Raymond B. Houghton HARTLAND A memorial service for- Rsymond B. Houghton, 70, who died Sunday In Mount Ascutney Hospital, will be held Friday at 7 p.m. In the Hartland Congregational Church with the Rev. Susanna Friefen, pastor, officiaUng. A reception will follow. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock at a later date. Mr. Houghton was born May 1, 1813, in Woodstock, ion of Owen B. and Edith (Burdett) Houghton. A 1832 graduate of Woodstock High School, his first employment was with the First National Stores. In 1843 he purchased the Central Market, expanding it in 1853 into the first supermarket in Woodstock. Retiring in 1968 from the retail grocery buaineaa, he became a milk tester for the D.H.I.A. He also sold seed corn for the DeKalb Corn Co. A past president of the Woodstock Rotary Club, be was secretary for eight yean and had a perfect attendence for more than 34 years. He wai a member of Woodstock Lodge 31, FitAM, Woodstock Chapter 42, and was active in the Calvin Coolidge Council, Boy Scouts of America. While living in Wooditock he was a member of (he First Congregational Church, nerving as a deacon. He was a member of the Hartland Congregational Church. Survivors Include his wife, Frances (Rutherford) Houghton; a son, Owen Houghton of Jeffrey, N.H; three daughters, Mrs. Deborah Berryman of Norwich, Gail Houghton-Tennant of Berkley, Calif., and Ellen Sutherland of Box Elder, S.D; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Park of East Randolph; a brother, Everett Houghton of Woodstock; and 10 grandchildren. Friends may call at the Cabot Funeral Home In Woodstock Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic aervice will beheld at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Room Fund at Mount Aicutney Hospital or the Hartland Congregational Church.

HARTLAND - Frances "Frankie" (Rutherford) Houghton, 90, died Aug. 7, 2003, at the Village at Cedar Hill in Windsor.

She was born Sept. 22, 1912, in Woodstock, the daughter of David and Ollie (White) Rutherford.

She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1931.

She worked as a waitress at the White Cupboard Inn, clerk and assistant manager/owner of Central Market and Houghton's Red & White, and in her later years, worked at Dana Insurance.

Mrs. Houghton was a member of the First Congregational Church in Woodstock and the Friendly Circle. After moving to Hartland, she was a member of the First Congregational Church in Hartland, life member deacon, and Ladies Benevolent Society. She was a volunteer at Mount Ascutney Hospital, Advisory Council for RSVP, the Hartland Elementary School, Hartland Neighbors, Stoughton House and the Hartland Library.

Survivors include a son, Owen Houghton of Jaffrey, N.H; three daughters, Deborah Berryman of Wilder, Gail Tennant of Berkeley, Calif., and Ellen Sutherland of Anchorage, Alaska; 11 grandchildren and three great - grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Houghton in 1983; and three brothers, Tom, Dick and Harry Rutherford.

The memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hartland Congregational Church with the Rev. Robert Moyer officiating. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the First Congregational Church of Hartland, Hartland, 05048, or a favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.³

Rutland, VT, USA, Evan R. Houghton WINDSOR The funeral service for Evan R. Houghton, 68, who died Tuesday at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H., will be held at It a.m. Friday at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The Rev. Pamela Lucas will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bridgewater. He was bom Feb. 10, 1922, in Brid- fewater, son of Karl and Jean (Earle) loughton. He received his schooling in Bridgewater and Woodstock. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 194 1. He was married to Maijorie E. Whitman on March 10, 1949, in Woodstock. Mr. Houghton was employed at the Bridgewater Woolen Mill and at the Cone Automatic Machine Co. in Windsor for eight years and for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Windsor for 20 years before retiring. He was a member of B.P.O.E. 1665 in Windsor. Survivors include his wife of Windsor, three sons, Wayne Wardwell of Spring-field, Elwin H. Houghton of Hartland and Roy H. Houghton of Windsor; five daughters, Ellen Mqjor of Woodbridge, Va., Susan Holmes and Melanie Minard, both of Windsor. Pamela Hoffinaster of Linden, Va., and Penelope VanWeort of Plattsburgh, N.Y; a brother, Royal Houghton of Ascutney; a sister, Ruth Needham of Bridgewater; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Plymouth. She was raised in Plymouth and as a child lived at the Coolidge Farm.

She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1940.

She was married to Gordon Wardwell in 1943 in Bridgewater. He died in 1945. She was married to Evan R. Houghton in Woodstock on March 10, 1949. He died in 1990.

Mrs. Houghton worked as a telephone operator in Bridgewater during World War II. More recently she had worked at the Valley News in Lebanon as a carrier for 26 years. She also volunteered for the Share Program in Windsor.

Survivors include two sons, Elwin H. Houghton of Hartland and Roy H. Houghton of Windsor; five daughters, Ellen Major of Woodbridge, Va., Susan Holmes and Melanie Minard, both of Windsor, Penny VanWeort of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Pam Hoffmaster of Linden, Va; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Wayne Wardwell, in 1995.

The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor by the Rev. Janice Chilek, pastor of the Bridgewater Congregational Church. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bridgewater.

Friends may call Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In December 2007, Governor Lynch appointed Dr. Owen R. Houghton Chairperson of the State Committee
on Aging (SCOA).
Houghton represents Cheshire County and was first appointed to SCOA in 2005. Says Houghton, “I am an advocate for aging wellness and a promoter of prevention for all ages and stages. I am particularly interested in extending SCOA’s mission to ALL older residents of New Hampshire on the issues we face daily in our aging journey. As an educator, I believe in teaching folks how to manage their life challenges, and not just giving them services.” Houghton is Chair of the Cheshire Association Committee on Church and Ministry UCC, and serves on the Board of the Jaffrey Civic Center, the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce, the Historical Society, Rotary, the Jaffrey Community Center, and The Monadnock Senior Advocates (the Area Committee on Aging in the Monadnock Region). He also coaches golf for Franklin Pierce University in Rindge. Houghton lives with his wife Norma in a home designed for “our next 25 years” enjoying grandchildren, RV van travel, skiing and the many joys of a uality life in the Monadnock region.
