Deceased Name: Elizabeth J. Houghton Known for book about Marblehead
Elizabeth J. "Beth" Houghton, of Marblehead and Seattle, Wash., died October 23, 2007, at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, after a brief illness.

Born in Marlboro, November 7, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Gerard and Marian (Bennett) Houghton. She was the youngest of six children.

Ms. Houghton moved to Seattle last year, but she also kept her home in Marblehead, where she was very active. A member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Marblehead, she was a key participant in the 2001 publication of the book "Discovering Marblehead."

She attended Northeastern and Harvard universities and earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from Bentley College.

Her varied positions, including posts at Groove and Raytheon in Massachusetts and her yen for travel and personal adventure took her to many places and into many fields, including a brief stint in Baghdad in 2006.

Ms. Houghton is survived by three sisters, Sara McNeil of Warner, N.H., Linda Dodge of New Bern, N.C. and Anne Whittenbury of Australia; a brother, Donald Houghton of Bucksport, Maine; and 15 nieces and nephews. She was also the younger sister of the late Charles Houghton.

Her life and her many accomplishments will be celebrated Sunday, November 11, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead.

A similar celebration was held November 4 with the Unitarian Universalist community in West Seattle, Wash.
