Houghton Surname Project by Charlie Vella:

I began my genealogical interest after reading Vivian Imogene Uran's 1954 Houghton Genealogy (my wife’s grandmother).

I then began entering every Houghton citation I have come across, beginning in 1994, in my Houghton computer database.

I used Sutro Library in San Francisco as my base, starting with their census data. I reviewed the NEGHR there for all Houghton citations. I made a xerox copy of their original 1912 Houghton Genealogy by JW Houghton, and used it to computerize his data. I entered the entirety of J.W. Houghton's 1912 Houghton Genealogy (no sources; many errors).

I reviewed all of the 1850 census data there between 1996 and 2002 at Sutro Library, San Francisco, CA, USA.

I then entered all the Houghton citations in the entire New England Historical and Genealogical Register (which sourced many of JWH’s data).

I created the Houghton Family Project, a website of much of my Houghton database in 1999.

I made copies of Marshall McClanahan's two Houghton Genealologies: Ralph Houghton and John Houghton and entered them into the Houghton database in 2001 (from National Archives, Colma, CA, USA).

Completed California Death Index 690 Houghtons in 2002.

I visited the St. Johnsbury Atheneum Library and reviewed their VT town histories and Hemenway's books in Aug 2002 at St. Johnsbury, Caledonia Co., VT, USA. Completed all of the town vital records, and the cemetery in Aug 2002 at Lyndon, Caledonia Co., VT, USA.

Took pictures of John Houghton's grave in Lancaster cemetery (both original tombstone and memorial). Saw John Prescott's gravestone on 10 Aug 2002 at Lancaster, Worcester Co., MA, USA.

Completed all post 1850 Lancaster MA vital records in their town records on 10 Aug 2002 at Lancaster, Worcester Co. MA, USA. Town Records: Vital Records, Lancaster, Worcester Co., MA. Hereinafter cited as Town Records.

In June 2004 I spent 2 weeks in Vermont and discovered the VT State Division of Records which has fairly complete surname based VRs; I did the Houghton surname microfilms (1760-1870-1908-1941-1954), taking 465 pages of handwritten notes.

I visited the Vermont Historical Society Library in Barre VT for an afternoon and reviewed their cemetery volumes.

In 2004 I began the Houghton DNA project and have had 54 contributors by 2014; in the process we have established that John and Ralph Houghton of Lancaster MA, and John Houghton of NJ were unrelated Houghton lines.

I have had, as of 2006, about 650 correspondents who have sent me Houghton data. I have tried to be meticulous in citing all my data sources.

In 2004 I began the Houghton DNA project and have had 11 contributors; in the process we have established that John and Ralph Houghton of Lancaster MA, and John Houghton of NJ were unrelated Houghton lines.

In 2002 I completed the 1850 census (on microfich) for all Houghton surname citations.

In 2011, I started reviewing all census research of Haughton surname in US Censuses.
In 2014 I completed 1790 to 1880 Haughton censuses; also completed 1885-1940 Indian censuses.
In 2014 completed 1851-1921 English and Canadian censuses.
On Jan 26, 2015 I completed the 1940 census.

My objective is obviously to complete the most definitive data source for the Houghton/Haughton surname of the United States. I initially wanted to start actually publishing a series of Houghton genealogies in 2012, the 100^th anniversary of JWH’s Houghton Genealogy, but the 1940 census was published that year.

A note about my methodology: In the early days of my research, I entered larger contributions by noting the contributor in the first citation for the original ancestor contributed, but not in the descendants. I did not always cite parent sources. As an example, in all of J.W. Houghton, unless other data sources (i.e. vital records) are cited, you should assume that parents are given in J.W. Houghton. If vital records are cited for birth of child, then parents given were cited in the vital records source.
