DeathFeb 15, 1913Ashkum, Iroquois Co., IL, USA3
ParentsSJames and Jennie Gordon3
BiographyBrandt: His parents are of English and Scotch descent, his father born in England, his mother in Scotland. James I. Gordon was the oldest in a family of 4 children, the others being Henry & Joseph, twins, and a sister Nancy. On June 1850, with his sister Nancy, James Gordon sailed from England and seven weeks later arrived in New York City. It is believed that Nancy died in Brooklyn, NY, as no further record can be found. A record of deposition, dated Apr 9, 1857, at Albany NY shows he was a resident of the United States, intended to always resident in the US and to become a citizen thereof, as soon as he could become naturalized. Apparently he never completed the proceedings in Albany NY as he lived in Livingston and Genessee counties, NY, until 1857, when he came to IL, settling in first in Wesley Twp, Will Co., IL. About 1863, he removed to Ashkum, IL, where he spent the remainder of his life. Naturalization records of Kankakee Co., IL, Circuit Court, show that on Sep 9, 1868, he renounced the Queen of England and became a citizen of the United States. He was a very empathic Republican, a school director, a member of the Ashkum Methodist Episcopal Church, a charter member of the Clifton Masonic Lodge #688 and a farmer and a landowner3
