Obituary

Mary Houghton, daughter of Aaron and Eleanor (Sumner) Houghton, was born in Preston, Lancashire, England, in 1841. In 1844, at the age of about three, she with her parents and older brother Edward emigrated from England, settling in Beetown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin.

In the years following their arrival in Beetown Township, Mary and Edward would be joined by five more siblings: Alice (1845), William (1849), Margaret (1850), Eleanor (1851), and Bethany (1853).

Mary' father had purchased land and the entire family was involved in farming.

Mary never married but lived with her parents until their deaths (her father passed away in 1882, and her mother in 1893). After her mother's passing she made her home with her brother William and his family, also in Beetown Township.

Mary passed away at her brother's home on Sunday, March 31, 1918, having reached the age of 77 years. She was survived by:
...her brother William (Clara) Houghton and family; and
...two sisters
......Alice (John) Blackburn and family, and
......Margaret (William) Short and family.

She was preceded in death by
...her parents, Aaron (March 14, 1882) and Eleanor (April 27, 1893)
...her brother Edward (March 10, 1913) and
...two sisters
......Eleanor Houghton (October 14, 1853, at the age of only 2 Years, 6 Months, 9 Days) and
......Bethany (James) Iliff (June 7, 1912)

Mary's mortal remains were laid to rest next to her parents and little sister Eleanor in Dodge Cemetery.
