"The brave have always defined what the rest wish to be – USMC"

Clarence Ray Houghton, 82, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011, after succumbing to cancer. He was surrounded by the love of his family, God and his many friends. Ray was born July 8, 1928, in Three Sands, Okla., to Clifford and Connie McGee Houghton. As the second child of five, he lived in the oil fields of Oklahoma and then in California.?
Ray joined the U.S. Marine Corps Aug. 5, 1946. After boot camp at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, he attended sea school. He was stationed on the Antietam and was one of the first units deployed to Japan, then Korea. He landed in Wonsan Korea and after several stops along the way, he fought at the Chosin Reservoir. He served in World War II and the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division and was honorably discharged in 1954.
Ray married "the prettiest little thing he'd ever seen, with her black hair and green eyes," Betty Salois on Nov. 25, 1947. They raised three children, Don, Robyn and Candi. Ray and Betty made their home in Montana living in Conrad, Great Falls, and Glasgow, finally making Bozeman their permanent home for the past 47 years.??
Ray was a man of many talents, and worked in many different fields from welding to long-haul truck driving. He became a member of the Montana Highway Patrol in 1960 and was stationed in Great Falls, Glasgow and finally Bozeman in 1964. He taught self-defense to the new recruits at Fort Harrison in Helena. He served our state for 20 years until his retirement, then he worked another 11 years for Driver's Services in Bozeman. After retirement, Ray continued to work driving bus for Karst Stage. He particularly loved taking the sports teams to their games and transporting the Marine Corps Band and Silent Drill Team when they performed at Montana State University and even brought them home for dinner. He was a skilled carpenter and created many beautiful pieces that will be treasured by those honored enough to have one.?
Ray was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 18 in Bozeman and Bagdad Shrine Center, plus many other Masonic bodies. As a Shriner, he worked with the Shriner's Hospitals for Children to bring medical care to those in need.
Ray is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; sister, Myrna Barker, of Idaho, and brother, Joe (Jettie) Houghton, of California. Also, his children Don (Donna), of Belgrade, Robyn Ross (John), of Billings, Candi McClue (Dick), of Phoenix; grandchildren, Michael Houghton (Wendy), of Manhattan, Kevin McClue, of Phoenix, Jennifer Johnson (Neil), of Billings, Lynsey Lund (Chris), of Billings, Donnie King, of Belgrade, Loretta Dunning (Bruce), of Belgrade, Ed King (Nancee), of Great Falls, Darcy Gee (Butch), of Manhattan, Jeanne Zindler, of Bozeman, Donna McClue of, Phoenix, James McClue, of Albuquerque, and Kelly Hart (Jim), of Helena; also the loves of his life – his 18 great-grandchildren, including Mason, Jonas, Calvin, Julia, Aria, Jacob, and Angel; along with numerous extended family members and friends.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Pat Houghton; sister, Myra Lander, and granddaughter, Janice King Gustafson.
The family would like to extend many thanks to Keven Comer, FNP, who was incredibly understanding, patient and caring; Hospice of Southwest Montana for all their support; and especially the caring staff at Spring Creek Inn who treated Dad with dignity, humor and love. At his request cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Bozeman United Methodist Church on the corner of Willson Avenue and Olive Street. A reception will follow at the Masonic Lodge. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, or the charity of your choice.?Your presence in our lives as a husband, father, grandfather and friend leaves a deep hole in our hearts. We love you and will be together again. Dad always said there is no such thing as a former Marine -- Once a Marine, Always a Marine. Oohrah, Dad, and Semper Fi!!

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. www.dokkennelson.com
