Jun 17, 1933 – Aug 26, 2015

Lee Paul Houghton, 82, a longtime resident of Kent, WA, died peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, August 26, 2015.

He was born in E. Arlington, Vermont on June 17, 1933, the son of the late William J Houghton and Mary (Blyther) Houghton. He was a 1951 graduate of Arlington High School, and attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, graduating in 1954.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954, he served 1 1/2yrs in Korea as a Private First Class before being honorably discharged in 1956.

Lee returned to Vermont after leaving the Army to marry his childhood sweetheart, Kathleen Knapp, on Feb. 25, 1956. After their wedding, the couple drove cross-country for their honeymoon, arriving in Seattle, WA. Lee worked for Boeing in the machine shop and Kay was an R.N. at Group Health Hospital. The couple subsequently had two daughters, Tanya and Deena.

While working at Boeing, he returned to college and graduated from Highline Community College in SeaTac, WA in 1971, and from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA in 1973, with a B.A. in Business and Marketing.

After graduating from UPS, Lee obtained a job with Hallidie Machinery Co. in Seattle, where he was a salesman, and in 1981, became sales manager and vice-president of the company.

He retired from Hallidie in 1999, and became an independent representative for several different machine companies.

Lee enjoyed many different sports especially golfing, skiing, biking, hiking and traveling around the world. He loved skiing and biking with his oldest daughter Tanya and her family, and he enjoyed numerous trips around the world with his youngest daughter, Deena. He was also a devoted animal lover and had many pets throughout his life.

He was a member of Christian Faith Center and loved the Lord. Lee served the Lord through loving and helping people. He always had a ready smile for anyone he would meet, and he loved to laugh. Lee exemplified what it meant to be a true "people person.” His greatest joy was being with his family.

He spent the last four years of his life at Young at Heart Adult Family Home in Puyallup, WA. "Uncle Lee"/"Papa" received excellent care from the staff and was loved by all.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and his wife Kathleen, who died on July 9, 1983.

He is survived by his daughters Tanya Richards and Deena Houghton, his son-in-law Jearl Richards, three grandchildren: Kaylee Richards (Cook), Carsten Richards and Quade Richards, a great granddaughter, Kinley Cook and numerous extended family members.

Gifts in Lee's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

ObituaryAug 17, 2010BERLIN - Paul Edward Houghton Sr. peacefully passed away at his home in Berlin on Aug. 15, 2010. Born in East Montpelier on June 14, 1926, to Guy and Jennie (Locke) Houghton, he attended elementary and middle schools in Franconia, N.H. He was a sargeant in the U.S. Army, serving in France and Germany. He was wounded in Germany and received the Purple Heart. He was working on Boca Grande, Fla. when he met Mary Polk. They were married on April 15, 1948. He recently said that if he had his life to live over, there's a lot he would change, but not the person he married. Their union has lasted 62 years.

After working as a school bus driver and custodian on Boca Grande, he took a job with First National Groceries. He was transferred to Littleton, N.H. and then to Montpelier in 1952. After the chain closed, he worked in central Vermont for many years as painter and carpenter until he retired in 1991.

Paul was a loving father to their children, David, Jean Ann and Paul Jr. He and Mary also raised their two nephews, Norman and Michael Scolaro. Paul loved the outdoors; he enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing with his children and grandchildren, and always had lovely flower and vegetable gardens.

Paul was an American patriot, proud to have been born on Flag Day and to have served his country. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion, and always flew a flag at his home. Among the highlights in recent years was a trip to Washington, DC to attend the dedication of the World War II memorial in 2004.

In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by his sister, Helen Burlock of Vergennes, five children: David Polk and his partner, Sandra Davis of Defuniak Springs, FL, Jean Ann and Fred DeMag of Greensboro, Paul Houghton, Jr. of Barre, Norman and Diane Scolaro of Calais, and Michael and Diane Scolaro of Montpelier; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is predeceased by four brothers George, Wesley, Carroll and Leonard.

Calling hours will be held on Friday evening, August 20th from 6-8 pm at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier. A graveside service with military honors will take place on Saturday, August 21st at 11:00 am at the Berlin Corners Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641 or American Legion Post 3, 21 Main Street, Montpelier, VT 05602.

Those wishing to express online condolences may do so at www.guareandsons.com.

My mom was a very talented artist who enjoyed painting; she did water colors, oil, pastel and charcoal drawing as well as pencil drawing.

A few of my favorite pictures my mom had done when I was a child was her drawing and oil painting of the last supper, she also did a charcoal drawing of the last supper, which she gave both as gifts.

My mom also had drawn many New England bridges and log cabins scenes, sometimes from recall. I will always cherish the memories of watching my mom take a blank canvas and making it come to life.

My mom's favorite past time was playing bingo, she enjoyed being with her friends and making new friends, and she was always there to give a helping hand to anyone who was in need. My mother was very loved by all who knew her.

My mother was a woman of valor; I admired her steadfastness in the face of enduring pain that was relentless on her aging body and eventually took her life.

The last few years of my mom's life were very hard on her, she had health conditions that would get worse over time.

My mom had three blocked arteries that could not be touched by conventional methods; her only chance of unblocking them was a new procedure the doctors were waiting on to come out.

My mom had waited two years or so for the new procedure to come out in her area and finally the news come, the procedure was out and an appointment was set.

I remember how excited and hopeful my mom was that this was going to unblock her arteries, she knew as well as the rest of the family it met life or death, her heart was failing under the pressure of the blockages.

The new procedure was unsuccessful due to my mom's arties not only being very small but by this point the arties were almost 100% blocked, my mom‘s heart was not only under great pressure to work, but it was also now on borrowed time.

My mom's silent disappointment was not only deafening, but shattered my heart. I knew I had to work towards let her go and do all I could to help my mom as she traveled down this road of pain and disappointment on her final journey here on earth.

Time passed and mom had taking a really bad fall and shattered one of her hips due to being on to many drugs which were interacting with each other, that fall not only lead to her demise but was to reveal what my mom would ultimately end up dieing from.

My mom also had a disease called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which destroyed her lungs. We were told our mother not only needed a heart transplant but also a lung transplant, yet she was not a candidate for either due to her heart being so bad at this point.

My mom had her hip repaired the best it could be done and she did rehabilitation at a nursing home before going to stay with my younger sister and her family who lived in VT.

Not long after mom moved in with my sister she become very ill again, this time it was discovered my mom's colon was dead due to a bacteria no one even knew was there, this bacteria had spread rapidly eventually taking our mothers precious life.
