lyon.
