George Houghton Rev. Geo. Houghton, the son of Mr and Mrs. Stephen Houghton was born in Lyons, Walworth County, Wisconsin on September 20, 1847 and departed this life at Eldora, on January 17, 1829 at the age of 81 years, 3 months, 27 days.
His father died while the children were quite young so he being the eldest child greatly aided his mother in keeping the home together.
At about the age of 22 years he was converted and united with the Baptist church of Spring Pririe, Wis. Shortly after this he felt the call of God to preach His Gospel so he at once made preparations for his educatonal training. He first attended Shurtless college at Alta, Ill. After being graduated from this he received his theological training at the Divinity school of Chicago University.
His first pastorate was the Eldora Baptist church which he never ceased to love. He served this church as pastor from June 1878 to August 1, 1879.
Aon April 24, 1880 he was united in marriage to Miss Ella A. Stowe at Eldora. To this union were born 3 daughters, Lou, Nellie and Emma.
Other pastorates which he served were at Malta, Il; Camanche, Iowa; Nevada, IA; Delaware, Iowa; Woodbine, Iowa, and Farmington, Iowa.
Thier remains to mourn his departure his widow, Mrs. Ella Houghton; three daughters, Mrs. Lou Houghton Armstrong of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; Mrs. Nellie O. Kinsey of Chicago; Mrs. Emma Johnson of New Providence; one brother, Edgar Houghton of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Lew Roland of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Clara Evans of Eagle, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren besides many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and were conducted by the Rev. Cary R. Moser. Burial was made in the Eldora Cemetery.¹⁵

I have finally found the genealogical narrative written by my great grandfather, George Houghton, in 1920. It is clear from this narrative that he was unaware of the Houghton Genealogy written in 1912. It has a wealth of information about George and his father, Stephen Houghton, and includes photos and handwritten letters of family members. Unfortunately I have a poor quality copy (probably made from multiple other copies), so the photos will not reproduce well and letters are difficult to read. Nonetheless, it is a fascinating document and I will get a copy of it to you, if you wish.

George Houghton was, for the time and place, a well educated man having graduated first from Shurtleff College in Alta, IL and later from the Chicago University Divinity School. He was a Baptist minister. He was also a good writer. In the beginning of his narrative he makes a supposition that his family is descended from one of two brothers, Edward and Henry Houghton, who arrived in this country around 1700. It is also clear from the narrative that this information was entirely the product of the family's oral tradition. I like that George is quite clear in differentiating fact from conjecture. He believes (in 1920) that he is descended from Henry Houghton, however, he lets the reader know that he has no evidence to prove that. The earliest documented evidence that he presents is information from a family Bible. To quote the narrative, "The beginning of written records is found in my grandfather Houghton's Bible. It is in his handwriting and gives the names of his father's family, children only. The beginning then is with Henry Houghton. The date of birth, marriage and death of Henry Houghton is not given. His wife's name, age, birth and death are to me unknown. But the date of birth of their children are fully recorded, but nothing else.⁶

Hazlehurst - Arthur Ainslie Houghton, 86, who passed quietly on January 14, 2006 after a short illness.

He was born in West Woodstock, VT. He was the son of the late Earl Houghton and Verna Merril.

After graduating from High School he joined the conservation core. Prior to the outbreak of WW II, he enlisted in the U.S. Nay. He served on the aircraft carriers "USS Randolph" and the "USS Ranger" for six years as a chief machinist mate. He met and married Helen Ursrey, his lifelong companion, while on leave. He later continued his military career in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Captain.

After his discharge he attended college on the G.I. Bill, graduating from Mercer University and the New Orleans Theological Seminary. He pastored several southern churches, the largest being First Baptist in Saris, MS. and West End Baptist in Gadsden, AL.

He left the ministry in 1964 to begin a career with the GA. Dept. of Vocational Rehabilitation working in Savannah and later in Baxley prior to his retirement in 1986.

He and his wife enjoyed travel with their motor home and vacationing with their sons. He was a kind, gentle man and kept his good humor to the end. He spent a lifetime preparing for Heaven and has finally achieved his dream.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Helen Ursrey Houghton; a brother, Mr. Dwight Evan Houghton and wife Norma of West Hatford, VT; a sister, Mrs. Sandy Wilder of Cottonwood, CA; three sons, Robert of Brunswick, GA, David of Savannah and Herb of Richmond Hill; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 6-9 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday in the Chapel of Miles Funeral Home.

WEST WOODSTOCK—(Special) — Mrs. Verna H. Houghton, 66. of West Woodstock, died Tuesday night in Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H.. of injuries suffered June 23 in a Windsor auto crash.
Also fatally injured in the collision on Rte. 5 was Mrs. Houghton's daughter. Mrs. Alice A. Thompson. 35. of Woodstock, who was dead on arrival at Windsor Hospital. Driver of the car was another daughter. Miss Melba Houghton, police reported. Miss Houghton is still in Mary ' Hitchcock Hospital.
Police said the driver of the other car in the collision was Donald Burke. 17, of Brownsville. who suffered minor injuries. -
Mrs. Houghton was born in Dummerston March 18. 1896. a daughter of Ernest and Emma (Brown) Merrill.
